Trapped in a frozen hell, you must investigate the cold darkness of the human psyche.

The story, the atmosphere, the graphics, and the sound of the great adventure horror game Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason will chill you to the bone for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

The North Wind, a nuclear ice-breaker stuck in the ice somewhere near the Arctic Circle, is a frozen coffin. What happened to the ship and its crew is beyond normal human cognition. You’re not alone and the North Wind is now plagued by dead crewmen who have undergone a strange metamorphosis due to the effects of the very cold climate. Using your mysterious ‘Mental Echo’ ability, you must dig deep in the chilling story of the ship and relive the final moments of its crew. The horrors contained in the Arctic cold will not let you bring the ship back to life without a fight.

Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason plays from the first person perspective for moving, shooting, and exploring the world, but don't mistake this for an FPS; the horror adventure part of the game shows itself clearly when it comes to building tension, unraveling frosty cold secrets, and using time travel in innovative ways. When you find corpses of crew members, you may be transported back in time due to the 'Mental Echo' of the terrible events that led to their death and then not only change the course of history and save the poor soul's life, but also change the present as well. The graphics make use of the PhysX engine by Nvidia and are stunning: there’s frost on the walls, ice melts into water, shadows lurk, lights flicker, and the overall cold and dark art design makes the trip through North Wind an alienating and chilling experience.

This is not your usual horror game--if you appreciate slow-burning suspense and terrific storytelling, playing Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason is like reading a great Sci-Fi novel for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

kalirion: Ah yes, this is the game that had my 8800GT 512MB chugging on MEDIUM settings at 1080p.
That's roughly equivalent to my Radeon HD 5670 but I'll be running at 1280x1024 so maybe that will help a little. Fortunately, there is a demo available I just downloaded so I can give it a test drive. I'm planning to upgrade to a Radeon 6850 soon so maybe it will need to wait till then.

In any case, a horror themed fps game looks great to me. Cool setting, no pun intended.
this game has awesome atmosphere (the start of the game with the dogs in a snowstorm, the constant freezing, saving the sailors...), and even though it looks mostly like a FPS/beat em upper with a scary moments, it does it's job very well... I already bought it way back.

mrtophat101: Would you recommend this to someone who loved Amnesia and Penumbra?
It looks interesting.

ShreddingDragon: Easily, easily. I loved all these games, and Cryostasis has one heck of an atmosphere too. The story is awesome, and the European take on general style and conversation directing feels fresh, like in STALKERs.

Technically Cryostasis is quite clunky like others have said, but it didn't stop it from being a great game altogether.
Thanks!
the game is already available pretty much everywhere, and has been discounted to $2 countless times. if i wanted it, i'd already have bought it long ago.

the truth is that if you have an ATI/AMD GPU, you can straight forget about this game. it uses GPU-based PhysX acceleration for all its water effects. you can disable most of the effects but 1) the game will still be slow as hell and 2) you'd remove the very thing that makes this game unique.

basically, the developer screwed over everyone who doesn't have an NVidia graphics card. i won't be buying this. ever.

You mean ... Aside from creative storytelling and great atmosphere?
We've been busy as one-armed paper hangers getting ready for a seekrit big thing this month. As a result, some of the finer points of planning out our releases have been difficult. While we're still treating all of our games with the TLC they deserve before release--like Cryostasis!--they have been arriving a little bit "catch as catch can."

What is our sooper seekrit this month? Wait and see!

And seriously, check out Cryostasis. It's not quite as face-meltingly terrifying as Amnesia--I game I have still yet to psych myself up to finishing--but the tightly-written story and interesting gameplay mechanics make for a great experience.
Good release, one of the reason i'm here. Not really my cup of tea but still a good game. The price seems little bit cheaper compared to other places.

yeah well, you can get that elsewhere as well. Cryostasis is literally built around the interaction with water, ice and heat. the entire gameplay is dependent on these 3 factors. since the environmental physics are PhysX-based, non-NVidia users can only either live with an almost unplayable performance, or disable the very effects that define the game, it's atmopshere as well as its gameplay.

don't get me wrong: from what i've heard and seen firsthand, Cryostasis is a good game with an excellent atmosphere and a very unique mechanic involving water, cold and heat. i've given this game several chances over the years, with different hardware. it just isn't playable on ATI GPUs in any decent way. this made me angry enough never to buy it on principle.

A secret you say? Hmmm...
My interest just peeked!

How are you going to treat the newer games with DLC, when they get old, in terms of pricing? It's a bit unfair if the game costs $9.99 and then DLC for $9.99 (modern price) too :(

Lol, I think that one was 50 euro + on EA's sale recently, you won't be seeing that here any time soon I'd imagine unless they sell all parts separately.

Probably something underwhelming. At this point even if it was signing on Lucas Arts, it wouldn't feel like a big deal as we'd probably get a few games available everywhere else and then be drip fed the rest over a long period. At this point I'd be more excited at an announcement that you were going to be releasing more than 2 games a week.
