Trapped in a frozen hell, you must investigate the cold darkness of the human psyche.

The story, the atmosphere, the graphics, and the sound of the great adventure horror game Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason will chill you to the bone for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

The North Wind, a nuclear ice-breaker stuck in the ice somewhere near the Arctic Circle, is a frozen coffin. What happened to the ship and its crew is beyond normal human cognition. You’re not alone and the North Wind is now plagued by dead crewmen who have undergone a strange metamorphosis due to the effects of the very cold climate. Using your mysterious ‘Mental Echo’ ability, you must dig deep in the chilling story of the ship and relive the final moments of its crew. The horrors contained in the Arctic cold will not let you bring the ship back to life without a fight.

Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason plays from the first person perspective for moving, shooting, and exploring the world, but don't mistake this for an FPS; the horror adventure part of the game shows itself clearly when it comes to building tension, unraveling frosty cold secrets, and using time travel in innovative ways. When you find corpses of crew members, you may be transported back in time due to the 'Mental Echo' of the terrible events that led to their death and then not only change the course of history and save the poor soul's life, but also change the present as well. The graphics make use of the PhysX engine by Nvidia and are stunning: there’s frost on the walls, ice melts into water, shadows lurk, lights flicker, and the overall cold and dark art design makes the trip through North Wind an alienating and chilling experience.

This is not your usual horror game--if you appreciate slow-burning suspense and terrific storytelling, playing Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason is like reading a great Sci-Fi novel for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

amok: IIRC it was part of the speculations over the hints which turned out to be Hitman and Thief.

OT - good game. Get it if you can.

I think they want to avoid a fiasco like Interstate 76. If that's the case, I'm ready to wait.
I am glad to see a newer game on here but I have to say if you have a ATI card watch out. I have a HD6450 512mb but the FPS is so slow it is unplayable for me......all settings turned down low, lowest resolution (I have the Gamersgate version), i even applied a patch Gamersgate provided.

Sadly, my notebook won't handle that. Waiting for Ignition!
chill out.. it's only 1 'new' game or 2 if you count Still Life 2 too. And it's not really that 'new' anyway, 2009. Last 1-2 year ago GOG also has released plenty of 2 - 3 years old games. It's too early to get melodramatic, not really the beginning of the end.

Ignition mentioned in a thread about Cryostasis' release?

Did GOG ever mention Ignition or why are you so excited (I know the game is one of the all time best racing games, though)?
It has been said that being old is not a requirement for GOG anymore.

As for this game... I tried the demo back when I played on an integrated Radeon HD3200. All lowest, bad performance. Tried it again when I got an HD6370, same performance. Also hear of bad performance on more powerful AMD cards, and even on some Nvidia cards.

If you use AMD, stay away from this.

kodeen: We've known for 4 months now that GOG was going to start stocking newer games.
the beginning of the end as in "no more GOOD old games", not "good new games".

it's been a while now, after the initial wave of Eidos classics, since GoG has received a true all-time classic. the EA lineup alone is still missing a tremendous number of games that should be a must-have for a site calling itself Good Old Games.

most of the other more recent GoG releases have been games already available everyhwere else (Steam, GamersGate, GetGames, Impulse, etc.). the last few weeks, GoG has mainly played catch-up with DotEmu...

GoG doesn't have access to source codes, as has been repeatedly stated by GoG staff. this automatically means that the extent to which GoG can adapt older games to newer systems is limited. see Thief and Thief 2 for example.

i wouldn't expect more than 32bit installer and maybe a core limitation to make it compatible with multicore CPUs.

i've tried it on a 4870 as well as a 5870 Vapor-X. doesn't even make much of a difference despite the massive difference in performance output. the game barely manages 20fps, and that's without the fancy PhysX effects.

I've heard good things about this game, but I have also heard that getting it to run correctly on certain setups is a feat in and of itself.
Wow, I'd never expect to see this game here on GOG.com and about 50% cheaper than on Steam. I'm truly amazed.
A good release that fits in with the rest of the games here. I won't buy it since I bought it on a Steam sale, unfortunately, since I haven't played it yet. My current Nvidia card doesn't support PhysX so I'm saving it for my next computer. If Steam evaporates some day, maybe I'll buy it here in a sale.

On GOG there is room for both older games and newer games. Both strategy and FPS (especially if those are original FPS games).
I don't understand why people complain so much, I think the moaning gets worse day by day, release for release. Almost whatever they do or release there is someone complaining about something. I doubt that the GOG team just sit on their asses all day, and they know that games like Theme Hospital and Sim City 4000 will get many sales. They have chosen to do it this way.
I too thought that there would come more Square Enix games after the announcement but I think that it is better to say "I wonder when we get some more Square Enix games!" than "WTF is this game. I've never heard of it, will never play it and i don't think anybody else will either."

If you are complaining that the game doesn't work very well with ATI\AMD video cards, you are doing a good thing since you are making the issue known. I think that GOG should still sell such games, BUT they should make it very clear at the game page so that everyone who considers buying the game will see it. Buying a game which has sub-par performance with your video card or a game that doesn't work at all will likely make the costumer angry, unless he\she is used to getting screwed over by other shops and expect nothing better here. Steam doesn't have a lot to lose witch such behavior since everyone knows that they do it on a regular basis but for GOG it is very different.
Nice, new release and a recent as well :) I heard a good things about this one, except the problems with Radeon graphic cards (which is stupid, really, good optimization for both, Raden and GeForce, should be in the best interest of developers). Maybe I will give it a try after finishing Amnesia.

Well, as a loyal ATI user, I guess this is one GOG (actually GNG) I won't be playing. One down, 300+ to go...

Smannesman: Disappointing release because it's been available everywhere for around $1 for ages now.
But it's still a good game.
avatar
timppu: Steam seems to sell it currently for 9.99€, GamersGate for 9.95€, both more than GOG's $9.99... If you are referring to some special sales and promos, obviously the GOG version will be sold on promos later. I don't understand why people keep comparing other sites' special promo prices to GOG default prices.
Yeah it is pretty stupid. A full-price game should be compared to a full-price game. Promos should be compared to promos.

There are others here who will enjoy this game immensely. But just because you don't like it, you are bitching about the end of the world. Really, get a grip on yourself people!
