The time has come to relieve the beginnings of one of the best space flight simulators saga ever created.

Wing Commander 1+2 is a pack containing the first two parts of the acclaimed space flight and combat simulator series by Origin. With this bundle you’ll get an introduction to the epic military conflict between The Confederation and the Kilrathi. Although the war between humans and Kilrathi has lasted for 20 years already, you're just making your presence. As a young pilot, straight from the academy, you’ll either become humanity’s biggest hero or the biggest zero as you're posted on Confederation's flagship - Tiger's Claw. With a cinematic approach to the storytelling and great 3D gameplay, the Wing Commander series is a must-have for every self-respecting gamer.

jadetoto: I just played three missions in the Vega sector. No sound at all : no music, no lasers... I quit the game and when i came back, a bug appeared when i tried to load one of my saves.
Very disappointing, knowing also that the expansions are not included.

PincushionMan: That's very odd, because Wing Commander had music (Adlib-compatible) directed to port 220 or 240, and sound effects (Sound Blaster) on IRQ 7. IIRC, this became an issue later as more computers started shipping with Parallel ports which also used that IRQ setting. Creative later changed the default setting to 5, but older games will tell you the default is 7.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is you should at least have Adlib music - anyone else had this problem in the WC forums?
I cant even get the games to run they just hang when it says expanded memory detected.

thornton_s: I think the speech pack is included with WC2.
Yes, I guess they are. I saw the download size for both WC's and thought "wait, that can't be all the files, can it?". I deducted that perhaps the speech is missing, and I'd really hate to miss the opening cinematic of WC2 without speech. Or the space fights. In any case, I'm relieved now. I still wish we'd get the special missions for the first one, though.

Sorry, sounds like that's one for support.

I know it uses a memory extender (DOS4GW maybe?). I used to use QEMM back in the day to get the memory optimized enough to load it. EMM386 was a hog. Oh, hang on, you said Expanded Memory, which would be XMS... Check the DosBox config, and see if you can disable EMS (EMM386-like) and/or tweak the compatibility knobs of XMS. Maybe you want 2.0 instead of 4.0?

Good luck!
Sounds work with WC2 ! But it looks like much more difficult than when i played it the first time many years ago. Moves are very slow and it's not easy to blast a ship even if it's right in front of you without moving !
Referring to WC1, i remembered too having sounds when taking off and so on. Here, nothing at all !
:-(
EA and or GOG have or have made their choice

Customers also have a choice

For me no expansions no sale

Perhaps the issue is not with the game? Or it may well be, but it's a little harsh to blame GoG or the game before finding out what the actual problem is.

Check the WC directory for a BAT or EXE that looks like config or setup or sbconfig or something. (While running in vanilla DOSBOX with one of your drive links set there). In there, you should see a DOS menu. you'll be able to change your config to match IRQ 5. That should get you the alarm horn, lasers, mass drivers, explosions, etc...

Okay, failing that (as GOG likes to strip out extra EXEs usually), you'll have to tweak the wingcommander.dosbox.conf (something like that) to use IRQ 7.

These sounds were simulated with Adlib and Tandy sound, so you'd at least get a poor approximation of the sound effect.

<GOG support shout-out>
Hey GOG, if people at EA lost the Secret Missions disks, I still have them backed up on 3.5 floppies (the originals failed about a month after I got them!).
</shout-out>

Don't even get me started on WC Armada, bad floppies out of the box and Electronics Boutique (GameStop) wouldn't take it back! Grrr...

They could at least have put the basic sounds such as the lasers or the engines. Nothing appears in WC1 ! I'm not even speaking about the speech pack !
Thanks to PincushionMan for his advises...

I don't believe there was speech in WC, just WC2.

As for the secret missions, it appears that EA didn't include/support them here, either:
Read the final sentence under Wing Commander heading, please.
No expansions? Again? How disappointing. These games are practically useless with out them. Wishlisted until someone higher up gets a clue and actually pleases the gamers.

ThirdWire spoils you, doesn't it?
I've played WC 1 & 2 to death. (Mine, and the Kilrathi's ;) ) I have NOT played the expansions to WC1. Without them, you can add me to the list of those who won't buy it.

Include all of the expansion for 1 & 2, and you've got an insta-buy; not before.

Right! I will not buy "castrated" version of OLD game. I made it for Privateer but it was last time.

Whoever wants expansions please "reply" to this post with full quotation and to another with this and another... We'll make really long post with our demands.
I wonder why we didn't get the versions from The Kilrathi Saga... Gave them a whirl a couple of years back on XP, and they ran perfectly - Not to mention EA released the expansions for free after people grumbled a lot.
I'm not paying for incomplete releases anymore, sorry GOG.
