We continue the space and sci-fi theme of this week's releases with today's new game in the catalogue. Get ready to travel the universe and engage into close encounters with alien species.

With the release of Star Control 3 for just $5.99 we're completing the trilogy of this one of a kind mix of action, adventure and strategy game genres. Once again you're off to a great journey through the Kessari Quadrant to unravel a deadly secret, stop the mysterious Eternal Ones, and save the whole universe from extermination. Commanding your fleet of space battleships you're going to explore the enormous universe and build colonies on newly discovered planets, use your diplomacy skills to negotiate alliances with more than 20 alien races, and (if that fails) you're going to enter the Hyper Melee Combat with a whole new "almost-3D" view.

The third part of the series was developed by a different studio than the originals, and brought many innovations, which unfortunately some of the hardcore fans of the saga weren't thrilled about. That's of course a matter of taste, but putting individual preferences aside, the game features a superior game engine, an expanded strategy-based colony management, and a new and improved Melee Combat mode among other updates. The game's epic story, refined gameplay, and plenitude of possibilities will keep the fans of the series, as well as newcomers, enraptured in front of their monitors for hours.

But we don't need to tell you that, just check it out for yourself! For just $5.99, it's an incredible bargain of gameplay and storytelling excellence!

arccos: SC3 is a game that, like Deus Ex 2, gets a bad rap for not living up to the expectations of its predecessor.
I actually enjoyed Invisible War; the way some things were simplified / streamlined was weird at first, but the game still offered freedom to complete objectives in multiple ways - this was always the main draw for me.

My best friend, whose opinion I respect a ton, played both the original and the sequel, and he said that the sequel was not nearly as bad as everyone says it is, and that it still kept a lot of the freedom of the first.

tfishell: there seems to be an "EA"-worthy lack of extras, which is a little disappointing (unless there's nothing really to give, extra-wise :P).

grviper: At least it's not the Manhole level of extras.
Does Manhole need a manuel to really get it? :) I haven't played, but you're right. That comes with NOTHING besides the game.

does get a really good review.
Yeah, well, Master of Orion 3 got a stellar review as well.
Not the best of the 3, but it completes the set. Still it is a good game, but it could not live up to the standards of the previous two.

Thank you, mysterious stranger!
This is a horrible game.
"Brought many innovations"... if you mean bad gameplay plus sock puppets, sure...
Might not be my kind of game, but I love how gog keeps bringing out new releases.

hunvagy: Actually I just remembered it was published by Legend. *raises signs* We want Companions of Xanth and Callahan's Crosstime Saloon!
It was developed by Legend and published by EA. Even republished as "EA Classics."
This one was not the best Legend's game but it was not too bad -- just did not measure to either Star Control or other Legend games standards. Now there is a hope that we will see some other Legend's gems. The only problem is that about half of them used external licenses, always a problem for publishers. Only one year ago I would say no way GOG will ever get those. Now, after Baldur's Gate, I am not so sure ;)
Haha, this neatly matches the situation with Master of Orion. The first two (good) games are in a pack together and the third (bad) game costs the same amount on it's own. Still, I hear this isn't MoO3 levels of bad, just disappointing.

Nope, sorry, the series ends with a cliffhangher in SC2. And they never made any sequels to Highlander. I wonder why not?
Hey GOG, you forgot to put the banner ads in the installer. It just says "temp header" ;-)
