koima57: ...main music on the island really got on my nerves...
avatar
MadalinStroe: There seem to be multiple people that agree on this, I hope that's not the case for me, because I can't wait to get home and play the game.

koima57: ...while the English intro song is outright bad...
avatar
MadalinStroe: Considering even the animation style of the intro, matches those cheesy 90s , Saturday morning cartoons, I think it was done on purpose. I've seen the intro on youtube twice, and it didn't bother me, but who knows if it won't start grinding on my nerves after a while. Though why the hell I'd watch the intro more than a couple of times...

Solei: Instabought.

I loved the Wonderboy 3 remake and I'm so gonna enjoy this ;^)

MadalinStroe: Another kindred soul. :)
Hmm it was not the animation or the content of the (English) intro but again the musical tone and score that is awful to me, overly childish singing and lyrics, just annoying.

I am a little puzzled as it seem the soundtrack is getting ton of praise from press outlets with many big Japanese stars at the helm but apparently not so from several players, including me from the demo piece at least.

A big part of the demo was exploring underwater and the music would loop back at screen change to the island theme every few minutes, making it aggravating.

"Soundtrack from iconic Japanese composers: Yuzo Koshiro, Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru Yamane, Keiki Kobayashi and Takeshi Yanagawa."

Edit : The Japanese opening has good enough anime song with a woman singing.

Noice! It's also cheaper than the console versions. Double noice! I've been looking forward to this. It even runs decently on my aging gaming lappie (I tried the Steam demo). :)

SirPrimalform: No, I'm not getting it confused with the remake. I could have sworn *this* game was already out.
The game has been out on PS4 and Switch for a while now. I beat the Switch version back in December.

I think a lot of the problem is that the early tracks are based around the older Dragon's Trap, which had very simplistic compositions itself for the Sega Master System. I think the remake of Dragon's Trap (also on here) handled a lot of those songs better than this game does. This game starts to get more into its own in the music front later on when it starts relying more on original compositions, but the early game music isn't my favorite, I'll agree (or even favorite versions of the songs features from DT).

Songs I liked:

Likewise, comparisons of the beach song:

OK, this game looks extremely interesting and right up my alley, but I have a question about a make-it-or-break-it mechanic, so I'd appreciate it if someone who had played this game before could answer me: how tight is the platforming?

I'm asking this because I bought the Wonder Boy remake that's also sold here on GOG, a game that got huge praise by the Master System Wonder Boy fans, and I absolutely hated that game... the art style is kind of nice, I guess, but the platforming felt too... loose, floaty and slippery, a complaint I have and most hardcore Wonder Boy fans didn't, because apparently the original title(s) already played like that. Now, I have NO nostalgia for these games whatsoever, I never owned a single SEGA console, so, I'm not going to praise a gameplay mechanic that's badly implemented just because I "had to deal with it" way back when.

It would seem a different studio worked on the two games, though, Wonder Boy remake was made by Lizardcube and Monster Boy is developed by Game Atelier, so I'm hoping this one controls better, especially since it's not a remake and doesn't need to implement the crappy delayed control Wonder Boy fans expect from the game. I've also been seeing a lot of comparisons to the Shantae games, a series I downright love, so if it controls more like Shantae than Wonder Boy, I'm sold.

Also, how well does it play on keyboard? And can we rebind key mappings?

Thanks in advance for any replies I might get (and, if it's not too much trouble, do try using the "Quote/Reply" option, as I don't really keep up with forum activity, and at least I'll get a notification, that way).

Happy gaming, everyone!
@saldite thank you for your infos, really thorough! I would not know, shame i have all the games and not played them yet... Even Dragon's Trap PC Engine version on my Wii Virtual Console.

I prefere the remake music of the beach theme indeed... Thanks, hopefully only the start is a little mild in this new one.

@groze You could try the demo it is on Steam or the Playstation shop and alike if you have the console(s). I did not find issue with the platforming from my trial, i get what you mean about the character floaty movement of inertia with DT, i think to recall it wasn't in this new game.

That might be it! I played the demo on the Switch a while back so I might be mixing up the fact it's been out a while on the Switch in conjunction with it being announced (but not released) here.
That was interesting! Not having played any of the originals I didn't know the Beach music was an arrangement of an old tune. For what it's worth, I actually like the Monster Boy version the best. It has a nice shuffle that the others lack (although the Dragons Trap remake version is nice too for sure).

Of course it's cheaper, I see no point in making pc players virtually pay more for the same product. :P
wonderboy 3 anime edition?
This looks good, too bad there is no linux version.
Having watched some speedruns of this game, here are some of my impressions:
* There is, unfortunately, an insta-fail stealth section; however, you can at least see the sight cones of the guards, and it looks like it's designed in a way that you won't lose much progress. (I put this point first for a reason.)
* There are many race situations, where you will fail if you are not fast enough. Interestingly, there is one specific music track that is used for basically every scene of this sort.
* Unfortunately, you can only play as a male character, it appears. However, you spend most of the game in animal forms, much like in The Dragon's Trap (and unlike the rest of the series). Interestingly enough, you can easily switch forms at any time (though not back to human form once you're forced out of it after the beginning).
* You find power-ups for your various forms. Oddly, once you're past the intro, it will be a while before you can equip weapons or armor.
* Bosses are somewhat of a puzzle, where figuring out what you need to do to hurt the boss can be tricky. Sometimes, you might think you have it figured out, but then the game throws you a curveball later in the fight.
* The music is a mixed bag. Some of the music is good (the music for the area with ghosts, which by the way features a very interesting mechanic), while other music is trash (the volcano music and the final dungeon music). It seems like most of the music comes from other Monster World/Wonder Boy games, but remixed. (The remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap has better music.)
Monster Boy is discounted and I very much recommend this. PSA: everything dtgreene has said is true, but it's enjoyable game despite that or maybe because of that.
