Create a New Nation.

Sid Meier's Colonization, a turn-based strategy in which you can become the conquistador of the New World, is available now for $5.99, only on GOG.com.

You probably missed the first ships in 1492 (unless you’re a Highlander), you might have played the the game in 1994 or 95 when the game was originally released (but you probably don’t have the floppy or an Amiga anymore), and now you’ve got your third and final chance to conquer the Americas: the digital version of Colonization, brought to you by GOG.com.

Sid Meier's Colonization is much more than just an improved version of strategy classic Civilization from 1991: instead of building your own civilization from scratch, you start as as a nation’s leader and begin colonizing the newly discovered world. Each of the European powers: England, France, Spain, or Netherlands has its own bonuses that make it unique, like Dutch trading, French negotiations, or Spanish military bonuses against the native villages. Depending on what you choose, you’ll be more of a colonist, trader, diplomat, or brutal conquistador. Ultimately, you’ll declare independence--but not without a fight!

Dealing with three European superpowers, eight native tribes, and finally the King's expeditionary force arriving to teach you a lesson, Colonization is a difficult task, especially since there are thousands of interactive elements that can change the outcome of each playthrough. The simple idea, mixed with creative genius of Sid Meier, and rules of a turn-based-strategy, make for a game that can be replayed forever.

Set sail, land, and claim Sid Meier's Colonization as your own for only $5.99 on GOG.com.
So this is the predecessor to Master of Magic, right?

gyokzoli: Is it the DOS version? I hope not...

Psyringe: The screenshots are definitely from the DOS version. Compare this Windows screenshot from Mobygames to screenshot #12 from the GOG version.

I don't know the exact differences between the versions though. But I don't think they ever changed the gameplay?
The DOS version is fixed at 320x200 but the Windows version has windows and can be as big as you want (just like Civilization 1 for Windows).

Erm, no. Totally different teams, totally different settings (age of discovery vs. epic fantasy). Both were published by Microprose, but that's where the similarity ends. Colonization was developed by Brian Reynolds (with input from Jeff Briggs and Sid Meier), who later went on to create Alpha Centauri. Master of Magic was developed by Simtex (Steve Barcia's team), who had previously created master of Orion, and then went on to create Master of Orion II.

Arrrrrgh. I KEEP making that darn mistake since the 90s, it's one of the things that my brain apparently just can't process. Thanks for putting it right, I'll correct my post.

You too?

"What the hell, guy?"
OMG OMG IT'S THE MOTHER OF ALL INSTABUYS !!!

Yeah, I'll breathe and clam down now.

Of course, I have FreeCol. Of course, I have the "Civ IV edition" of Colonization. I even started a new game on that one a couple of days ago.

But it just doesn't feel the same than the original game, on which I've spent so much time I'd better not try to start counting...

I've also spent so much time to try to configure Dosbox to play it, only to fail miserably (i'm a noob at dosbox)...

So, yeah, another happy GOGer here ! ^_^
<Colonization Newb

I've played for a little bit just now, and boy am I in for a learning curve here. That's okay though. I already knew that Colonization is the most complex in Sid Meier's/Brian Reynolds's series of games, but it might be good for me to run through the basics of the manual. Right-click tips is always a good thing to have. There's certainly enough resources and unit roles that they are needed.

Anyway, I really enjoy the music in this game despite its midi origin. Frankly, I can't even think of a single Civ-type game of which I liked its in-game music (the little there was), so this is a first.

I'm very much looking forward into delving some more into it, after finishing the Blackwell games. I don't want to get too distracted right now. In any case, thank you so much, GOG, for bringing us this classic of classics. I'm willing to bet that the rights for this one weren't all that easy to get, even if it only says "Atari" on that game card.

svmariscal: Maybe they just put those names there to drive us insane.

Thiev: Now why would I do that...

<.<
>.>

Okay, I admit I didn't want to go with default towns and I just took names from the top wishlisted games.
So let me say that before things get out of hand (I know you guys too well :P) - the screens contain no release hints whatsoever.
Well, GOG never condones piracy...

Always glad to see the words "sid" and "meier's" in the same page here on GOG.

GREAT GAME! :-D

Edit: Oh great, here's an instabuy and both my credit cards were declined at this time. I need to wait until my next cred card bill is paid. SHIT! And because of what? SIX FRICKING BUCKS!

That sucks. I don't think you'll have to wait that long though. Check your PM box. ;)
Here's hoping that Sid Meire's Civil War games (Gettysburg and Antietam) come to GOG soon as well as the first 3 Civilzation games.....
So many great games that eat up my time! I think I'm entering a singularity.
