Nowadays, there's no specific limit on text files, but the practical limit depends mainly on the editor you use. In pre-XP Windows, you were limited to 64K (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad_(software)). I wouldn't recommend trying to open anything larger than a gig, but this depends on how much memory you have available and what else you're running at the time.

It is not web connected except if you choose to pull down game descriptions and cover art/screen shots from websites like GameSpot. It should be safe to store stuff like that.
It sounds like you just want a spreadsheet. I'm sure there are document templates available for MS Office or OpenOffice that will do that.

No, I don't want a spreadsheet. I want something that lets me sort my games and display information about them when I need it, without being restrained by the size and layout of a spreadsheet.

I'm still trying to figure out how to add search capabilities to custom databases (I'm sure it's listed somewhere in their forums, I just have to search harder.) I want something simple, and with graphics, but without a ton of bloat.

Game Collector isn't free, and Sisimizi was pretty slow and the plugins wouldn't work right on my system (it was decent, though.)

Update: So it turns out GCStar won't let you use search plugins if you create your own database, because the plugins are heavily tied to the collection templates or somesuch. That sucks.

Also, the CSV import option was kinda broken until I realized it -really- doesn't like it if you try to import ASCII text as UTF-8 (which is the default import setting.) I always thought UTF-8 was supposed to be backwards compatible with ASCII - guess not!

So! I've managed to import the majority of my console game database to the program via CSV files. I never got started on my PC collection, so I guess now is as good a time as any.

I think GCstar has skinning/theming functionality. Can't you use the existing database structure and just theme it to show only the fields that you are interested in?

I used GCStar for a short while ca. half a year ago, it seems like it has some new features now - I'll have to try it out.

I really don't know. There's a lot of missing information on how certain things work, like fields that are "dependent" on others. While I'm able to hide the stuff I don't want in its main video game template, some things are still scattered around tabs that I don't want.

It's still better than other free alternatives. :\

There are Android apps for both programs too.

It is, mostly, but there's a few wonky characters that can screw you up. You might be running into a line break vs. carriage return issue on your lines, if the program demands only one and somehow you have the other it won't see multiple lines.

So would you say you're solved as far as finding a program? GCStar is the ticket?

... Yeah, I think I'm going to stick with GCStar. I had to rebuild my collection from scratch because of an unbelievably nasty bug that I stumbled upon when trying to remove a custom field (it made the database unloadable, but the data was still there). As long as I make frequent backups I should be fine.
