We Americans are hungry for 3 things: Land, OIL, and Money. We probably wouldn't even be in the middle east as of now if there was oil there.
Again with the Iraq war stuff... Do you want to start another thread? I think you may risk derailing this one... Also, I think you'll find that relatively few Americans are really concerned with land itself, these days, unless they want to hike through it. They're much more interested in how a given piece of land can be developed.
Americans are also hungry for fame (of the "Great Legacy for future generations to admire" variety), social justice, clean/inexpensive energy, religion/spirituality, and maintaining America's status as "The World's Greatest Superpower." These things tend not to come up on TV, though. That's my point.
