NX is the codename for the new console. Also this winter new account-based system will launch on WiiU, and probably it will be used for mobile and eventually PC platform too.

I doubt many of those mobile games will make their way over here. I have a feeling that most of them are intended for the Asian markets, especially China and Korea where consoles don't really have much of a stronghold and F2P gaming rules the roost. The vast majority of mobile games are unprofitable here in the West.

As for the new console, I'm looking forward to it. The Wii U was my first Nintendo console since the Game Boy Advance, and it made me a Nintendo fan. If the big N can combine their famed quality control with comparable hardware power of its competitors, I suspect that it may have a winner on its hands.

Then again, I suspect that a big part of the reason why many of the third parties turned their backs on Nintendo was specifically because of Nintendo's more stringent quality control. If you look at the state that many games are released in on the PS4 and XO (and especially the PC). If it was all about the sales, then you can be sure that support for the Xbox One would have got off to a slow start as well.

I want Legend of Zelda titles, Earthbound, Secret of Mana and other stuff!

Too expensive. Also the price for digital titles are just insane on Nintendo platforms.
Nintendo needs to adapt to the changing market and also pick a decent console name this time.

To further emphasize the point that Nintendo isn't giving up on dedicated games systems, president Satoru Iwata said at a press conference in Tokyo today that Nintendo is working on a new console, codenamed NX, with a "brand-new concept." No further details were revealed, and NX will be some way off; Iwata says the company hopes to announce more next year.
So they've finally realized that the success of the Wii was due to the novelty of it and not because the whole world always secretly preferred to play games using motion control.

Unfortunately, novelty alone is not enough to guarantee success either, and I'm afraid they haven't drawn that conclusion yet. All in all, I think this next console will make or break Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer.

that they are but still less insane then buying the actual games

secret of mana ? 49 euro

breath of fire 2 ? 89 euro

earthbound ? 250 euro and up

with pricetags like that the wii U is a bargain
Nintendo entering the smartphone market! (Too bad I don't own a smartphone lol) Anyways, that is good that they are joining the mobile market, I don't like cell phone games, but, Nintendo needs to adapt in the market. It would be like having only arcade machines in the USA in the 2010s lol. I love arcade but here in USA its not a thing anymore, since the 80s, and mobile market is booming, so I think original content would be good for Nintendo!
(yes I know Japan still has a huge arcade movement)

Also, there new console NX, hmm, well that is nice, but man, the Wii-U just came out a couple ago, and it is STILL overpriced, why I never bought one. I have had EVERY home console from Nintendo EXCEPT SNES, and Wii U. I still have a black Wii which I enjoy, last year, I just bought A boy and his Blob, and it is fun.

I miss the good old days, when a console would have 5+ years lifespan, like the NES, SNES, than after awhile the 5 year mark went down to 3-4, which is still better, but man, now its like every 2-3 years new consoles come out, and the prices keep going up.

IMO the Wii U should be $200 retail now, and or $149 .

uh the ps3 and xbox 360 lasted 8 and 9 years

the wii lasted 7 years

the ps2 a whopping 14 years

its the wii U thats an aberration its being curtailed because its and over priced under supported failure

and yes it should be around 150

I didn't know anything about Sony or Microsoft's consoles, and yes the Wii has lasted many years... I think NES was 8 or so as well... 1985-1990s, so around 7 or so. Wii U stinks, I love Nintendo and I wanted Pikmin 3, but I can't justify the prices... games are now $60 mostly, instead of the $50 and I though $50 was a lot , and the console name I don't like, marketing, and after all these years still $300? Come on price drop it if you want it to sell.

There were only two generations to date that had such short lifespans - the 16-bit generation (Sega Mega Drive + Super Nintendo = around 6 years) and the 32-bit generation (PlayStation + Saturn = around 7 years for the PS1, around 3 for the Saturn). In fact, you could even argue that the 16-bit generation started with the Amiga, putting the 16-bit generation's lifespan at 10 years.

The 8-bit generation (NES/Sega Master System/C64 etc.) held out for 12 years.

The accusation of long generational spans is a symptom of gamer impatience and unrealistic demands, nothing more.

I love long lifespans... I love how the NES was such a long way on market, and 8 bit did last long time until 1996... and now it is revived again. I love retro games!
