Today we present you with an epic package for all of those who miss Sosaria. After showing you the grandfather of all space-sims (Wing Commander 1+2), we will now introduce you to The Most Fascinating Interactive Adventure of All Time!

Ultima 1: The First Age of Darkness requires you to battle the Dark Wizard Mondain and his minions who seek the destruction of Sosaria. You must face the evil master and his creatures, and make him retreat to his evil lair where you will ultimately destroy him and save the kingdoms of Sosaria!
Ultima 2: Revenge of the Enchantress picks up on the story of the first installment in the series. Minax, an apprentice of Mondain reigns terror and destruction on the land of Sosaria. Blinded by her fury, she has torn the fabric of time and space which resulted in portals opening through the kingdoms. It's your duty to stop her and undo her evil deeds!
Ultima 3: Exodus let’s you travel throughout Sosaria with a group of adventurers rather than on your own. It also features large, detailed locations with many characters to talk to. Discover the famous Yew city and travel through moon-gates to face the spiritual child of Mondain and Minax. Defeat the titular Exodus and save the kingdoms of Sosaria once again.

The wait is finally over, the original Ultima series has finally landed on GOG.com, it’s up for grabs for only $5.99 for the whole trilogy.

Arteveld: Gog damnit! Missed it again!:D
Same, one day eh :)

haydenaurion: Yeah, how do you install those anyways? I unzipped the one for U3 and ran the exe files, but when I tried running the file to play it, it was running too fast and the graphic changes didn't seem to work. I'm not that familiar with DOSbox or patching DOS games.

jczorkmid: Once you unzip the patch, you need to run 'SETM.EXE' to select your sound card (unless you have an external midi-device, you probably want one of the Sound Blaster Pro settings).

After that you run 'ULTIMA3.COM' instead of 'ULTIMA.COM' to launch the game and you should see EGA (16-color) graphics instead of CGA (4-color) as well as hear sounds and music playing.

The patch also disables auto-save when you leave the overland map, die, or win the game. This can be re-enabled (and the music can be disabled) using the 'U3CFG.EXE', but to run that you need the 'CWSDPMI.EXE' file from here: http://homer.rice.edu/~sandmann/cwsdpmi/csdpmi7b.zip

Hope that helps!
Your link for the CWSDPMI.EXE file dosen't work, it just loads continuously. Strangely, the U3CFG.EXE seems to run without the CWSDPMI.EXE file.
Got the graphics working, but i'm not sure about sound and music. Tried some different settings for sound and music. Sound effects seem to be active most of the time, but kind of sound like they're cutting out partially. I don't hear any music other than briefly in the opening screen. Is there alot of music that plays in this upgrade? I think I have a system called Realtek Audio and it might be integrated, not sure.

Strange. I just clicked the link in your reply and it started downloading again here. The music is constant as far as I can tell.

Ok, so firstly, are you doing all this (other than the 'unzip') under DOSBox? You should be (although I suppose it's most important for the game itself), but I'm guessing from your post that you aren't.

I suggest using SETM to select the "Sound Blaster Pro - OPL3", then backup and edit the dosboxULTIMA3.conf file as follows:

Find the [autoexec] section, and change "ultima.com" to "ultima3.com" and save, then run the game from the GOG launcher and you should be good to go.
next 567 and 789 ?
no......

(don't know if the reply went through so reposting)
I unzipped the Ultima 3 upgrade patch into the Ultima 3 program files fold and then ran the EXE files from the Ultima 3 folder as instructed in the readme. I didn't know I needed to run and configure those in DOSbox (?). I found another version of CWSDPMI.EXE, but i'm not sure if it's an up to date version or even how or where to unzip it to. Now i'm confused...
I was going by the instructions here and also found the other download for CWSDPMI.EXE here as well: http://codex.ultimaaiera.com/wiki/Ultima_III_Upgrade_Patch

Update: Tried that Soundblaster setting, but it says "failed to initialize music driver".

Great release for the collectors. Or the seriously hardcore I guess. :D
I know it's off-topic (sorry), but these screenshots remind me of a certain old shareware/freeware game called "Azalta".
Guess it was made around the same time.
I'm a huge Ultima fan ... but the first three games are very very outdated, I'm sorry to say. 4&5&6 will be very worth getting. These three? Not really. They're not horrible but the first three were made when games were still growing and improving massively so they were severely limited by what hardware at the time could do. Because of that, every new game was basically a great deal better than the previous one - the first three are just too primitive and limited in scope. As revolutionary as the games were back then, they didn't age well at all. Still, if you never played them, it's a nostalgic way to find how Ultima was made.
Great, I'm looking forward to the other parts!

Got it all working, but then the game started to run a little slower though probably closer to a normal speed and with some kind of slight input delay. When holding down the arrow keys, my character seemed to keep moving a bit even after releasing the arrow keys which was also odd. Even stranger, it seems to now happen to the other Ultima games even if I uninstall and then re-install. It wasn't doing that when I installed the games without patching earlier.
-- disregard, problem was solved.

Congrats on this landmark release GOG! I hope one day you will have every huge classic that was released available here!

This site is slowly turning into a digital classic game museum of sorts :D
Awesome release. I completely did not expect this one! I just played Ultima 4 for the first a few months ago, so this is definitely on my list. I'm really hoping to see 5 and 6 sometime soon!
Now if this had of been Ultima 4,5 & 6 .... I might have jizzed in my pants ....

They've all always worked that way for me, even on my old 8088 when I first played them.
