I had bought the IR bundle that included Serious Sam 3 and the steam key I was given for it is listed as a CD Key in the Desura page that includes all the CD Keys for your owned games. I don't know about IGS, though.

EDIT: I just realized that I had given away this particular Steam key, since I had already bought the Serious Sam Pack. So I thought I should check if that is a problem. I launched Desura and chose to install the game, which launched the Steam client and its installer for SS3 without a problem.
So if the Desura game requires activation on Steam, you must of course own the game on Steam in order to play it on Desura, but my guess is that the Desura key is not linked to the Steam key (since you don't need to activate that specific steam key).

Not quite same situation. Gnomoria only had a desura key til the dev had the game greenlit and we got allocated steam keys. Not sure why steam key is needed to be used when the game is already on desura with a desura key.

Was the game playable on Desura before Steam keys were given?

I think i tried it once. Cant recall. It was a long time before the steam keys were added though

Ok, mystery solved! (Subtitled "that was quick")

It does indeed tell you that it needs to be activated on Steam, but it doesn't actually need to be activated on Steam you can just click launch and it will play.

As a preface, there are some games on Desura which require you to use Steam. When you try and install them you are presented with a message like the one Gnomoria is showing and you have to register the key (or otherwise have the game in your Steam account) because if you don't, then clicking "launch game" will start Steam which will then complain that you're trying to start a game you don't have.

What has happened here is that they've added optional Steam keys for everyone and the system has used the same message that it uses for all games with Steam keys and gives the impression that you need to register it when you don't.

Also an interesting note for IGS customers... the key I've been told by Desura that I need to register, is different from the one that IGS gave me. >.>

Thanks for the feedback. Only problem is. I had Gnomoria from IGS on desura first. I *think* it launched fine before. But since they added steamkey i keep getting the activate on steam. Hitting Launch and Launch now prompts the same activate key on Steam.

I got the game from IGS too... clicking launch started the game without Steam starting up or anything. Clicking activate made Steam start up though...

I don't think we're going to get any hints today because IGS are at PAX East, but I bet they've saved something good for today's release.

I'm disappointed.I thought you like new and different stuff?. I don't mind alpha games as long as they aren't repeats (god forbid kenshi makes an appearance).having said that you get chapter 1 of 5 (unsure if its all in then same game) and it'd only v0.1.4. oh well its a crap shoot for me :)

Just not that interested in the game and, on top of that, it's in alpha on Desura and has more or less had one update in the 2 and a half months it's been available.
