I made a uPlay account so I could say my first and last piece in that forum.
Man, making that account made me feel dirty, as I oppose uPlay with a passion. Maybe I'm just being a baby about it, but I need a strong drink after that.

For the revolution.

i think they are getting know that people are just making accounts to bash in steam and demand gog releases. i would have posted in for gog but the threads look hostile. Maybe we should nominate a few proper users as gog ambassadors to represent gog rather than everyone signing up to fight in there.

From what i have seen both tfishell and barry seem to have the cool and calm approach in requesting such things, maybe they should directly contact the devs and companies.
I will not promote GOG somewhere else, only if I'm already quite active there for other reasons and there is a general discussion about digital services. Only then I may say my opinion about GOG and DRM and I will mark it clearly as opinion. I will not be the idiot that spends his time making marketing for GOG and they GOG maybe betrays me by introducing regional prices or something else... PR for GOG is mostly GOGs task.

Anyway GOG for me is the only place (except old style physical discs) where I have some feeling of ownership left, in the sense that nobody controls me. On can surely say that.

which is funny, (and a track I am on right now.... sorry....) is that this is supposed to be DRM Free mini-revolutions, but it for some reason mostly turn into gOg mini-revolutions. If it was truly a battle for DRM free, those poster should try to convince the publishers to get the games DRM free on Gamers Gate, Desura, Steam, Origin, Big Fish, WildTangent, Green Man Gaming, etc... but it tends to turn into fan service for gOg.

edit - anyway, it was just an observation. I am not going to hijack and derail this thread, so I will leave it.

There is a correlation between GOG and DRM-free. GOG is mostly the only place where you can get games DRM free. Steam is just a hopeless case. Investing energy to convince Steam to go DRM free is probably quite wasted as Steam has proven in the past while investing energy to convince publishers to join GOG is (if successful) probably directly resulting in more DRM-free games available. However I agree that the general notion should be to obtain the games DRM free on more than only one service (if possible, although one is the absolute minimum).

Didn't quote amok because he wanted to leave anyway.

One thing before you are leaving:
GOG is the only site in the web that sells DRM-free only. There is no single DRM game on GOG and guess why GOG is using "Join the DRM-free revolution" as their slogan...

since you replied... that's fine, but if gOg really wanted to join the revolution, they would have been celebrating all the games becoming DRM free via Humble, or Half Life 2 becoming DRM free on Steam and so on. gOg's DRM free revolution seems to be limited to gOg only... so not much of a revolution? Don't get me wrong, I am for game preservation, and for that purpose DRM free is much better than DRMd - but gOg's slogan so far has been nothing but marketing gimmick, that 'revolution' have gone only so far and not further. It have worked quite well also, though, as evident by thread like this. gOg tells you to join the revolution, but they are not really joining any themselves - as long as it is not something they can flog... If you truly wanted a revolution, should you not take the fight to those who are not 100% convinced yet?

I guess I am jut in a bit depressed mood lately, sorry. I'l leave you to it.

Messi_is_Messiah: Ha, I just created an account to add my 2 cents to that 2k thread. Some guy was trying to say steam offered all the same stuff as gog, no one ever countered it, and it lit a fire inside me.

amok: cant we just get passed all this "own" and "license" nonsense though? You are wrong in that thread, buying a game on gOg also just gives you a license to play the game - same as on Steam. DRM free games delivered via Steam do not need re-authentication, just move the game folder out of the Steam folder (or even delete Steam after you downloaded the game...). You can also back up the DRM free Steam games by zipping and moving the game folder.

The only thing you are right about in that post, is that gOg have a 30 day money back guarantee, while Steam don't.
I´ve just discovered a real letdown in my own argumentation: I´ve been criticising users that won´t gonna buy Ubisoft-Titles on GOG.com as Ubisoft is such a huge DRM-follower in general. My counter argument was that you´ll have to support the ones that are doing what you want to be done. How should a company know that you support his new buisiness line if you don´t reward it for doing so?

But my own argumentation to not buy a game that uses the Steam-Client only for delivering the game and not for DRM is based on the same core argument: That it would be bad if you´d give money to one of DRMs key actors!

This cannot hold up, as this is an unusable argument, as I´ve proven earlier! Only way to slip out is that I don´t wanna support forced client apps! oh, I found another one: Steam can change their terms of use just like they want, at any time in any ways! You shouldn´t support this:

But yes, I´ve got to correct: DRM-free games delivered via Steam are still DRM-free games.

GOG is the only one going 100% DRM free for every game, so they are the only store that clearly supports DRM-free. That´s why they proberbly wouldn´t think of anyone else as beeing part of it right now! This might explain some of the stuff...
To the rest of it: Hope your depression won´t last forever!
But also hoping that this is an end to the discussion. This discussion takes to much space in this thread...

Just a bit further down the thread by a seasoned veteran member of Paradoxplaza:
"This is an odd joke; Steam is not DRM. At least I hope it was a joke; otherwise it's borderline trolling."

OMG, I thought this special debate is already over and mostly in favor of Steam being DRM, but obviously not (everywhere).

Actually I'm rather pessimistic. "Patience is virtue." - I guess this means that there are no plans and they don't want to discuss it either. Last time I heard about it, they said something like: Steam is so great and everything else is so much effort so that it just doesn't pay off, which is debatable but yeah, maybe they come to GOG.

1) Context.
Question: Why doesn't Paradox bring their games to GOG?
Answer: Paradox uses DRM (steam)
Comment: This is an odd joke, otherwise it's borderline trolling.

2) As we were discussing yesterday, Steam by itself is a delivery method. So no, Steam by itself isn't DRM. It may deliver DRM'd games that use Steam's CEG as DRM, but Steam is not DRM by itself.

There was also talk at some point of whether the earth was round or flat, and that special debate was over and mostly in favor of the Earth being flat. There's also debate on whether the Americans landed on the moon or not, with opinions divided.

So, if Steam can be used as non-DRM, then it's not DRM, even if it's mostly used as one. It's like saying that since most Germans are white, Germans are white, then having Boateng step up.

You're right although Steam is often associated with its DRM especially when you talk about DRM because most of the games there (90% or more) and most of the games sold (probably much more than 90%) on Steam have DRM.

It gets terribly complicated to express that most games on Steam have Steam's (in) famous DRM but Steam itself of course is no DRM. It ends in a funny language exercise.

Steam is DRM*.

*Meaning that most games on the internet plattform commonly known as Steam selling digital games have Steam's DRM which in no way should mean that there aren't games on mentioned plattform that may not use Steam's DRM which in truth is called CEG but may also be called Steam's DRM.

If you want make a proposal how man should express that Steam games are mostly DRMed which is not too long, please go ahead.

What about: Steam is mostly DRM.

Okay, the important point here is that Paradox itself doesn't use Steam's DRM or do they? So for them Steam might be DRM or might not. I think it comes down to this.
