Building castles in the sky.

No Man's Sky, the ambitious open-space exploration game in a procedurally-generated universe, just received a massive update appropriately named NEXT.

It brings a whole bunch of changes and additions across the board, most notably:

- Option to switch between first and third person view at will
- Visual upgrades to ships, NPCs, buildings, terrain textures, space vistas - pretty much everything
- You can now build far more complex bases anywhere on the planet
- Build your own fleet, upgrade it, and send it out or keep it close while exploring a system

The multiplayer element of NEXT is not yet included in the DRM-free edition of the game. Read more about the delay below:

"From launch, the DRM-free edition of No Man's Sky will include all single-player content introduced by NEXT: third-person mode, upgraded visuals, better base building, player customization, and more.

However the multiplayer component will not be ready at launch; we expect it to be released later this year as full multiplayer parity remains in the pipeline.

For a small, independent studio, developing the feature across multiple platforms is a hugely ambitious and technical challenge which resulted in this delayed release. Hello Games is however joining forces with GOG.COM to introduce full multiplayer via the GOG Galaxy platform.

We appreciate your immense support and patience.

- Hello Games & GOG.COM Team"

blackiris: I am a day one player. For 2 years HG has provided free updates. NEXT is a free update. As per the above release notes the DRM Free edition will come later this year. I chose DRM Free GOG on principle. I am willing to wait for the DRM Free multiplayer elements and thank you HG and GOG for not throwing in the towel on us. Until it does come out there is much to see and explore.
I was about to say this.

This isn't even CLOSE to being GOG's fault. They put out the updates that are given to them, and contrary to people's whinging opinions, we don't get "crippled" games much. They've progressed greatly since even the start of the Galaxy platform, while STILL keeping it optional, despite what must be tremendous publisher pressure.

I guess, however, that rage focused at the wrong entity feels better in the modern age.

I'm just waiting for the offline backup to be updated, and I don't mind hanging out a bit for that.
No GOG fault. Was going to get it now for the discount, to give them a chance after the 2016 crap. Now they are delaying the GOG users? F**k them, not here not in Steam, my money will be for games that support GOG premises. I repeat, no GOG fault, cause they release the same crappy game here and in STEAM, if the devs dont want to update the GOG version NOW, is their choice.

GOG cant do anything, think about it, what they can do? Retire the game from the platform??? And all the users that bought the game at the start in GOG? They just can do all the legal stuff to made the devs release the same game here as in others stores. But thats it for me, Im not getting this game ever. This shaddy tactics they keep are not what I want.

But, but.. multiplayer is the main thing about this update. Definitely everyone on GOG should be offered a refund - players who want to stay DRM free on principle and don't care for multiplayer will not ask for a refund, the rest of us will. Problem solved for all.

I feel scammed. Last time I got a game on GOG for a long while...

Migaloo: So what happens to all our progress and bases when multiplayer is added?
I think they meant the multiplayer part which involves joining other people's games because even before this update we could have bases and use online features such as detecting other player's activity and naming planets/galaxies

I just wish you would have told us a bit earlier is all, rather than waiting to the very last second.

I can have patience and wait, It was the time spent watching the updates roll out to others and starting to get excited and having it pulled out from under me right at the end that annoyed me.

It felt somewhat cheap and cowardly not to be up front with us earlier.

Uhm.... you are aware of all the features that Hello Games promised would be in the game Day 1 and weren't right?

inwrd: Bye-bye, GoG. And F U.
This kind of comment is over the top and childish. Refrain from it.
More push for the BS client.

It doesn't affect me as I wouldn't play it multiplayer anyway, but it's total BS.

Who would be his second? Robocop, Kain, or the Assassin droids?

I do and that's why I didn't buy it day 1. HG sort of made up for lots of it and I decided to get this game. That was when the Steam and GOG version were equal. Now, with AR and NEXT, us GOGers are left behind.

None of them are tough enough for this job.
