Mooooreee! That was your reaction when we released Ultima Underworld 1+2, it was the same when we gave you Ultima 1+2+3 and Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar (for free!). And you guys especially know that all we ever want to do is keep you guys happy, so without further ado, we bring you the Age of Enlightenment games of the fantastic Ultima series!

Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is already released and available for free on GOG.com. You can read the description of the game in the previous news post. Why is it included in this game pack? Well, the Ultima series</a> breaks down into three trilogies, and it seemed a shame to break up the lovely symmetry.

Ultima 5: Warriors of Destiny picks up on the story of the Avatar, the hero of Britannia. The country’s benevolent monarch is nowhere to be found, and an usurper named Lord Blackthorn has claimed the throne! It’s your duty as the embodiment of the Eight Virtues to make all wrongs right and recover the world of Britannia from the paws of Blackthorn and his three evil Shadowlords! This installation of the Ultima series expands on the world of Ultima 4 in a number of ways: towns are larger, have more unique buildings, and NPC interaction has evolved. With enhanced dialogues, diverse conversation topics, and a diverse array of characters, Ultima V shows that Lord British kept raising the bar for games looking to call themselves an “RPG.” The day and night cycle affects the gameplay. For example you can’t shop at night because the NPC shopkeepers are asleep! Delve into the world of Britannia and save its inhabitants & moral codex!

Ultima 6: The False Prophet starts out with a bang! You, the Avatar, are captured by demons, imprisoned, and ready to be sacrificed on an altar. Like in all those Hollywood movies, in the nick of time your friends from earlier adventures come in guns a-blazing to save you! You learn that those demon-like creatures are gargoyles, a new race that invaded Britannia and have seized the shrines of Virtue. As you venture forth on your next adventure as the Avatar, you try to understand the true motivations of gargoyles. As the embodiment of the Eight Virtues, the Avatar will understand that his mission is to establish peace and make the two races coexist in Britannia peacefully. Ultima 6 is a one of a kind game which, without over imposing it on the player, tells a story of the evil of human prejudice and ignorance. This is where the motto of Origin Systems, “We create worlds”, is best visible and it really steps up to its name!

Play the full “second” trilogy of Ultima 4+5+6! Now available DRM-free on GOG.com for $5.99.

Note: The character import function does not work yet, but we are doing everything we can to find a solution to this problem and we will update the game as soon as we can get it worked out.
Could someone who bought the bundle give detailed list of bonus content?

grainne6: Are these worth playing even if you never played them when they came out? I'm tempted but they do look very dated - Are they genuinely still good and playable CRPGs or is it just nostalgia that makes people think so?
If you have Dungeon Siege, I would recommend that you play Ultima V: Lazarus and the Ultima VI Project. They tell the same story, with better graphics and easier gameplay. That doesn't mean that the originals are not to be had by anyone with an interest in RPGs. It's just that like any of the "early" RPGs, they were made for those interested in the genre and had more than 8 hours of gameplay to them. So, if you have the time and the willingness to read the manual, then go ahead. You'll thank yourself.
In the immortal words of Buddy Holly, "Well, Alright!!!" I did not see this coming. I really thought the rest of Ultima would be presented sometime in the future in another set of EA releases, but I must say this is a nice surprise.
Yes, that is the proper way to travel, Avatar. All we need now is Ultima 7, but if that is the next time around, that gives us time to go through these three. Of course I won't scream and cry if the next set is The Complete Ultima VII at $5.99 (or even $9.99) but I'm not going to complain. You have made me one happy Avatar. Thanks, thanks, and thanks again. Whatever comes out next, I'll give it a serious look because right now I am very happy with GOG. Also, I love the Python reference.
For those who are wondering what this set is;
Ultima IV- You know that one already!
Ultima V- Buy the set, but you may want to finish IV first if you don't like spoilers as the beginning of V contains spoilers of IV. V expands on the story and develops the characters more fully. Buildings are now multiple story, dungeons are still 3D but more detailed, clocks really work and can be used to check the time in Britannia, and the first really dark Ultima story is told here. I played this on the Apple II when it was originally released, and it was the first ultima where I actually found myself stopping the game to cry. It is also the first game I had to play with the lights on, as it has some really scary parts.
Roleplay wise, it is even more in-depth than IV, and far less forgiving in the combat department. I think the jump in difficulty is similar to the jump between II and III. Many people say VII was the first really dark story, but V, to me, is far darker in many ways.
Choose your allies wisely.
Ultima VI- Here we see a story that is rich in detail, and this time with many side quests. Gone are the scaled towns and 3D dungeons (which will return in their own series, something called Ultima Underword which is available around here somewhere...) and now the whole world is on the same scale. Dungeons and caves are presented in the same top-down view as the overworld, and that lends unity to the whole world. Also cities are now the same scale as the rest of the map, which allows for random houses to appear in the land as well. For the first time, characters all have individual portraits and dialogue, and there is quite a bit of humor here, which is also something that will carry over into VII. Of course music and 256 color graphics are now the norm. This was the first Ultima not to be made for the Apple II but only for the IBM PC, the Amiga, and the Commodore 64 (although the Commodore 64 version is best avoided.) There was also a Super Nintendo version that was surprisingly faithful except without portraits. Of course here you get the portraits and all the good stuff.
I'm off to Britannia now.
I hope GOG will release Ultima 7+8+9 as a trilogy for 6$ too... One can dream :)

I will happily pay $9,99 for each of them (if they are complete).

I will buy the 4+5+6 pack, but I doubt there is any chance I will ever play them (they are too dated for my taste).
A good release but I would query the logic of releasing number 4 free then 4,5 + 6 at a charge.

$6 is not a large sum of money and just releasing 5 + 6 for that to me would make more sense.

Im guessing its GOG showing off its marketing skillz after the whole $5.99 VS $6 topic. Only this time its "oh 3 games for $5.99" instead of "hold on 3 games for $5.99 but one of them is already free."
My work week might be pretty bleh so far but this week's releases are definitely making up for it! :D Just two more games and I'll no longer have to try to do battle with the Ultima series on Win7. Thanks GOG!

Ziosilvio: I think the "correct" answer to this depends on one's approach to games.
In the case of Ultima V and VI, the graphics and gameplay might be outdated, but the stories are sensational, deep and engaging.
Thanks - I have decided to give V and VI a chance. They may well be too dated for me to enjoy but seeing as so many people love them it seems worth a try.
So is this worth buying if I only plan on playing 6?

Or do I have to play 4+5 to enjoy 6?

U6 is an excellent game by itself. (You'll obviously get more out of it if you've played 4 & 5, but if you really don't want to... you could jump right into 6.)

There's a mod for Dungeon Siege and it's supposed to contain the exact story of Ultima 5. So you could play it, and then 6.
