Trapped in a frozen hell, you must investigate the cold darkness of the human psyche.

The story, the atmosphere, the graphics, and the sound of the great adventure horror game Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason will chill you to the bone for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

The North Wind, a nuclear ice-breaker stuck in the ice somewhere near the Arctic Circle, is a frozen coffin. What happened to the ship and its crew is beyond normal human cognition. You’re not alone and the North Wind is now plagued by dead crewmen who have undergone a strange metamorphosis due to the effects of the very cold climate. Using your mysterious ‘Mental Echo’ ability, you must dig deep in the chilling story of the ship and relive the final moments of its crew. The horrors contained in the Arctic cold will not let you bring the ship back to life without a fight.

Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason plays from the first person perspective for moving, shooting, and exploring the world, but don't mistake this for an FPS; the horror adventure part of the game shows itself clearly when it comes to building tension, unraveling frosty cold secrets, and using time travel in innovative ways. When you find corpses of crew members, you may be transported back in time due to the 'Mental Echo' of the terrible events that led to their death and then not only change the course of history and save the poor soul's life, but also change the present as well. The graphics make use of the PhysX engine by Nvidia and are stunning: there’s frost on the walls, ice melts into water, shadows lurk, lights flicker, and the overall cold and dark art design makes the trip through North Wind an alienating and chilling experience.

This is not your usual horror game--if you appreciate slow-burning suspense and terrific storytelling, playing Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason is like reading a great Sci-Fi novel for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

Jakov: I have read in the comments many issues with AMD/ATI cards.

I have AMD 6950 with 2 GB of memory which I use for newer games on Win7. Can its raw strength push this game all the way on 1080p resolution..?

or would my older nVidia 8800GT with 512 MB of memory that I use for older games on WinXP SP3 be a better choice for this game? Usually games newer then 2008 does not work very well on 1080p resolution with this card.

Tormentfan: No, strangely enough it seems that the more powerful ATI card you have the worse it runs.. but it never runs very well regardless of your card... Your Nvidea might do better.
Than that is really a broken game..thank you for your reply. If it goes for a big sale I may give it a try..

Ah ok, I was just taking his word for it.
it seems everybody is talking about ati/amd cards giving it problems, but I have an nvidia card (gtx460) and it still runs like crap for me
I'm gonna try the demo again

I am downloading the demo at the moment..I will post how it works on my machines during this evening. Since you have a much better nVidia card I would like to know how it works on your PC.

Fred_DM: PhysX is simply a horrible way to calculate physics in a game...
I'm not disagreeing. But I'm unaware of a good way - and clearly are a great many developers. The most widely used is Havok after all.

Navagon: This game is amazing. I don't know about it being up there with Stalker as it's hard to compare those two anyway. This one's much more story driven and linear as a result. But it's comparible to Metro 2033 and I'd go as far as to say it's the better of the two.

Highly recommended... if you can run it. It's not called Cryostasis for nothing.
Ha ha, yes the technology is too advanced for my machine, I will definitely play it when I buy a new one, though. Stalker and Metro 2033 what was i thought of as comparison too, for setting and atmosphere.

If your Nvidia card doesn't support PhysX you should wait some years until you buy a new machine (or video card).

Totally different in terms of gameplay though. Metro 2033 does take a step away from the super soldier style combat by giving you some fairly shoddy (but immensely cool all the same) guns. In Cryostasis you really do need to aim properly. You can't run and gun and expect everything to fall over dead before you. It can be a real challenge to take something down with a rifle before it's in too close for the rifle to be any good.

That's cool. I find that realism is almost always a good thing for me. It makes it more immersive.

It certainly does, yeah. It succeeds in making the encounters really quite desperate without taking away your ability to fight back entirely, like Amnesia does. In fact you get quite a few guns in the game. Just don't expect them to make the enemy feel like they're just fodder.

One of the best things about it though is the way the story is delivered. Probably the best job I've seen done on telling a story in an FPS (not that it has a wealth of competition, admittedly, but it's an achievement to have HL2 beat in that regard).

I just tried the demo again and it runs a lot better than it did before, so maybe it had something to do with my drivers last time ( I tried the demo a few months ago when it was on sale at amazon for $2.50). I remember that it ran so poorly that I didn't even want to bother buying the game for $2.50 because it was pretty much unplayable.

Now with my second time running it, it's significantly better ( unlike the demo I wouldn't consider it totally unplayable) but it's still not great. With resolution of 1280x720 I get at 30 fps the majority of the time but there's some pretty heavy stuttering at parts. Also my game crashed once and I got some "couldn't upload texture" message. So I'm only going to buy this if it's really cheap

Awesome name for a video game. Never heard of this, but it looks and sounds very cool. Wishlisted and will buy when I can.

Thank you for your post. My test with the demo is the following:

Game works on both of my machines on 1080p. However my nVidia card does not support Shaders 4.0 and therefore it cannot show the advanced physics, unlike my ATI 6950 2GB which can apply these settings.

On the same settings (Shader 3.0, no advance Physics, everything else on high and on including AA & AF) the game is faster on the ATI card. Game is a bit slow but playable on both systems with these settings.

However, if I add Shader 4.0 and advanced Physics to ATI card game looks better, but it takes so severe frame rate hit that I have never had in any game with this card. It is very difficult to play when you are attacked.

Demo of the game did not crush on any of my machines..yet.

From playing perspective I like what I have seen and think it is worth playing on Shader 3.0 systems.

While this is newer than I'd like for a GOG-game, it _is_ a pretty spectacular game that most people probably haven't even heard of. It is one of the most memorable games I've played in recent years, and it has one of the best game endings ever in my opinion.

Sometimes it's a little rough around the edges, but really. If you liked stuff like Metro 2033 this is definitely a game to get.
