cmdr_flashheart: edit: just fyi, the pastebin is for games which DON'T work DRM-free.
Oh, I was about to say. Seeing Terraria on that list before your edit in that post made me curious (Nope, still needs Steam running in the background). =/
Thanks for the clarification.

Also, been thinking. Wouldn't a more accurate title for this thread be "Steam Games that Don't Require Steam to Run", and have no other DRM with it being mentioned within the OP? Not trying to downplay anything that's going on in this thread, but I thought that would be more appropriate for what's going on here. Just a thought.

Anyways...
Half Minute Hero. Anybody try to see if that game requires Steam running in the background? Been curious about that title for the past few days.

I don't want to talk the list down - your efforts are appreciated - but the original pastebin was outdated and/or flawed, games like Half-Life or FTL are (now?) DRM-free. It's tricky with false positives if you use a blacklist.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I also think some games made it on their because someone(s) might have confused the wiki and the pastebin.

Regardless, I think that if we keep the wiki up-to-date, it should be fine. I have to say, though, if there's a game I really like and I see it on the pastebin, I try again anyways because who knows ^^

The way I do it, is that I just check whatever games I currently have installed.

But later, I am going to check some games which take minutes to install, so it's easier/faster for me. Both ways are a good way to do it, imo.

I tried Half Minute Hero a while back, and unless something has changed, it does require Steam to be running, unfortunately; I'll try it again later, though.

I got the game from that Groupees bundle an hour ago. And...yep, requires Steam to be running in the background in order to play. Oh well, so much for that. =/

I didn't see it in the thread (both search and other stuff) and was wondering that, but thanks anyways. :)

Does anyone know if the great game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is DRM free.
And I can´t find these Games on the List: Alien Breed, Ion Assult, Lumines
and please tell me is Toy Soldiers DRM free!!! Thanks.
If someone could, please

Add Gun Metal, can run w/o steam as per the post linked.

Add Valdis Story, can run w/o steam as per the post linked. Note: delete the steam_api.dll, and it should run.

I'll start editing the wiki myself once I figure out how to not ruin it when I do it, lol.

For anyone who has it/them, would you be willing to test Lost Planet, either the original or the Colonies Edition? The demo runs without Steam, but I don't want to just assume that means the full version will, as well.
For anyone who has Dragon Commander on Steam...
...is it DRM-FREE there?

Or when you have Steam client-program closed, does running the game's launcher or its main EXE file unfortunately force the Steam client-program to boot-up?

GoodOldGamesUser: Does anyone know if the great game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is DRM free.
I just tried this - since I have it on Steam.

Running the Enslaved.EXE file from the actual game-folder while Steam client-program is closed DOES NOT boot-up the Steam client-program. :D

Enslaved.EXE is in this location:
{wherever you stored it within the Steam folder}\Enslaved\Binaries\Win32\Enslaved.EXE.

Game's running just fine. :D

I should note:
I have NOT tried copying all 14.3 GB of this file to another folder to see if it boots-up, though.
Maybe someone else wants to try this, since I don't wanna copy 14GB somewhere else?
I only have ran the EXE from the Steam-folder directly, while Steam program is closed - and that indeed works. :D

It is perfectly possible to implement DRM without having any kind of client running.

But, I don't know really what DRM that Enslaved is using, if it even is.
There's no sort of Securom, Tages, or any of that madness - from what I see.
You just boot the game from the game-folder and its Enslaved.EXE - and it goes, even w/ Steam closed.

I was trying to figure out where saves went - found 'em, thanks to this post:

For me, it's in the last location the guy listed - since I was playing w/ Steam program closed (i.e. no Steam-Cloud saves).

realkman666: Yes. Imperial Edition.
Awesome.
Thanks. :D

I will have to make sure that I get it from Steam then, when I get around to buying it.
I love when Steam basically gives you both worlds of DRM-FREE benefits + Steam benefits.

I wish this game had a demo, though.

I was waiting for a sale on GOG, but I just settled on the current sale instead. I feel dirty.

Other Larian games are also on the wiki, fyi:

Thanks for checking Enslaved, I'll add it in when I get the chance.
