Welcome to the new era of CD-ROM games! There’s an insane amount of space, so what to do with it? Oh I have an idea, let’s take top-tier actors (Mark Hamill, Jason Bernard, Thomas Wilson) throw them into the great Wing Commander universe, develop a new engine, write an even more epic story and voila: you have Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger! We’ve added this classic title to GOG.com today, available for only $5.99!

You are Luke--er--I mean Col. Christopher "Maverick" Blair (played by Mark Hamill). After the destruction of Concordia, you are transferred to an old space ship carrier the TCS Victory, by the order of Admiral Tolwyn. Your mission is to destroy the catlike Kilrathi for good and ensure the survival of humanity. Without delving into spoilers, you are up for yet another episode of this epic struggle between two star nations battling for dominance--and survival. Enter into the life of Maverick, talk to your wingmen on the ship and in outer space, or pursue a romantic relationship with a fellow pilot dancing on the razor’s edge.

With the budget of an A-grade Hollywood movie, Wing Commander 3 incorporates FMVs on a whole new level, with more than 3 hours of cinematic storytelling. They’re not there only for your viewing pleasure: you get to live the life of a Confederation ace pilot in dynamic cinematic style. Time-constrained decisions, vast dialogue options, and plot-critical conversations all occur on film during your time aboard the TCS Victory. Apart from the flashy movies, Wing Commander 3 has a whole new space combat engine. Sprites are so early 90’s, and now it’s all about polygons. Behold the colossal battle ships in their full glory, you can even fly into a dreadnought hangar and shoot it from inside out!
Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger flies up to a whole new orbital with new graphics, new FMVs and, one of the best epic war plots in the history of entertainment are the ingredients for space-sim success.

Special thanks for all the great goodies we managed to get with this release goes to Ben Lesnick from Wing Commander News. You're the man, Ben!

Hillsy_: Played and finished this on the old 3DO, great game with a great end sequence. Tempted with this, but probably difficult to get the game running now.
o.O install with gog installer... run game.. whats so hard?
Ohhh momma. The best space combat game EVER has finally arrived. Tremendous goodies also included. To say great job would be an understatement. Awesome!!
There's actually a fan cut movie made of Heart Of The Tiger floating in the internet. They've cut in some game footage for space comabt bits, but other than that they've just cut the cutscenes in a feature movie.
Welease Wing Commander Pwophecy! The last and Gweatest!
OMG.........I was just looking at this game a few days ago and wondering if my 3DO system will hook up to my 42" plasma tv so I can play this. Well now I don't have to, although I bet it would look good on the big big screen. I may still give it a try, but I'll download it after I finish this. Now I just wish now they could bring back StarFlight by Binary Systems.
F4LLOUT,
Jason Bernard was the only one who could make Captain Eisen's character as excellent as he was. Sadly, he passed away shortly after making Wing Commander IV and before they did WC Prophecy so a hoped-for cameo could not be done. There was a tribute site to him on a site called Worlds of Origin which published many fan-written articles about him. His death was taken hard by many of us in the Wing Commander fan community, and it took me a long time to complete IV since Bernard's passing made me too sad to play the game. For anyone buying Wing Commander III, there are excellent performances all around; Thomas Wilson embodies The Maniac in a way that brings his cockiness and overbearing personality to life, Mark Hamill really plays the veteran pilot in a way you can believe, John Rhys-Davies plays an excellent Paladin, and Malcolm McDowall has the perfect haughtiness and creepiness to bring life to Admiral Tolwyn. I'd even say if you were to put the video segments into a single movie it would blow away the theatrical Wing Commander movie made a few years later.
The space combat is top notch, and the cockpit graphics are excellent, especially in that the cockpit interior graphics could be turned off for more visibility or left on for realism. Also, the extras are excellent especially with the deleted scenes.
Enjoy.
I love this game and it's actually sitting on a shelf next to me. Huge box! I've finished it twice, once with a "bad" ending, and once with a "good" ending. I won't tell more in case I might spoil something, but I recommend to everyone playing the first time to live with the consequences of your actions. If you screw up, see how the story develops. Then hone your skills and finish the game without losing any important missions. It's great!

barleyguy: There was also a DVD-ROM release of this, with DVD quality video. The CD release (here) is the same game, but the video quality isn't as good.

spindown: I think this was the case for Wing Commander 4, not Wing Commander 3. This game was only released on CD-ROM as far as I know.
And you would be right. WC4 was the only WC game released on DVD as far as I know/can find.

Prophecy was planned to be released on DVD, but never was. Luckily, we got our hands on it: http://www.wcnews.com/news/update/8596

You mean THIS ONE HERE ? ;-)
The same was done for WC4 by the way.

A general word of advice for GOG users that are new to the Wing Commander universe:

If it is Wing Commander related, you can be sure to find info about it on the Wing Commander CIC.
MY GOD!!! Finally I can play the 3rd part in the series, I can see those fmvs, I can go beyond the 2nd installment... THANK YOU GOG! For the confederation! Die FURBALLS! (no offence Hobbes...)
wishlisted for now ... ah it's a pity the bottom fell out of the space sim market at the turn of the decade, I did enjoy it so.

Also it's great to see all the nice extras with an EA release. :P

GOG. I LOVE U.XXXXX
"The Behind the Scenes Tape" only made it worth buying for an old fan of the series.
This one has it all, especially with the extras. I originally played the Playstation version with controls that were dodgy at best just so I could see the extra scenes, and here they are provided as outtakes. I need to admit, though, I had fun teasing all my PC Fanboy buddies with the extra scenes. Also, the behind the scenes footage, an entire Wing Commander novel that cannot be found on Kindle. It's also an original novel and not an adaptation of one of the games, so it will give you a different spin on the WC Universe. Also the Brady guide (about $20 at release), the Origin guide, and all the other goodies; this would have been at least $100 back in the day for this "Extra Special Edition" WC3 along with a stop at the bookstore to buy the included novel. My only complaint so far- I don't like playing in a small window so I modified the startup file to fullscreen=true which quickly solved the problem.
Also, I am playing this on my laptop which does not have a joystick (although I'm sure a USB stick will work fine) and I find the keyboard is quite responsive, and by hitting CTRL-M the mouse is enabled as a flight device, preventing the need to pound on the space bar to fire. The mouse is a really good control once you get the hang of it. Advice: If you have a printer, you definitely want to print out the reference card, as this is a true simulator and it has a lot of controls.
Enjoy.
