EoB was one of the first games (along with Prince of Persia, Centurion, Civilization, Lemmings, Solidarność, Elvira and F-29 Retaliator) which introduced me to PC after really long period of 8-bits gaming. It was first game which introduced me to RPG PC genre and took me the most time to play on PC to get to the end. That's why. :)

DM2 was released by Interplay so maybe this is good track to start?

Normally a sane corporate developer wouldn’t fix non-critical issues in a game just a couple of weeks from launch. But “sane” and “corporate” doesn’t really describe us that well so in our madness we decided to do one more build this week. The build improves the behavior of certain spells, fixes a non-fatal level scripting bug and we couldn’t resist balancing stats of two monsters while we were at it. Olli also fixed a minor animation issue with door pullchains that manifested only on 4:3 displays. None of the issues were critical and we could have waited for a post-launch patch but we really can’t keep our fingers off this thing, it seems!

Observant readers probably understand the dire consequences of these actions: Yes, I owe Antti a beer. Any recommendations btw.? I’m looking for something that I can buy here in Finland for an indie-affordable price. (Those who missed last week’s post are probably totally clueless what I’m talking about )

buy from GOG: only get DRM-free edition + little more extras + 100% assurance you will have source to download DRM-free game from even in distant future
buy from devs: get both - little less extras + I dont care about Steam.

I agree 100% with you there.. I don't even have a Steam account even though I could use one for the HIB games.

I would add one more reason to buy from GOG though, for peeps that really don't care about Steam.
Having access to your game through a single library is quite the convenience to my eyes. The need to create an account just for a one time deal and keep track of your name/pass is such a bother! And I'm not sarcastic here.

PS: The only (slightly) worrying thing is that the music seems to be only part of what is included in the game ("main music theme"). The whole soundtrack would be preferable of course.

Hmm, I'm torn between pre-ordering from the developer and GOG. Pre-ordering from the developer does seem like the better value to me, but it would be nice to have the game in my GOG collection...

Or maybe not. GOG team clearly stated and proved that the service can go down anytime and maybe never return again. That's what we learn with the ill fated GoG PR stunt, and for that GOG can never be trusted on that front.

That's only if I was willing to buy directly from steam again, and I am not. Steam screwed me because their credit card processor messed up. So the only way I will get a steam game is if a bundle or retail / other store sells the product. Never again will I buy direct from steam. If I could convert my entire steam game library to a DRM free version I would and erase steam permanently. But since that isn't going to be possible, I can still use their service and get free stuff in the process if they do these steam achievement things during their "sales" and not directly give them money again. ;)

But you can download it, store on a couple of usb hdds for redundancy, and install it long after gog dies. You can't have this guarantee with steam, now.

True lots of people didn't like the PR stunt and I wasn't really happy about it either. But still it was a excellent trial run for what to expect if it did happen. GoG clearly said something was up (even though it was a bad PR stunt half truth), then they said they would enable people to go download all their games they bought in a few days. Since all their games are DRM-Free once you downloaded it was yours to keep forever and could install and uninstall at your leisure even if their service was gone. Exactly what should be expected should an online distributor go out of business IMHO. Since I archive all my games locally as I buy them, even the PR stunt didn't bother me much. The only annoying thing about it for me was there would have been no other alternative to GoG where all games sold are DRM-Free. As for trust, I trust GoG more than any other online digital distributor on the planet today. Since I know once I buy it and download the product, I literally own it and can uninstall / install it at will.

If the same thing happened to any other system I guarantee you all your games would be lost. Even though Gabe has stated a while back that if Steam ever shutdown they'd come up with a solution to enable you to keep your games, I am certain he was only talking about Valve published games not any of the other ones that not only use Steam's DRM but some other third party variant.

GoG is the only place you could be certain that the games you bought are licenses you own. Steam games you rent or I believe the word they use is subscribed to. You don't buy a license to use the software you buy a subscription to play through steam, so if steam goes, they are completely without legal responsibility to provide a method for you to play the game without the steam service. Almost every other service is exactly the same in one way or another. Either you are dependent on them or if not on some activation server that might disappear in a few years with only some vague hope they will provide you a patch to run the game you bought without the activation server.

Buy a game save indie!
