Thanks to industry legend Charles Cecil and Revolution Software, the original version of the acclaimed adventure game is available as an exclusive bonus to gamers who purchase Broken Sword Director’s Cut.

After the release of Broken Sword Director's Cut, we saw lots of you asked for the original game. We've joined forces with Charles Cecil to bring the 1996 version of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (a.k.a. The Circle of Blood) to GOG's catalogue. Users who purchase the high-resolution Broken Sword Director’s Cut will receive the acclaimed original as a free downloadable bonus. Anyone who has already purchased Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Director’s Cut can download the classic for free from the bonus materials.

Broken Sword Director’s Cut with the original version of the game is exclusively available at GOG.com for the low price of $5.99.

Adokat: I never got the fascination for the original version. What's so great about it over the Director's Cut?

Nergal01: 1. Those of us who played the original tend to notice things missing in the DC. There are missing animations, missing music tracks and sound effects and some toned-down violence, as well. One example: stepping into that club in Syria and not hearing any music at all felt just wrong to me.
2. Nico's sub-plot seems promising enough at first, but it ends a little too abruptly, for my taste. And since it doesn't really add that much to the plot....let's just say I liked the concept of expanding her character, but I didn't like the execution that much.
3. David Gibbons' artwork doesn't fit. Now, don't get me wrong. I love his style. It's just that in this case it seems out of place compared to the art direction in the rest of the game. Besides, why do all characters except for George and Nico look like caricatures, and why are they constantly staring like they've seen a ghost?

Now, all of that doesn't make the DC a bad game. Far from it. Those are simply things that bother me about the DC. And so I'm happy and thankful that GOG gives us the original version.
OK, I didn't know what was different. To me, though, the Nico additions were good, and the gameplay was much more convenient. I haven't played the original, so there's no nostalgia from me.

Fair enough. :)

Togedude: Nice to hear that I have a choice now. But, can anyone who's played both tell me which one I should start with? I've never played a Broken Sword game, and it seems that there are just as many people who laud the Director's Cut as those who despise it.
Start with original version.
Just for the record I re-purchased this on GOG just to support them adding the original version.

Also, is there any way to edit my scathing review on the product page, since it is now inaccurate?
FINALLY!

The biggest problem I had with the Directors cut was that they spoiled a lot of the story just off the start for anyone that's new. It would have been nice to have Nico additions added at a later time, like when your talking to her. The Original Broken Sword: Circle of Blood had a great opening that made you want to what the heck was going on.

Well, if you like the Director's Cut better, or the Original, now you can choose the game to play. I bet a lot of people are going to re-write their reviews of the game now.
Paris in the fall... :)

Excellent stuff, my brother who bought this really wanted the original version too and ta-dah! I gotta surprise him later with these news haha. :D

Awesome work guys and girls at GOG.com!
Thank you! I bought the Director’s Cut version here on GOG and I played through it a couple of days ago. Liked the new Nico side-story and the new graphic novel feel of the game. It would be nice if the blue dot highlights could be turned off but as this is a port from the ipad/ipod version it does't bother me so much. The easter eggs to unblock the comics were great. Overall a great revamp of one of the best games ever.

I already have a boxed version of the original Broken Sword but having it as a convenient download is so great! And as a free add-on to the directors cut! You guys all rock so muck!

Thank you Charles and all the people at Revolution! Can't wait for the The Smoking Mirror Remastered. You care about your gamers, and bringing great gaming experiences to us all, no nasty DRM, all about the game and the gamer.

Thanks to all the fantastic people at GOG. You guys made me enjoy gaming again.
So many great games, so little time to play them!
Thank you VERY much Revolution and GOG!
GOG team marches onward showing competitors what REAL GAMING is about. Long live to good old games.

rs2yjz: i just began the dc when it went on sale, why do you like this better?

the_voivod: Don't get me wrong - inferior (IMO) or not the DC is still very good. It's hard to truly mess up a classic, after all, but it simply didn't gel with me. I thought the extended storyline with Nicole simply didn't add much aside from extra time, and was shown up by the original content. I didn't like the portraits during conversations, I (especially) didn't like the jumps in audio quality that went on throughout the game, nor the same with the visual character sprites (including video cut-scenes, too). Not to mention it felt dumbed down with the hotspots issue and the mini-game puzzles.

Incidentally, does anybody remember the original installer for BS with the Breakout clone as it copied across the files? I was useless at is as obviously there was lots of lag, but I've not really seen anything else like it for the PC. Reminds me of Tekken for the PlayStation with Galaga.

Edit: Aaaah, seriously, one minute late to address the points? Blah.
I'm going to stop and play the original first : D
As someone who's been a fan of the Broken Sword games for a long time now I am so glad to see the original version included with the DC release. Now lets see if the remastered version of Broken Sword 2 comes to GOG.com (I'd buy it for the iPhone but mine is a bit screwed up at the moment)
Ah, cool, thanks so much for this!
Great!!!! Thanks GOG! The original is far better then the remake, especially the intro video. Much better sense of atmosphere and intrigue. The remake seems to have lost a lot in translation. If you are new to Broken Sword, I highly recommend playing the original first.
I'm pleased GOG & Charles could work something out. I got the directors cut free for the iPad / iPhone over Xmas and while the new intro is nice, its no where near as good as the original BS intro.

For me the story is about George, not Nico and having her do the opening narration just felt wrong. Also I agree with gamekid, one of the great things with the original opening is you have no clue whats going on. All you know is there is a maniac clown leaving a bomb in the cafe.
Very nice move indeed
