Better than a barrel of rum!

Pirates! Gold Plus, a pack that includes Pirates! Gold and Sid Meier’s Pirates, the finest pirate simulation and its acclaimed Windows remake, is available in one big booty chest on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Sid Meier's Pirates! is one of the most memorable treasures in the history of PC games and nautical sims. The game might be 25 years old, but the unbeatable concept behind it hasn’t aged one bit. After all, swashbuckling and roaming the seas in search for adventure never gets old. The game offers a complex world full of gold to grab, ships to sail, ports to pillage, and rivals to ravage with a well placed cannon volley. Or if piracy and treasure hunting are not your thing, you can always turn to trading goods or even get married and settle down. The free roam gameplay is as unpredictable and varied as a sea rover’s life can get.

Both Sid Meier's Pirates! and its revamped Windows version Pirates! Gold take us to the Golden Age of Buccaneering. They let you experience the life of a pirate, privateer, or a pirate hunter in the Spanish Main. The tremendous depth of simulation in these games creates a nearly perfect image of the 16th, 17th, and 18th century Caribbean -- with all of its political, economic, and nautical realities -- and sea-salty flavor. With this game Sid Meier (a promising game designer at the time) earned the status of a legend in the industry. And there was a good reason for that!

Set sail for the ruthless seas! Grab Pirates! Gold Plus--TWO GAMES for $5.99 before scurvy gets the better of ye!
Pirates! is one of my favorite games of all times -- I've sank many a ship in my years.

I do have to say, though, the 2004 remake is the way a remake should be done: true to the originally, all fixing and enhancing. I can't complain too much about a favorite coming to GOG.com, but I do feel that the 2004 remake would be a better choice -- it's more of the same, only better.

dirtyharry50: Agreed.

fortune_p_dawg: While I love some of the newer indie releases, I can't help but agree.

I hope the pool of old games isn't drying up....
That said, Pirates is an awesome release!
Again an agreement here, Although most of us will play new games (we are gamers after all) I dont find it surprizing at all that people called for classic games. Lets face it, thats how a good number of us found this little slice of nostalgia, I for 1 dont mind the newer releases but I think that GOG has to keep bringing the older games back if possible and maybe a few less indy and a few more modern mainstream games. I know the indy scene is popular but the market is getting flooded with them.
Strange... we have the gamecard page, but it doesn't show up in the catalog or by searching for it...
Never played this one, but looks very nice. Wishlisted

Edit: hope to see someday in GOG Transport Tycoon Deluxe

DukeNukemForever: The original is from a time before Pirates became funny.

MasodikTiasma: Mmmh, when I posted this I should have added: !WARNING! IRONY MODE ON!
Ahh, I understand ;-) Don't joke around with an old pirate, arrrgh. And yes, loom is a great game...

adamzs: I would be happier if it were the main focus, but the GOG guys have decided that they would shift the focus to have their catalog cover more mainstream/popular games. And I can't really blame them - in commerce mainstream equals more money and faster business growth, while the niche market can only get you so far.
Old games aren't that niche though, not compared to say some of the more obscure simulators (farming, digging etc)... GOG made great profits just selling old games. At least they have some exclusivity in the niche market and aren't releasing the same overpriced cack every other digital distributor has.

Old games should ALWAYS be their number 1 focus... I mean there's a huge quantity to get out and they'll never catch up so they'll always have more oldies to release. All this newer stuff is slowing down old releases irregardless of what people say because all those slots could be filled by old games instead.
What confuses me is that according to Wikipedia, the 1993 remake Pirates! Gold was a Windows 3.1 game. So is this game also running in DOSBox, or is it an actual Windows .exe?
I wish people would just move on with their petty complaints about gog releasing non-old games... It's really becoming tiresome... and lame, particularly given that the phrase "good old games" is entirely subjective.
I played this on Amiga back in the day. DOS version looks (and probably sounds) pretty horrible in comparison. Wishlisted for now.
Great release! I hope this old classic release is a promise of loads of newer games too!

I wish the 2005 remake comes here too, even if "everyone has it already from Steam" blaa blaa blaa...

It came both for DOS and Win 3.1, as far as I remember. So, this is most probably the DOS version running in DOSBox..

EDIT: Yes it was for both DOS and Win3.1.

This was my favourite Amiga game! Though I fear it has aged badly.
Good release.
Ahoy matey! Many a wasted hour I spent in my youth chasing down booty... and I played Pirates! alot too! : )

In all seriousness, great to see this game available! Pirates! was always one of my favorite games to play as a teenager.

but the news entry clearly refers to the Windows version of the Gold edition.

i have the Windows version here but cannot get it to run on W7x64. i assume it's a 16-bit application.

anybody actually bought the game here and can enlighten us?
Before Pirates of the Caribbean and the Monkey Island series, There is this excellent gem.
