Trapped in a frozen hell, you must investigate the cold darkness of the human psyche.

The story, the atmosphere, the graphics, and the sound of the great adventure horror game Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason will chill you to the bone for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

The North Wind, a nuclear ice-breaker stuck in the ice somewhere near the Arctic Circle, is a frozen coffin. What happened to the ship and its crew is beyond normal human cognition. You’re not alone and the North Wind is now plagued by dead crewmen who have undergone a strange metamorphosis due to the effects of the very cold climate. Using your mysterious ‘Mental Echo’ ability, you must dig deep in the chilling story of the ship and relive the final moments of its crew. The horrors contained in the Arctic cold will not let you bring the ship back to life without a fight.

Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason plays from the first person perspective for moving, shooting, and exploring the world, but don't mistake this for an FPS; the horror adventure part of the game shows itself clearly when it comes to building tension, unraveling frosty cold secrets, and using time travel in innovative ways. When you find corpses of crew members, you may be transported back in time due to the 'Mental Echo' of the terrible events that led to their death and then not only change the course of history and save the poor soul's life, but also change the present as well. The graphics make use of the PhysX engine by Nvidia and are stunning: there’s frost on the walls, ice melts into water, shadows lurk, lights flicker, and the overall cold and dark art design makes the trip through North Wind an alienating and chilling experience.

This is not your usual horror game--if you appreciate slow-burning suspense and terrific storytelling, playing Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason is like reading a great Sci-Fi novel for only $9.99 on GOG.com.
I remember playing a demo of this a few years ago. It was very tense as I only had an old bolt action rifle that loaded extremely slow to defend myself against some creature. Also when leaving the confines of the ship I could only stay outside for a limited time before the cold started to take away my health.

A good release to be sure. I look forward to seeing this "seekrit" revealed by months end.

Fenixp: Yeah. I think it has been pretty much confirmed that GoG is going to release newer or even new games.
I think they will make a huge event when they start releasing new-new games.

keeveek: ...and anachronox?
avatar
bansama: Very unlikely that one will get released as the last set of Nvidia drivers it worked with were 258.96. All subsequent drivers had the option which is required to run Anachronox removed. So unless someone solves that issue, don't hold your breath.

Still nice to see Cryostatis available from yet another source. I won't be buying it though as I already own an retail copy as well as a copy on GamersGate (as that one was compatible with the Physx patch, while my retail copy was not).
but they announced anachronox when they announced Square Enix, didn't they?

Great release. It can be unforgiving at times and is a real system hog, but it's worth a look nevertheless.

ovoon: How have I not heard of this?!
It came out around the same time as Penumbra: Black Plague. That's how I found out about it.

I just checked. Black Plauge was actually released in Feb, 08 and Cryostasis came out in Dec,08. I remember finding them together somewhere. That's how I was turned onto Amnesia later.

Yeah, think I confused 2 with 1, although given their pricing on that I don't think pricing for this one will fall anywhere near 9.99 probably.

I don't think so. Do you have a source attributable to GOG to that affect? Or was it just speculation from others?

IIRC it was part of the speculations over the hints which turned out to be Hitman and Thief.

OT - good game. Get it if you can.

One of the teaser images announced a "cyberpunk sleuth" and was most likely referring to Anachronox.

The other three games hinted at in those images definitely were Thief, Deus Ex and Hitman. Only the sleuth is still missing.

TheEnigmaticT: We've been busy as one-armed paper hangers getting ready for a seekrit big thing this month. As a result, some of the finer points of planning out our releases have been difficult. While we're still treating all of our games with the TLC they deserve before release--like Cryostasis!--they have been arriving a little bit "catch as catch can."

What is our sooper seekrit this month? Wait and see!

And seriously, check out Cryostasis. It's not quite as face-meltingly terrifying as Amnesia--I game I have still yet to psych myself up to finishing--but the tightly-written story and interesting gameplay mechanics make for a great experience.
I wonder if this secret is related to newer games or an improvement in the site. Oh, well, you teased about "March 27th" in other thread I think, so two weeks to know.

bazilisek: Snip
Interesting. But unless they fix the issue that prevents it working with Nvidia cards using current drivers, I really don't see it going on sale even if the have the rights to sell it. GOG have, IIRC, refused to sell games in the past because they couldn't get them working on current systems.

Kadlin: The game is already sold DRM free elsewhere. The extras aren't really all that good to me. I like extras that are cluebooks and maps and such. Extras like wallpaper, avatars, and pictures you can find nearly anywhere or make your own. The manual is already included with the game, don't act like it's a bonus.
Sorry...
not really old game
low rated
Meh all over.

Is this the beginning of the end?

We've known for 4 months now that GOG was going to start stocking newer games.
