Export: Remember in MGS when you had to look on the back of the case to get a certain characters codec frequency so you could call them? That was pretty awesome - though that wasn't intended as anti-piracy so much as it was just a typical Kojima touch. It was already enough into the internet era that it was simple enough to check online for stuff like that.

That's what I get for scanning the thread rather than reading it properly. Though I didn't know they repeated it on the GC version, that's pretty cool.

Yeah, the odd choice of the term 'package' threw me a bit though. "On the back of the package? Which package?" Damn, Blockbuster... I wrote the frequency on the back of the Blockbuster case. <.<

StingingVelvet: I wish that kind of copy protection still worked as I always kind of enjoyed it. I like manuals and boxes, so using elements of that to solve a game puzzle is neat for me.

romulus16: Any chance did you happen to play quest fro glory 4 and find the manual joke in the adventures guild?
Shamefully that is a series I never played. I hope for a GOG release.

It's quite good... my mum bought me the first two at a garage sale about 12 years ago at the garage sale then last year I went on a mad ebay hunt for 3 & 4 (since amazon doesnt send old games to australia) .... 3 and 4 (specially 3) are very glitchy though... D: id say day one purchase on gog :D

Oh man, I couldn't live without the amazon marketplace for getting PC classics. I feel for you.

During the time those games came out I was playing my mother's adventure games and just dipping my feet into FPS games on the PC, so I missed the Quest for Glory games because she never got them for whatever reason.

TheCheese33: Confession: I throw out all my DS game boxes as soon as I get the game and store the cartridges in a bag. That usually doesn't cause any problems until today. I was playing some Professor Layton and the Box Thing when a puzzle pops up telling me to "LOOK IN THE MANUAL!" Of course I don't have the manual, so I have to look up the puzzle online in order to progress.

That just sucks.
Was that the puzzle with the train ticket and you have to figure out something it says on it? If so, you don't really need the manual (I didn't need to look). The code on the ticket already looked like it was some text trick like mirrored text or similar because of the lines splitting them in half. By drawing over it you can very quickly spot the trick.
You throw away boxes? You deserve to be locked out of Layton.

you deserve it
Boxes... thrown away!? D’:

But they are to be displayed like DVD’s and book, for they sometimes have delicious box/manual art. And and and and :<

Geez you should try op shops sometimes.... i found police quest in pursuit of death angel at one last year and my mum found (and thankfully bought for me) the 11th hour, and Tex Murphy under a killing moon and Pandora detective (Pandora big box and the CD cases inside were factory sealed lol)

Oh, thanks for telling me. A game anyone should not buy.

Do not buy stuff with protections. It is the only way to put some sense in firms head.
I like keeping my DS boxes. They are considerably more convenient than the old console game boxes, serving both as a protective storage for the game (when it is out of the carrying case I have for the DS and gthe games) and keep all the supplemental materials (or almost all, SMT: Strange Journey came with a CD that does not fit the regular box, haha).

And if I ever want to get rid of te game, selling it with the box is better, I guess.
