Also, I think you'll find that relatively few Americans are really concerned with land itself, these days, unless they want to hike through it. They're much more interested in how a given piece of land can be developed.
Americans are also hungry for fame (of the "Great Legacy for future generations to admire" variety), social justice, clean/inexpensive energy, religion/spirituality, and maintaining America's status as "The World's Greatest Superpower." These things tend not to come up on TV, though. That's my point.
