Isometric dungeon crawl centred on the important elements: hacking, slashing, and addictively stealing time.

Darkstone is an isometric hack ‘n’ slash game that would be familiar to anyone who’s a fan of devilish dungeon crawls, but it is definitely a lot more than a simple knock off; it’s a click-hungry time killer that’s a great coffee-break game, and it’s available on GOG.com right now for $5.99.

Darkstone allows you to select a hero--or heroes, because you’re allowed to control a party of two--from well-known classes (Warrior-brute force, Monk-healing, Assassin-stealth, and Wizard-offensive spells, with female equivalents of each: Amazon, Priestess, Sorceress, and Thief) and use 32 different spells, 22 skills, 22 types of weapons, to explore 37 different levels. That is a lot of variety, but when you add that the game creates an entirely random map and adventure for each new game, complete with new missions, new items, and new dungeon placement in castles, dungeons, plague-ridden cities, and forests, you have to admit that it’s a lot of a lot of variety.

Darkstone sports a few features that makes it the most easy-to-play game released on GOG.com today: everything can be controlled thrpough a mouse-click; the game features a fully adjustable camera that's actually really easy to control (for your favorite peeking around dark dungeon corridors); all it takes to kill a monster is to click on it (and a blade and some armor and some exp, obviously). Fully-3D graphics, a well done sound track, great combat sounds and animations (that matters more than you’d think in a hack-and-slash!) only prove that Darkstone developers knew well how to make an excellent action-RPG.

Overall, Darkstone for $5.99 is a steal. Did we mention it has multiplayer? No? Darkstone features great multiplayer. And yes, you should try it with a friend in co-op!
DARKTOOOOONE!!!

Remember playing the demo to death when I was a kid (before I got a copy of Diablo). Excellent game. Now, I have the Playstation port which is a pretty good game as well (controls much better than I'd hoped). Can't wait for a good occasion to buy it.

And of course, who can forget that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R8YZQ8HAwI (and yes, it's from the game).
I tried it long time ago and it was a bit boring. I loved that it has outdoor environment but i can't remember any good story and it just didn't felt that good.
Very nice, thank you GOG! :D

Merchito: Yes! YES! YES! YES!
No no no no....

cause i will buy it the second i get a proper pc (sitting on a netbook atm) and i have way too many games.
Happy to see this one show up on GOG. Always liked Darkstone and the disc copy I have is a real pain to get working on modern operating systems.
This game is really fun, and, most importantly, past the "fugly 3d" stage.

I remember in being not very balanced though, in that there's a "right" way to build the party that becomes apparent towards the end, but the game doe not steer you to it. It's just "sorry, but after this point, your tactics suck, and since you are not built to do anything else, enjoy save-scumming or start over."

However, I also remember it being so replayable and addictive that it took broadband and MMORPGs to make my then-friend quit it.
This is just me, but I hated those graphics. Really bad time for video games.
I hadn't heard of this one before today. Seems interesting enough. I'll wishlist it right now and then finalize it when I cut back on Skyrim.

I remember having fun with this back in the day.
ooooooohhh what a nice surprise. I actually preferred this over diablo 1. I did like diablo 2 better, but it still had some neat features over D2 regardless... like the ability to click on the map and travel all the way to that point without having to control the character ;)

Make sure you tip the bard in town... very cool easter egg there.

I'll rebuy the GoG version on a sale.

GOG! There is a video on the CD... I can provide if needed, that should be included on the extras. Not sure if there is a rights issue with this, but it came with the game. (music video of the in-game easter egg).

haha.
im quite the opposite. I am very fond of 1998-2003 3d graphics. There is just something in them... they do not suffer from shitty resolution but at the same time are quite simple... and to the point; an axe looks like an axe but lacks any flare and fanfare such an axe would have in 2012 game. really like that.
not in every game of course (cough.... deus ex)...
I've only played the Playstation version, it didn't appeal to me though which is odd considering I normally like rpgs, and also the navigation system drove me crazy. I wouldn't say this is a bad game, but it just didn't catch my interest. I may buy this again to see if the PC version is better, when it goes on sale.

The game is worth getting though, if at least to listen to a certain song. I've ripped the song from my psX disk and saved to my computer ;)
Another new publisher on Board? great to hear

Wishlisted for now
Cool looking game, although I'll be keeping an eye out for the PSX version to add to my collection. Maybe I'll pick up the GOG release too depending on funds.
Looks like a great game. I really like old 3d graphics looking like this.

I can't stand Might and Magic VIII graphics for example, because this game is freaking ugly. Not because of the technology, but because of the artistic design.

Artistic design is much more important than engine. This is why I still love Neverwinter Nights or Dungeon siege, but truly hate Might and magic VII and VIII

Darkstone on the other hand, looks awesome for me.
