Daliz: Haha.. you are right of course.
Still that leaves me a little bit of time to play cRPGs. Speaking of which, I haven't played the last Avadon game yet :)

gamesfreak64: Only the last one ? i need to play and finish all the games , and the game before this one was very demanding on my system, all the old games work a charm but the later versions seem to hogging my cpu, maybe its because the 'engine' or whatever they call the code for a game is getting cpu hungry compared to the old titles.

Anyway i read the 'engine' has changed so i am curious how much hogging this code will do, ( the last game , the one before this one is quite a hogger) i mean a game like that should run a charm on a quad core 2,67 ghz and 8 gb ram and GTX 750 ti with 2 gb ram.

I will try the demo first.
Yes, only the last, imagine! I have actually finished Avadon 1 and 2, and they were pretty good. Now I'm going to play the last Avadon before diving into Avernums.

viperfdl: Damn, that reminds me that I haven't even played the original, yet.
Me neither :D

00063: Bought the whole series + Avernum - Escape From The Pit and Avernum 2 - Crystal Souls in a bundle some time ago, yet i barely touch it, gonna be awhile before i buy this.
Same here, but I didn't even downloaded them. However it looks that it was good decision to buy, because the games cost now 2× or 3× more...

I own so many games i won't be able to finish them all i guess unless i start gaming 24/7 .
i tried the demo but the cpu keeps hogging at 25% - 30% which shouldn't happen cause the min req. says: 1.2 ghz , there is no mention of double/quad so i assume its a single core 1.2 ghz cpu
The last game , rleased before this one has exact same problems: the exe file hogs cpu at 25-30% which will make the fans spin at warpspeed ( fans are new and proeprly installed so i guess the code changed compared to his first games, i can run these without problems.

Avernum 3: Ruined World

Minimum system requirements - Windows: 7 / 8 / 10
Processor: 1.2 GHZ
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics: 256 MB VRAM
Anyway, i guess i wait a few months. and get this game at a good sale, this would be my first vogel game i did not buy at release because of cpu performance issues, my pc should be able to run the game like a charm.
No mentioning of double or quad core so i safely assume it's a single core cpu @ 1.2 ghz.

yes the price went up... guess thats because life is getting more expensive by the day, the newly released games have insane listprices:
39.99 EU, 44.99 EU 49 EU or more euros thats a lot, the positive side is i can't play these games cause its 3d/fpp, the good thing is: it will save me lots of money, so it's not that bad that mainly new games arrive :D

mystral: All I can tell you is that the "instructions" .pdf file is a pretty decent manual at 34 pages, more than enough to explain what you need to know about the game.
Then it's actually quite stupid to list the manual as an add-on which you have to buy separately and risk a lot of fuss and low ratings for the game because of it.
So are these current editions the ones to get for the best complete experience?.
Good to see this kicking and getting out, he's certainly keeping busy.

File size differences between the new installer vs the old one, is about 10x. Comparing Avernum 1 vs Escape from the pit (16Mb vs 160Mb) so i think it's heavily a graphical upgrade.

Still, i feel bad i've only played Geneforge 1 so far, and have so many other of his games yet to play.

But i'll fix that, got a couple games downloaded, and i'll see about playing them starting tomorrow.

edit: Yep, a bit more than a graphical upgrade (including music and sound effects and tutorials), the original games seem very much a win 3.11 game and while playable, i'd probably prefer to only play the newer ones if only for sanity reasons...

Yes, very much so. Not only is the matter of the old games barely scaling to 1024 x 768 no longer an issue, but there were other issues as well.
How is the plot/story for these games? I bought Eschalon Book 2 a few years back and it was just a grind for me. I never finished it and have no desire to go back.

Well, don't worry. Eschalon is a different company. The plot and story for Exile/Avernum has been very deep and well told. They've been able to touch on various social issues that would be in an underground cavern society made of rejects from the surface.

Also, walking speed won't be an issue in Avernum, as the party moves at a fair clip. (And you have a party which helps smooth things over.)
Avernum / Avadon series :
Remake ? Not remake ? Buy this or buy all ? Now i'm completely lost .

The same here.
I wanted to peek in the Geneforge series, but I expect a remake any time soon, that would make me very upset.

I ve bought the origi al avernum series... Now I m rebuying the remakes.

If Jeff remakes the Geneforge games, which he still hasn't confirmed he'll do despite plenty of people asking for him to do it, it won't be for at least 3 years. He explicitly said he would work on a new series after Avernum 3, and it takes him about a year and a half to make a game usually.

And while the older Geneforge games (1-3 mostly) could definitely use a remake due to having pretty outdated UI, 4 and 5 are fine and mostly in line with the games he's made recently, so you can play those.
Thanks for the info mystral.

Avadon And Avernum's remakes (remasters?) are on the same engine, so they're in my opinion the best way to start with Jeff Vogel's cRPGs. They've got the most comfortable interface, control, very nice character development model etc. However, I admit that I prefer much more Avernum than Avaddon - while the first one is quite interesting with its universe, plot etc, Avaddon seems to be some of... Well, Jeff Vogel was inspired with Game of Thrones during creating this series, and I admit that I'm not a big fan of it, so I didn't even end the first Avadon.

Anyway - all those games (Avernum 1-3 remaster and Avadon series) have demo versions, so I would highly recommend to take a look at them first (to check if you like this style of game at all).

I would definitelly not recommend to start with "original" Avernum 1-3 (not to mention about Exile 1-3), for my taste, they're very "archaic" and it's simply not worth it to be bothered with uncomfortable control/interface, when you can have (almost) the same content set in better engine.

So, to conclude - I would recommend to buy at least first Avernum remake/remaster (Escape from the Pit), IMO it's the best option to start. I've started with that game (played in Geneforge series after finishing Avernum: EftP), and while I admit that overall Geneforge series is the most interesting and original, I would never start if it wasn't for remastered Avernum.
