The third generation of the insanely extensive RPG is here.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit, a vastly enhanced modern remake of one of the biggest and longest-running hard-core isometric RPG worlds that came to being with Exile in 1995, is available 50% off until Monday, for Windows and Mac on GOG.com.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit tells an epic story of a huge underground prison colony - place of exile for empire's banished citizens, outcasts, criminals, and bastards, that becomes a thriving kingdom of its own over the course of hundreds of years of existence. For a computer game, it's quite impossible to recreate what pen & paper role playing games offer: endless adventures in a land of possibilities limited only by one's imagination. That's why most computer RPGs don't even try to reach that goal. Jeff Vogel's Avernum: Escape From The Pit defies that rule, and is one of the few games in the genre that come close to the analog predecessors in terms of complexity, depth, and scale.

If you're up for the challenge of a insanely vast feature-packed world that can takes months to explore in full, dare to descend into Avernum: Escape From The Pit. The 50% off release discount lasts until Monday, January 12, at 10:59AM GMT.
Already got this from a bundle. I think. Will have to see if I like it though before buying it here again.

yes it's newer, as Grargar pointed out this is a remake of Avernum 1 which itself was a remake of Exile: Escape from the pit. It uses the same engine Jeff used for Avadon: The Black fortress and it's sequel Avadon 2 as well as some of the desgin changes he made in Avadon, such as using skill trees and all that. Oh and they added a tutorial opening area in this version which has a bit of story to it(some guy locks the passage to the fort so they can't find and bring in the new arrivals and so he can recurit the most vicious of the prisioners to help him make a army while killing the rest) as opposed to the orginal Avernum 1 which just started you out in the fort area
I was curious about how this differs from the 2000 era Avernum 1 and found the following information on the developer's website.

"Avernum: Escape From the Pit is a ground-up rewrite of our popular game Avernum…

[New material includes] A new, large town with a pile of quests. New hidden dungeons. New hidden characters with lots of backstory and things you can do for them. A completely new starter dungeon/tutorial.

…The game system has been heavily revised… still entirely skill-based and most of the skills are the same. However, the way you train has changed. Instead of saving up skill points, each level you get to increase two skills. You will make the same number of choices to shape your character, but you will be making more of them later in the game and fewer of them earlier. We are also taking pains to make it much more difficult to create a party that is too weak to progress through the game. The Traits system has been massively reworked. Instead of picking two traits at the beginning of the game, you can select one new beneficial trait every two levels. A lot of these traits give simple bonuses, while others (like Backstab and Swordmage) can dramatically change the way you play the game…

The interface is completely redone… The character portraits are receiving a desperately overdue refurbishing. Many terrain icons from Avernum 6 are being used, but all creature and character graphics are being re-rendered."

So GOG any reason why part of the game's ending is in the screenshots on the games store page?

If that's true it's pretty hilarious. xD

It's what we received from Jeff :) But if you link me the exact screenshot, I'll be more than happy to remove it as I would hate to have the game's ending spoiled by its own advertising :)
Yay, Avernum! :D

Great to see it added to the catalog.

no need to apologize for the removal, I had a long tedius week at work which isn't close to be done yet and of course it also dosn't help that when I got home yesterday around 1 or 2 in the morning I stayed up for a extra four hours watching New Japan's Wrestle kingdom 9 PPV(amazing show and didn't feel like a four hour show either, it was also the first to have a optional english commentary done by the legendary Jim Ross doing play by play and with Matt Striker doing the colour commentary) so I was a wee bit out of it and didn't think till after posting that I should of just PM'd you the link to the screenshot instead of posting it here for anybody and everyone to see.

Ah well what's done is done. Anyway the only think I can think off why Jeff would send that was either he forgot what that screenshot was used for in the game or he mistook it for a similar looking one he uses in the introduction/back story part of the game

Will Jeff remake all the old Avernum games to this form?

So, this it the first one, the second (Crystal Souls) is in work, so can we hope, that he will remake all the other games in the following years?
well this game is on the shelf :D like i told earlier in this topic

i also just bought neo scavenger... it was on my wishlist, and 11.89 is a nice price for DRm free,
