I realize I've been making a lot of these sorts of threads, but I'm always curious to hear what sort of opinions other people hold about "best game for such and such"

Anyway, what is the most downright disturbing game you have ever played? One that really got under your skin and unsettled you.

For me, there's no question: Condemned: Criminal Origins. I've played horror classics like Resident Evil, System Shock II, Penumbra, etc (no Silent Hill, I'm afraid. I've yet to own a PS of any number)... but I have yet to play another game that so completely disturbed me. There's just something about the queasy atmosphere of brutal violence and the game's penchant for horrifically twisted concepts. It's not the most frightening game I've ever played, per se (that would be Amnesia), but it's certainly the one that effected me the most after I finished it.

So... how about you?
I think there was already a thread about this very thing.

Oh, not quite the same. It was a 'Most Disgusting thing', but it tended to be about games that disturbed people.
Here.

I see.
Yeah.... as a matter of fact I made that thread.
I dunno... I'd say Condemned too but the disturbing factor of the plot quickly descended into utter nonsense and hilarity after the Mall level (which was also disturbing in itself, but hard to be taken seriously).

I can't say any game has really made me sick with nausea, but I've been scared many times before...

-edit- Wait, just recalled Downfall. There's just something wrong with this game. Sure it's also overboard with the gore factor, but I think the art style and music made me cringe more than once, in a good way. (check out my review there)

Penumbra probably. At any rate if "scary" counts as disturbing.
Both Bioshock and Amnesia: The Dark Descent disturbed me, but for different reasons. Bioshock disturbed because it was just... disturbing. I didn't find it scary, but the grotesque figures of the Splicers, the things they said, and the back story all got to me in a way I just can't explain very well.

Amnesia was frightening, horrifying, and holy-crap-I-almost-crapped-my-pants scary. But the (SLIGHT SPOILERS) second half was just... I can't even describe it. The descriptions of the torture, Alexander's little essay (or whatever you want to call it) on the art and purpose of torture, and that whole "Paint the lines..." thing just unsettled me in a way that the game's horror and terror just can't hold a stick to (END SLIGHT SPOILERS). Seriously, I remember laying in bed after I finished the game and I was disturbed beyond description. And I still think that that game was one of the most incredible gaming experiences I've ever had.

What is wrong with me?

Is that the recent PS3 release? If so, dear god that was fucking insane.

Same here, I actually can't play it because it sets off my claustrophobia. Never had another game do it but this one does every time
I haven't played it yet, but I bought it last June. It's the only game that's truly unsettled me.

Fallout man. And it's not juss because I'm Canadian either.
amnesia is the only game that makes me genuinely afraid to continue playing
Amnesia.

I lasted like 3 minutes.
