First of all, I already knew this community is great, far above the internet average.

As you all know, we have several time passing games on this forum. Word association, Three Words, Corrupt a Wish, Post a Random Fact about the Poster Above You,...

Although I know how much below average Steam community is (no, not trying to generalise, you can find great people there as well, along with several GOGers, but that IS what is visible to a random bystander), I thought I should make an experiment and perhaps be surprised to how wrong my perception of that huge community is.

So, I choose Steamgifts as the experiment venue. I realise it cannot be representative of the whole Steam community (nothing can), but I didn't want to venture to actual Steam forums, since I don't ever use them.
I opened the formentioned 4 word games in SG forums. Few hours later I came back and saw, among the few who actually went with the game, something that can be only described as FUBAR (Google). My experiment actually started several days before with other things, trying to find intelligence and...well, human beings. The 4 games were just to close-off the experiment.

Unfortunatelly I was proven right about that community (which in no means represents whole Steam community).

BUT THE POINT OF ALL THIS IS, although I knew how great you all are, I now found out just how great you are and it is my sincere honor to be among you. RESPECT and THANK YOU

(No need to post anything, I just wanted to say what I said, nothing more.)

Yeah, we're fucking awesome. Especially me :D
The steam gifts community actually seem to be even worse than the Steam community. The steam community just suffers from being very large, thus there is a lot of "anonymity" to hide in, but you do find plenty of genuinely helpful people there. The steam gifts forums just seem to be a be attracting the worst elements of the steam community.

"Free stuff" always attracts the worst in people. If I never need to get rid of toxic waste, I would use a sign saying "free" and people would probably grab it out of my hands.

...and then proceed to throw it in your face.
Oh, oh yeah? Well, if we're so great, why don't you marry us!?

:p
I imagine that people who are interested in older games are generally older than other gamers, and therefore hopefully more mature.

As for Steam Gifts, I missed that experiment of yours, but I generally ignore forum games anyway (I don't really understand their point). I agree though that the Steam Gifts community is one of the worst I frequent (mainly due to a number of jerks). I don't think GOG is a level above most communities I've enjoyed, certainly the anti-Steam posts here can get annoying, but it's pretty decent.

I actually dislike all those threads you mentioned and think the comments are pretty lame. Then again I'm an asshole
I know I am awesome, but thanks for mentioning it anyways. :D
AWW YEAH
On second thought, I think that Steam Gifts is better. While the number of jerks there is high, there are nonsense and fun threads, and I find a thread such as "post your metal music" better than any forum games. Looking at the GOG forum topics, they're pretty boring on the whole.
I'm greater than the rest of you plebs. True and end of story.

I demand double-bind experiments in a statistically significant number of gamer communities.

You are right. Everything about Steam sucks.

P.S. How easy is it to take someone completely out of context?!

P.P.S. GOG is gr8. $team sux 4 eva.

P.P.P.S. I don't think I'm one of the people the OP is referring to...
