Is the gameplay similar to Sublevel Zero?

So, I played EVERSPACE back when it first came to GOG and I stopped for one reason only – holding out for 1.0. So I'm excited for this release!

The build back then was fairly barebones, with only one ship and none of the story elements. But what was there – the core gameplay loop – was superbly fun. The flying is smooth, responsive, and pleasant, making something as basic as movement simply a joy.
There is also an element of risk and survival to it all. The roguelite elements complement the intensity of each fight, they force you to pick your battles, and then follow you for every battered, broken cruise towards fleeting safety. Going roguelite isn't always the right choice, but I think EVERSPACE is all the better for it.

Gameplay wise, to me the keywords are: fun, intense, arcadey.

Sounds interesting! Does it have multiple star systems or just one?

Arcadey confirmed, those of you who enjoy that, rejoice :-)

So, there are large contained areas that you jump between. Kind of like in FTL. I don't remember how the game frames this in the context of SPAAAACE. Could be planets, could be star systems.

You explore, clear each one, and move on when you're ready. Each area is very visually distinct, which you can tell even from the screenshots.

Looks interesting, or is this game a boring grind like Elite Dangerous?
Looks cool. Wishlisted for now. Waiting to see what happens with Linux version.

Usually it's AMD video drivers that cause problems. Strange to hear that this time it's NVIDIA the cause of the delay.
This looks like it could be fun, but $30 is a lot for me to drop on a roguelike game. Very rarely, they end up being like Nuclear Throne where I love it and put a ton of time into it. Unfortunately, it's far more common for me to get bored after a few hours at most. Not saying that this game isn't worth the asking price, but for me it's too much of a gamble to find out.

Isn't there a time limit? When browsing discussions of the game, I saw someone complaining about a time limit.

I can state from the time that I put into the game that it IS good; in fact, I enjoyed this game more than Rebel Galaxy and X3 due to the controls. The dialogue seemed geneic and the difficulty beyond the third jump caused me to take a break from the game, but I stuck with this game more than the others and had intended to play it again once it reached "1.0".

I just came in from running errands and launched Galaxy to find that the 5.0+ GB file started downloading, so I'll have something more concrete to say about the revised gameplay sometime tomorrow. I just hope that there's more derelicts to explore between jumps, slightly easier difficulty (don't make it too easy though!) and a little more time before the GigaArmada warps in.

The VISUALS and the controls, though! For once, an indie game that takes my overpriced machine's graphics hardware and processing power and visually makes it worth the purchase.

On the last build there WAS a time limit built in (can't remember how long), before nigh-invincible enemies appeared and wiped the floor with you before you could escape. Don't know if that's been lengthened or lessened as I haven't read the changelog yet (but I'm going to check it out).

I agree with you about $30 game purchases; a game has to be at the level of XCOM: EU or a mainstream Borderlands game for me to spend that much. Games like Nuclear Throne, Dungeon Souls, Ziggurat, and Sublevel Zero have given me a lot more bang for my buck as rougelikes. Still, I did take a gamble on Everspace and found it to be an accessible, addictive game with decent controls, above-average visuals and good gameplay.

Tempted.
Saw the final update come through and the In Dev tag removed last night. I suck at this game, but it's one of my favorite rogue-lites.

Congrats Rockfish Games. The journey was fun!

Back into the fray to get promptly blown to pieces...

tarasis: "Joystick / HOTAS Support

As we have said many times, EVERSPACE was specifically designed for mouse and keyboard. It is the recommended way to play because the game is an arcade space shooter, not a simulation. Just like in First Person Shooters, you will be strafing a lot and will greatly benefit from the aiming precision using a mouse provides.
This probably means I'll be picking this one up - I love the idea of the gameplay loop and I'm a huge sucker for space shooters. Knowing I have the option to break out my flightstick, but that the game might be better off with the Mouse and Keyboard is probably all the assurance I need that I'll enjoy the game.

I'll certainly revisit come June-ish but thanks for the re-post. Seriously, you just took a game I wanted to like but was feeling a bit lukewarm about to me being as excited as I should be for something right in my genre wheelhouse.
I've done about 7 runs and i'm glad I splashed on it. I was worried about my modest laptop specs which only just meet the reccs, but my rig runs more choppy than its specs. Still, on low-med settings this still game looks and plays fantastic.
Combat is very fast paced and intense; I was flat out butchered in my first few fights before I settled on a DS4 pad, tweaked the limited control options for half an hour, and forced myself to adjust to the game's demands. Going to remap the controls further though 'cuz switching weapons, consumables and powerups with the d-pad in the middle of combat is untenable.

It's very fun so far, but i've only scratched the surface. I felt like I had a decent amount of time to look for resources, ogle the scenery and have a few dogfights before I had to jump. After a certain point though, a force with a large ship will indeed jump in and shred you in moments, so it's a decently balanced tension.

The FTL-like node jumping meta map seems pointless to me in the early game though. There's no choices or considerations to take into account: there are few branches, few nodes, and no info on anything. No larger context either. I wasted a lot of hard earned credits upgrading the map info perk because it permanently says on the UI "Next upgrade: Reveal threat level info on nodes" or similar... well, no such info has yet to reveal itself after 4 upgrades. Pah.

this is my #1 wanted game

looks pretty awesome, and now I am looking forward to hearing about it more to confirm if it holds that #1 spot rightfully or not
