keeveek: This is a commont myth that human uses only 10% of his brain abilities. But it's a myth, which is totally stupid from biological point of view.
That's a myth, is it? I have heard comments on that subject but would appreciate yours. One thing I heard is that a lot of the "unused" parts of the brain are redundant systems, basically for use if needed due to damage in other parts of the brain.

I know nothing about biology, so if it's totally stupid please help me not to be confused by it. :-)
The brain uses 20% of the whole body energy having only around 3% of the body mass. There is no logical explanation why nature would create such huge energy consuming organ without 100% usage.

In nature, there's nothing we got "as backup". If the brain wasn't used in 100% of it's abilities, it would shrink in size long time ago, because it would be pure WASTE of energy.

We're using 100% of our brains. Ok, Obama is using 10% (Polish prime minister , Donald Tusk, 5%).

What the heck is an appendix, then? :P

The thing in the book that lists where topics can be found in the book?

A "good germ" factory apparently

Depending on context, what you're referring to would either be a glossary or a table of contents.

In fact, Journal of Evolutionary Biology published results of their reaserch saying that appendix may have really important job to do in case of infection (higher immunity due to immunity cells being produced there).

Also, tallbone/coccyx bone has some application, for example as support for many muscles around it.

This is the reason why tallbone and appendix haven't disappeared completely. Because they are USEFUL in size and shape they exist.

And saying, as someone said, that having TWO ears and eyes is useless is just bollocks. I hope that was a joke :P

Oops I mean it's that extra section added to some books with more info on subjects approached in said book, containing things like footnotes/charts/diagrams/etc.

Well that's gotta suck for those who had them removed. :\

Also all the ones who had their tonsils removed when they are now found to fight bacteria in the throat.

I did not say useless. I said "backup". That's a big difference.

Yes, you're absolutely right. These organs are of course not necessary to LIVE but also it's really HELPFUL having them ;)

It's not backup. With only one eye, humans would be already eaten by other predators, because withouth 3D vision and ability to hear well from all directions is DEADLY. Not even saying that simply moving around with just one eye is difficult , easy to trip, etc.
Having two eyes and ears is not backup, they're used in 100% for the whole time

So why do not we have eye on back of the head? It would be also easier to not be surrounded :P

Conclusion: the more eyes the better - BUT compare situations:
a) you have two eyes and lose one eye - you still can see something
b) you have one eye and lose one eye - you've just lost one of your senses

Bah, many pirates from days of yore did just fine with one eye, and one leg, etc. :p

:)
I've decided to have juice for breakfast, the kind made out of kale, spinach, cucumbers, carrots, celery, and all that other green stuff that is hard to get enough of. To this end I bought a fancy juicer and had my first glass this morning...

it tasted like ass. It's the dietary equivalent to endurance training for a marathon, good for you, but yeah, not much fun.
