The third generation of the insanely extensive RPG is here.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit, a vastly enhanced modern remake of one of the biggest and longest-running hard-core isometric RPG worlds that came to being with Exile in 1995, is available 50% off until Monday, for Windows and Mac on GOG.com.

Avernum: Escape From The Pit tells an epic story of a huge underground prison colony - place of exile for empire's banished citizens, outcasts, criminals, and bastards, that becomes a thriving kingdom of its own over the course of hundreds of years of existence. For a computer game, it's quite impossible to recreate what pen & paper role playing games offer: endless adventures in a land of possibilities limited only by one's imagination. That's why most computer RPGs don't even try to reach that goal. Jeff Vogel's Avernum: Escape From The Pit defies that rule, and is one of the few games in the genre that come close to the analog predecessors in terms of complexity, depth, and scale.

If you're up for the challenge of a insanely vast feature-packed world that can takes months to explore in full, dare to descend into Avernum: Escape From The Pit. The 50% off release discount lasts until Monday, January 12, at 10:59AM GMT.

Nice Release but i already have the game on Steam so i'll pass. :D
Finally this is released here, thanks!
I bought the game on a different site quite a while ago when it didn't seem like a release would come here any time soon if at all. When I just saw the news I instantly bought it again for my GOG-Library and got my hopes up that the GOG-team and Spiderweb will push Avernum 2 - Crystal Souls to here right on release day :)

Forget it, I'm derailing. Let the Avernum celebration commence! :D

*grin* Well, judging by the accompanying text, apparently he's getting a Scarlet Letter of Disapproval ("Emperor Hawthorne").

vicklemos: sorry for being nosey, but can you clarify this installer issues? just downloaded some tux games and they ran fine yesterday
avatar
Daliz: Linux games are fine - this is about Windows-only titles.

See:

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/on_gnulinux_has_anyone_be_able_to_extract_the_rar_innosetup_installers

http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/dont_slip_into_drm_swamp_stop_using_password_protection_on_installer_packages
Hmm that has peaked my curiosity I'll have to go read those forum threads now. Must admit I've not tried to unpack the new installers manually (no linux installed currently and no time to play).
Yay! They changed their mind! Now Nethergate please.

opeter1: Can someone tell me, how long this game is (I mean playtime in hours?). Thank you!
Depending on the way you play your games, this can take from 15 to 60 (or maybe longer if you take your time) hours to complete. ;-)

Great release! The game is highly recommended to any classic cRPG fan. And the artwork (as you see in some screenshots) is wonderful! Make sure to bring your own soundtrack though, because apart from some music here & there, there isn't any playing on the background all the time, like in other games.. but this is not a deal breaker by any means, the ambient sounds are quite atmospheric! ;-)
I love the Spiderweb games. Sometimes I even play them. 8)

I think I may actually own all of them, in various places. I know I've got doubles of several, including the latter three Avernum games on Steam (AND I have the complete saga here on GOG, AND I have Escape from the Pit on Steam).

So, the correct way to play the Saga at this point is Escape from the Pit, and then on to Avernum 2? I'm playing an extended round of Nethergate Resurrection, so I imagine the tech shift won't be anything I can't handle.

The remake of Avernum2 called "Crystal Souls" will be out very soon so you may want to wait for it. Probably be $20.00 for a while at least though.

trusteft: So, in theory, if I have the Avernum Saga from GOG, at least the main story from from the first part of that, will be the same as with the story in Escape from the pit? Will the game world be the same size etc too?

Basically, I have the Saga but I haven't played it yet. if I get this new release it will be just like playing through the first episode from the Saga, only with updated graphics, gui, etc?
Here's Let's Play's for three versions of the game for comparison.

Let's Play Exile: Escape From The Pit
Let's Play Avernum
Let's Play Avernum: Escape from the Pit

And I'm glad this is finally here. Unfortunately I already own it on Humble so will wait for better discount. Now get
Nethergate: Resurrection (Wishlist entry) here as well! ;-)

Sweet, a full 400 votes completed. :-) I actually emailed Spiderweb about this 10 days ago and they responded, "Happily, I may have some good news for you in the next few weeks."

Still, it'd be nice to see to see another release from a major publisher.
