Hello,
I am a person who always plays adventure or puzzle games. Now I thinking I would like to broaden my horizons and try a new genre.

I thought I would try a FPS, but because of my lack of experience, I figure I will not be able to keep up with the new releases. However, there are so many older ones out there, I don't know which one to try first. (I thought maybe Unreal Gold?)

Any help anyone can give me will be most appreciated.

Thank you,
Phoenix
P.S. Just LOVE GoG.com!
Unreal Gold is probably a best pick for a start.

if you don't mind sprite/old graphics, I'd aslo recommend Blood: One unit whole blood
I was going to say DOOM but since it isn't on GOG and you mention Unreal Gold then yes, I think that would be an excellent choice for an old school FPS game that's held up well for its age. I mean, personally I think it looks good. It's colorful too! It's fun to shoot colorful things in colorful places!

Seriously though, I really do think Unreal is a cool choice and you should have fun with it. Plus the multiplayer in it can be played with bots so you can try that on for size too if you don't find anyone online to play against. FPS multiplayer is a lot of fun too.
Doom or Dark Forces if you're willing to use another store.
Unreal is a decent start. It begins also with something resembling a story, before it goes to full scale action. Good pick.

Apart from that, there are different forms of "sub-genre" for FPS. It depends if you either want "arcade shooters" like Doom and Painkiller or "interactive movies" like most military shooters nowadays.

Both has its merits. I would try one of each later.

Modern FPS are generally more forgivable if you start out on them, since they are the lowest common denominator with regenerative health and guns+ammo everywhere. Older FPS have a health bar and are more stringy with ammo, but the really old ones have no mouse support (or a crappy one, since the game architecture isn't suited for them) and pixelated graphics.

This might be a thorn for some, but just get COD1 with the expansion for a health bar, and COD2 for regen health and better graphics (still old by today's standard). Or go for Painkiller.
On this site - Painkiller (braindead action and fun), Unreal (scope and fantasy), Duke 3D (fun) or Deus Ex (story, RPG light). On another site, Halflife 1 and 2.

Your best choices would be:

-Unreal: Gold = A great classic of the genre, one of the most technically advanced game of it's time. It has an awesome campaign, but also excellent multiplayer, where you can play both with/against human players AND bots. It is probably one of the best-aged games on GOG

-Postal 2 = This is an extremely violent and disgusting game. In it, you can piss on people, use a cow-head infected with anthrax as a weapon, and many other gross things. One of my favorite games of all time :D

-Duke Nukem: Atomic Edition = This is classic "old-school" type of FPS. It has a lot of dark humor.

-Serious Sam: First Encounter = This is an old-school FPS but with more "modern" elements of gameplay. This is probably the first one you should pick up.

-Blood: One Unit Whole = Another gory old-school FPS, in the vein of Duke Nukem.

-Unreal Tournament 2004 = Best multiplayer FPS ever made (except for Quake 3 of course)

Buy any of those games above and you'll be ok.

Also, may i suggest you buy Sacrifice if you haven't already. It's an action/strategy game, with unique gameplay and awesome artistic direction.

EDIT: Forgot "Far Cry", which is awesome.

For an easier experience on FPS games, choose either the Unreal games or XIII.
As I recall, XIII is usually pretty gentle paced, and it's likable. Can't remember anything in it that'd make it "not first FPS material". Unreal is nice too.

My first FPS was Duke Nukem 3D, and in it you don't run, you fly around on a rocket engined hoverboard. :p

But apart from that it is just a shitty game. The novelty last for a couple of minutes, but after that you have shooter worthy of the worst shovelware shooters have to offer.

Controls, graphics, gameplay just about everything is bad about this game.

It is an interesting piece to try and fiddle around with, but it should be in no way considered a decent shooter.
XIII really deserves the sequel it never had :-/

don't forget the loading between zones, I tried it and felt I spent more loading the game then playing it. Really do not like it at all. Definitely not recommended as a first try FPS, not even if you like the "humour", it will just annoy you.

SimonG: snip
I had a lot of fun with Postal 2. But it's a game I'd only recommend to play if you're pissed at someone / something.

It's definitely NOT a good game to start an adventure with FPS games.

But I don't know. Many times in shop queue I have that feeling "it would be easier just to shoot everybody and piss on their corpses", and it that game, you can do that :P

Actually it should. Neither the controls, graphics nor gameplay are as bad you(and others) claim. I had a lot of fun with that game(before changing to Win7 i played it about every other day) so please, don't drive the guy away from a unique and very enjoyable experience.
