In the scientific method, an experiment is an empirical method that arbitrates between competing models or hypotheses. Experimentation is also used to test existing theories or new hypotheses in order to support them or disprove them.
Take a look at the steps of the scientific method:
1. Make observations.
2. Formulate a hypothesis.
3. Design and conduct an experiment to test the hypothesis.
4. Evaluate the results and accept or reject the hypothesis.

STEP 1: Observations
#1 People who play computer games like games. This is mostly true, however some gamers who played these titles might disagree.
#2 People who buy computer games prefer spending less money to spending more money.
It hurts us a little bit, but the truth is games don't sell for $1000+
#3 GOG.com users are people who play, like, and buy computer games.

STEP 2: Hypothesis
If GOG.com lowers the prices of some games in our catalog, more gamers will be inclined to buy and enjoy those high-quality products.

STEP 3: The Experiment
We're trying out some new pricing, and we want to see what you guys think of it.

Prices changed from $5.99 to $3.99:
Alien Shooter, Celtic Kings, Commandos Ammo Pack, Constructor, Empire Earth, Knights and Merchants, Litil Divil, Lords of Magic, Lords of the Realm, Mobile Forces, Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Outcast, Personal Nightmare, Realms of Haunting, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Simon the Sorcerer, Waxworks.

Prices changed from $9.99 to $6.99:
Broken Sword 4: The Angel of Death, Ceville, Evil Genius, Haegemonia Gold Edition, King's Bounty, Moto Racer 3, Red Baron Pack, Restaurant Empire, Sanitarium, Shadowgrounds, Sherlock Holmes, The Incredible Machines, Warlords Battlecry 3

STEP 4: Results
This is where you, our dear gamers, step in and decide the results. We'd like to offer you the best games in history on PC & Mac for the most affordable prices, but we need to fund testing, coding, bundling, and securing rights to even more classics. So we want to see if this brings us and our partners more money overall, even though there's less per individual sale. That's the argument we'd like to make, but we'll see what the results from you guys actually are as we try out our new price points.
Also, I'd definitely appreciate some more very old games being reduced to $4 if you find that this experiment works. The Zork games, for example.

I would like to see some old games or indie titles that are just being released here, to start from 4 dollars pricepoint :-)
If The Witcher 2 was on sale, that would have been amazing. Anyway, good luck with the price drops. Most of these games I either already own or don't really have an interest in.

EDIT: Holy crap, when did The Witcher 2 go on sale for only $9.99???

I am completely for this experiment, but I have a question for TheEnigmaticT, or other members of GOG Staff. What is the duration of said experiment? I am personally wanting to buy Haegemonia, King's Bounty, RCT, Lords of Magic and a few others, but I am out of money until my next payday, possibly the one after that... Any way I can know for sure that these prices will be the same as they are today on say, the 8th or 9th of next month?

Mmmh, need to check which special sales got another run. So far I only remember the gem sales, which got also expanded. Are there another new experiments in the pipe? Yes, I'm inquisitive.
The study won't work correctly as not all titles of the same price are lowered. This produces a bias in the results so your conclusion to the study will not be accurate.
I'd be buying some of these games, only I currently have an enormous backlog, having discovered how good value GOG's games are anyway fairly recently. I'll almost certainly get them in the future, though.

Of course, that may indicate that they're cheap enough anyway!
More pricing choices are better. Wonder if a publisher would look at $6.99 and want to try that instead of just going with $5.99...

However, Evil Genius for $6.99? NICE!

tinyE: Is GOG hurting? When i worked for B&N they tried tried something simlilar with pricing and called it an "experiment". What they wanted to actually call it was "Amazon is kicking the shit out of us." Shit I hope not, I love it here.

TheEnigmaticT: No, we're not hurting. This is an actual experiment. For the last 6 months or so, we've been trying a variety of different sales to see what works and what doesn't--things like our "Pay what you want" packages or the "Pick 5, Pay $10" sale as well as the "End of the World" promo. I come from the web development background, where the mantra is "Fail early, fail often" because that's how you learn.

So we're learning. :)
Sorry, I'm just being paranoid. I just really dig it here and it seems whenever I find something new that I really take to, it is either taken away or rejects me. Remember the new "V". I loved that show! I waited all week just to see the next episode. When it came on I made popcorn, took the phone off the hook, pull the shades.

They canceled it.

Oh, now I understand what this experiment is about. Outcast, Myst and RCT are all selling better than System Shock 2, and since SHODAN is slowly creeping up on them, they needed a way to make them sell better. But they couldn't justify a "Let's do a sale on our top selling titles", so they invented this price drop instead.

Yeap, that's obviously it...
I was gonna go "I already bought too many games, I shouldn't buy anymore for now" but you know what? Screw it. I buy 3 or 4 times the number of games I play each year and by now I should have already made peace with the fact the a good deal of the satisfaction I get from games is owning them and that I'll probably never get to play them all. Long story short, GOG is awesome and I'm frigging buying stuff now.
Critique of your assumptions:

Subjects who like games may have already bought all the games they were interested in. Such stimuli will be ineffective until there are more games of interest available (specifically tycoon and grand strategy).
