The long-awaited final Atari-Hasbro release is here! Most of you have probably figured this out by now, but that release is only the best RPG of all time - Baldur's Gate 2!

The Complete edition contains the original Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn and its expansion pack: Throne of Baal. It's hard to compare this game to any other, since it's usually other games that are compared to Baldur's Gate 2. You've got complex character creation and development, plus mechanics based upon the 2nd Edition Dungeons and Dragons ruleset. The in-game world is just huge and lets you visit countless locations in Faerûn, including the mysterious Underdark. The story is just enthralling and spans upwards of 200 hours of gameplay. Finally, one of the most interesting features is that your party just feels alive. Its members aren't there just for the damage, tanking or healing, but are in fact complex characters with their own motives, likes, dislikes and sometimes even love interests... You will often laugh at their quips and jeers, or find yourself defusing a potential conflict. Overall, an RPG masterpiece of legendary proportions.
Finally!!! I can buy this game and then totally not play a single second of it for a year and half because I've got a gajillion other GOG games to play first!
The writing on this blurb is JUST great!

kalirion: You know what you have to do - use SQL Injection to take over their database and fix the bug :)
Now that you mention it, there's an obligatory XKCD

As a joke, I sent to our vertical app vendor, saying, "I'd do this to my database, but I'm afraid to test it." Oddly, I heard *nothing*. At the very least, I usually got a 'thank you' or 'we already fixed that'

2 years later, they announced it as a fix recommended by an anonymous user. Go figure.
So, it would be nice to see Microprose's Magic: the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers here as well... The IP owners should be Atari or Wizard of the Coast, so it should be doable...

Dragobr: They are freeware, but still licensed, so they would still have to make an agreement with bethesda.

In the end, it's just as hard as getting Morrowind.
I could actually see it as a stipulation from Bethesda. 'You can sell Oblivion and Morrowind, but you have to freely provide Arena and Daggerfall.' Or GoG could offer to host it, as it can get more people familiar with their service. I admit to having an account here due to BaSS - then I lurked for a while. Later it led to my first purchase, one of the promos. After that, it has been about picking up one awesome new release every two months and the occasional promo - I gotta pay the bills somehow!

I do say, the more moddable a title is, the more likely I am to pick it up. Not sure why. Sure wish there was a way to host or link to popular (broken out by mature/stable and new/testing) mods from the game pages or something.
Now this is definitely going to be an interesting week. If I'm not mistaken, it is somewhat odd for GoG to release a game on Monday. Makes me wonder, if Baldur's Gate 2 was released today, what might actually come tomorrow? Dare I say System Shock 2 or Deus Ex? O_O Maybe just wishful thinking. Totally made my week though. Thanks!
I feel the love.

I think the MtG (1998?) was released after Microprose (and maybe even Wizards) was owned by Hasbro. Seriously doubt they'd transfer the rights to Infogrammes (later Atari). GoG will likely have to get a license from Hasbro. That is, if Hasbro will speak to them after going against their wishes and releasing computer games that aren't 4th ed D&D (aka D&D WoW-ified).

So for those keeping score:
* D&D 4th Ed - WoW-ified, plus a lot of the cool places written about in 3rd ed are just plain gone. Overall, it has a darker, more gritty feel, and it seems as if they are transforming Faerun into the world of Darksun. - Just an opinion. Greyhawk is totally axed, too. I've heard the SteamPunk world of Eberron will be the settings for later rules (4 1/4 or 5/4 rules?) - but that's just a rumor.
* 3rd Ed lives on with the OGL. Pathfinder is the unofficial D&D 3.75 rules release. Obviously Forgotten Realms, Ebberon, Greyhawk, et al. won't be mentioned.
* 2nd Ed - mostly dead, as the people that played it are probably too busy working to play anymore. I liked the Gold Box Games. Too bad UbiSoft won't be releasing these anytime soon.
* 1st Ed (Chainmail? 1975?) People still playing this are doing it in nursing homes (just kidding!). I heard 2nd Ed was much better, but what do I know. No deities? How do you get to be a Cleric? Hmm, maybe they were Atheist Clerics?

If I read GOG's earlier announcement correctly, released D&D based games are here with the blessing of Hasbro so further deals with them are entirely plausible. However, as ATARI currently holds the exlusive license to produce and distribute (A)D&D and other Hasbro franchise games it's somewhat doubtfull that games based on those franchises not exclusevly owned either Hasbro or ATARI come here until ATARI's license expires. After that it's all in the hands of Hasbro.
GOG.com Revives Classic Hasbro-Licensed PC Games

We're leaving the beta with a new site, new features and some of the best games of all time from Hasbro and Atari.

GOG is commemorating the 2nd anniversary with a new site, brand new features and the massive announcement of a deal with Hasbro to breathe new life into some of the most desired titles in PC gaming history, including BioWare’s role-playing opus, Baldur’s Gate: The Original Saga. The titles from Hasbro will be unveiled gradually in the coming weeks, and today's announcement is just a small taste of what’s to come.

Where on earth did you get the idea that 1st edition Advanced D&D, which came out in 1977, didn't have deities? I'm under 40 and I played 1st Edition, deities definitely existed in the game.
Kudos guys for bring this to GOG , I already have all the Original Boxed sets , but for people who have always wanted to play these masterpieces of game design its just great !!

I think he talk about the basic D&D (before AD&D) where you dont have dieties in the rule book (and where dwarf or elf are class huhu).

Great to see all the great RPG of an era here on gog!
