High fantasy and modern-day technology in RPG-RTS fusion.

Heroes of Annihilated Empires, a fantasy RTS with RPG elements from the makers of Cossacks and American Conquest, is available now on GOG.com for $9.99.

Heroes of Annihilated Empires is a magic-themed strategy game with four playable races: the Elves (Sylvan Folk), the Mechanicians (technologically advanced dwarves), the Cryo Race (barbarians with a specialty in cold magic), and the Undead (Zombies, Skeletons, Werewolves, and other cuddly creatures). Story centers around Elhant, an Elven Ranger, and his attempts to save his world from destruction by the undead Legions of Ashes. The game’s dark fantasy storyline, created by Ukrainian novelist Ilya Novak and told with graphic novel-inspired cutscenes and voiceovers, is one of the strongest points of the game.

Those familiar with previous strategie games by GSC already know how players can collect insanely huge numbers of units, and how great the battles of thousands look. In the RTS part of Heroes of Annihilated Empires, you build, gather, train, and finally defeat your opponents. In RPG ‘mode’, the player’s hero (Warrior, Ranger, or a Mage) is the leader of an army, and charges into battle to fight evil one on one, wearing loot collected from past battles, casting spells, gaining experience, and becoming more powerful in your quest to win.

Whether you’re into action RPGs or massive RTS battles, Heroes of Annihilated Empires is an original and interesting take on fantasy strategy, available now on GOG.com for $9.99.
I remember quite liking the intro video, then some not so great gameplay. I think I'll pass this one.
Wow an average of at least 4.5 stars by the users here. The game must be super awesome because that never happens at gog.

( yes that was sarcasm)
To my knowledge GSC gameworld is now officially closed down. Of those who remained went to form a new company that is working on a game called survinarium. It's too bad though since in terms of gameplay and atmosphere I consider the Stalker games to be superior to Fallout 3 .And the biggest fallout of this closure is the cancellation of Stalker 2 - surprisingly this bit of news did not even create a ripple in the gaming industry.

People have different tastes, and only ever rate their favourite games. It kind-of messes up review scores.

While that's a valid reason and plays a big part in the average scores, what infuriates me is the tendency people have to rate either with the min or the max score available. This goes as well for movies (eg imdb) and messes up with the average even more.
In the end you see a 5 (10/whatever) star game/movie/album and the best you can go is "meh".

You said it, brother. User reviews come in three flavours: 100% (I like it), 0% (I have this one complaint I'd like to draw attention to), and -- (love it or hate it, but not enough to motivate me to rate it). Critic reviews, on the other hand, operate on the continuous scale from 60% (terrible) to 95% (perfect).

I recall reading not-so-great opinions about this game, but I guess it could have been underrated.
Anyway, I like strategy games, so I'll probably check this out some time later.
GOG release have been really disappointing the last few weeks.

Disappointing ?

Blackwell Bundle
Tomb raider bundle...

We don't share the same taste, clearly...

Maybe for you, but for me, with Colonization, Pharaoh and (a bit earlier) Zeus, they weren't anywhere near disappointing ;-).
But, of course, it's all subjective.
EDIT
The post of N0x0ss further confirms just how subjective it is.

I don't advicate piracy against gog but I am against the developers of this game!, I purchased this some time ago on steam but would not work at all with pcie graphics cards. Because it looks for AGP memory or something, causes corruption. Steam would not give me a refund, I told the developers of the issue and they basically said screw you we can't help.

Why should I buy the game why not just pirate it just for the exe?, i'd rather give gog some of the cost and nothing to the developer

JudasIscariot: No, it's just that we aren't one with the GOG wishlist yet. Have no fear, I heard we are getting some new equipment and I believe I heard the word "augmentation" being used soooo :P
Wow! I didn't realize you were part of the GOG.com crew. Seems like quite a few of the community old guard are with GOG.com. Where's the sign-up form? :P

On topic though, cool release! I played a copy on WinXP a while back but didn't have a lot of luck getting a copy running on Win7 in the time I was willing to spend on it. I'll definitely have to retire my copy in favor of the GOG.com version. Until then, wishlisted!
Enjoy a seamless combination of RTS and RPG gameplay with a possibility to combine or choose between one and the other.

Leroux: Does that mean you can play it as a RPG without worrying about the RTS aspects?
Never played it, but seems like it's primarily an RTS and only then it has some RPG elements (probably levels and a fantasy setting).

I was interested by the trailer and looks of screenshots. Just watched some gameplay videos and found them rather repetitive. De-wishlisted it for now.

Superior to Fallout eh? What's this Stalker game everyone's talking about?

You must check out stalker:SOC with the stalker complete mod which weaves in the key elements beautifully and helps augment the atmosphere further.Stalker:SOC is perhaps GSc gameworlds finest work till date and I would absolutely love to see it on GOG. The game is first person RPS and not a FRPG which fallout 3 is. Having played the first 2 fallout games , 3 was somewhat disappointing even though tgraphically it was very beautiful - when I think of post apocalyptic survivalistic experience I think stalker does it much better than fallout 3 and the gameplay is also less cumbersome.

Bear in mind that I am only comparing it to fallout 3 and not the original fallout or it's stellar sequel which in my opinion are the finest rpgs out there. Since I have yet to finish new vegas -it's too early to draw a comparison there. And yes Stalker:SOC is much more engaging and has much better than pacing fallout 3 - even vanilla. The latter two stalker games however aren't as good as SOC in my opinion but they are still great.
