Crispy78: OK, I just checked the exchange rate and unless I got it badly wrong, that's just over £300.

Erm...

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa!

If you want anything that's going to play a modern title at all well you're going to need to double, if not triple, your budget. Unless by some mirace laptops are dirt cheap in Brazil - and if you can get a gaming laptop for that sort of money, sod it, I'll buy two and you can keep one if you'll post me the other... :)
Taxes here are ridiculous and I don't want a ALienware I want something to play my goddamn games.
And was it necessary to act like a jerk to me?

it would be interesting, but maybe a tad small. not in Brazil though. The GFX is similar to a 660M, and the CPU is AMAZING if you need to do encoding and stuff.
Here's a good list.

I would skip anything lower than Mid-range starting with AMD Radeon HD 8730M and go up in case you can afford it.

Gaby1's suggestion looks like a good deal.

Sorry, but you just won't be able to play most modern games on a £300 laptop. Certainly in this country you struggle to find any laptop worth buying for that sort of price, let alone one that won't have a heart attack when you fire up a game.

The GT555M in my 4-year old rig is only three spots below the 8730, so I should feel pretty good about that. : ) And really, this older laptop does a very nice job with the games I throw at it.

That kinda goes in with what Crispy78 was saying: that amount of money is going to be a tough stretch to reach the "most modern games" goal. Not sure what the used laptop market is like in Brazil, but the OP might want to take a look there, too.

I know next to nothing of mobile GPUs actually but this discussion becomes an issue when one talks broadly about "maxed out graphics", modern games can mean indie games for all we know and no stated preference for framerates. Just curious, what kind of games, what settings and what framerates have you been getting out of your GT555M?

HereForTheBeer: What are your requirements:

- what is "affordable"? $500? $2,000?
- screen size
- resolution
- what games do you plan to play?
- is battery life a concern?
- how much does portability matter? (no, this is not a stupid question in a laptop thread)
- does it need to look like a plain-jane laptop (for business situations) or can you go with something like an Asus ROG?
- need a NumPad?
- optical drive necessary?
- what else will you be doing on this PC?

Go second hand PC with Win7 Prof. If your spending around $1500 you'll be able to get amazing quality. Seriously, refurbished PCs are the way to go now.

EDIT: Oops! My apologies I see you're spending in Brazilian Reals. In that case you've still got a respectable budget of around US$450 - US$500 (if I recall the exchange rate correctly) in which case you can still buy everything you'll need in a 2nd hand computer. Enjoy :-)

Yeah, maxed-out ain't happenin' for me on today's AAA action stuff. And really, I don't need the flashy graphics anyway so much as a particular title gets its point across with smooth gameplay.

To answer the question, Tower of Guns has it running pretty warm but smooth and it'll handle the Stalker games at 1920x1080 with no problem. Also Mount and Blade: Warband. As for framerates, I'm not sure - I don't usually check that if the game runs smoothly. So whatever framerate equates to gameplay that works, that's what it will do. That's what, 30 fps or better? I turn off AA, usually turn down shadows and grass detail, and leave the draw distance high; generally, medium to high quality overall. Sorry for the iffy answer on that one.

For an older GPU, I'm satisfied with what it can handle, and it's a good match for the catalog here. If trying something newer like, I dunno, the Batman games then I imagine it would have to be dropped down to a lower res to make them playable. I bet something like this rig could be found used on that budget.
I have recently aquired an Asus G751JY. So far I'm extremely happy with it.
MSI has some great gaming laptops, too ... and of good value if you don`t buy the "top model".
Your comp should at least get a 860m or higher or 960m or higher for decent (medium) gaming, 8GB Ram, no SSD because its cheaper and quite easy to buy one and put it in yourself without loosing warranty. I for myself own a GS70 and am very happy with it. Don`t go with a laptop with tooo low GPU power.
Btw with those you get FHD and playing without antialiasing in FHD probably is comparable with it in lower resolutions ;)

GP Series: budget and maybe too low GPU
GE Series: very nice looking medium range, probably best for alue
GS Series: ultramobile, alu chassis, no dvd
GT Series: Hardcore Gaming, bulky and expensive

Check the budget, dude. 1500 Brazilian Real = about 435 Euros. In a notoriously expensive market.

Looking on the Acer website (purely because it was the first one I found with a Brazilian store), 1500R$ doesn't quite get you a Celeron with 4GB RAM and integrated graphics:

Did think it was US$ first, but with this low budget one would not get a "gaming laptop" as you already stated.
A cheap one that will play most older GoG titles, but definitely no modern FPS in any good quality or even Witcher 3 or the like ;)
So I take it you didn't mean $1500 as in dollars. Well, as everyone else has said, that puts you in a difficult position.

Look at this:

Battlefield 4 gameplay with intel i3 and GeForce 710M, I think this is a bare minimum if you want to play modern games; of course forget about utra settings and stuff like that, but at least you will be able to play them.

I think you might find a new laptop with these specs for about $500(dollars), but if you want cheaper than that, you'll probably need to look for a used laptop.

With Geforce GTX 980M? Show-off! :D

I'm looking forward to buy that at some point, as far as i could tell it should exceed e.g. The Witcher 3 recommended requirements quite nicely.

But I'm not in a hurry to upgrade. For now I'm playing on ASUS G75VW (Geforce GTX 670M). I'm still quite happy with its performance. Admittedly I haven't extensively played all the latest and greatest games on it, and I am not expecting it to run The Witcher 3 even passably. Then again, I've been quite often positively surprised how well it runs even new AAA games.

Well, I used a G73 until now, but the 460mGTX in it won't run The Witcher 3 passably... It even struggles with Wasteland 2 on Ultra settings. So it was time for an upgrade + I got a good deal on it...
