A true indie classic!

DROD 1+2+3, a classic indie (that's a thing!) puzzle/adventure/RPG trilogy with gameplay full of mind-boggling challenges, and a unforgettable male lead, is available on GOG.com, for only $9.99.

There's a notion that indie game development is a recent trend. Created by Erik Hermansen in 1997 DROD--or Deadly Rooms of Death--is a great example that it isn't so. Following mostly the adventures of Beethro, a hero who is mostly remembered for his extremely unlucky charisma rolls, the games combine clever puzzle game mechanics with top-down dungeon crawling. What this series lacks in visual department it more than makes up for in its huge amount of complex and challenging levels. DROD 1+2+3 contains King Dugan's Dungeon, Journey to Rooted Hold, The City Beneath--the three classic campaigns that will take you hours, and hours to solve.

Put on your thinking cap, prepare for some peculiar humor, and experience all that DROD 1+2+3 has to offer, for only $9.99 on GOG.com. That's only $3.33 per an amazing indie classic!
Classic Indies?

now you're just showin' off.

zeffyr: Hm, It looks a little bit like CULT games (does any1 remember them?). Is the gameplay similiar to them?

Screens from Cult:

I thought exactly the same thing. What a blast from the past!

Nice to hear that they're not forgotten :> Although I've completed them 8 years ago (approx.), I remember them quite well - classic 'indie' games :)

Thanks for mentioning these, guys. I went and got them (free!) and just finished the first one. Very nice.
And to answer the question: The gameplay of DROD has no similarities to Cult. If I remember correctly Cult was more or less a pure action game, while DROD is completely a turn-based puzzle game. Can't be further away from each other.

Not really, I recall Cult as mix of action, adventure and logic game. Somebody please correct me, if I'm wrong :>
I think these are very rare, good work GoG!

Well, since I've played these today, I guess my memory is the freshest, lol. To me they are more of a light puzzle adventure type games. Unless "action" implies walking around and talking to folks. Well, I haven't finished the second one yet, so maybe things'll change.
How did I skipped this? Looks awesome!
Amazing that it's been released here. Looking forward to DROD 4 (5?) and RPG releases down the line.

If anyone has already finished the main games and is pining for more, there's tonnes of user-generated content (some on par with the main game) available on the developers site:

It's weird that the fact that there are additional levels isn't mentioned anywhere on GOG.

I must have played these in the early 2000s. I remember getting them from a PC magazine disk. Freeware games like Cult and Dink Smallwood were my bread and butter. :)

my personal Friend Jon Sonnenberg (his musical project is Travelogue) made the soundtracks for DROD 3, 4, and 5.
If you found the music interesting at all, he will be releasing them through Bandcamp and iTunes soon.
