Yeah, it's always funny for me, when I hear people saying how Gamersgate is big and the biggest competition to steam :D

Just two years ago, they had like 5 employees :D

Alexa is counting forum visits too, and GOG gets about a million a month to the forum. GG doesn't have a forum, they just sell games.

GG currently has over 4.500 games in their catalog. GOG has just over 400 and old games don't sell anywhere near as much as newer games, which is at least 50 percent of what GG sells.

GG is far bigger than GOG and, yes, they are a competitor to Steam. They might not be a big one :), but I know a lot of people that won't buy on Steam and love buying on GG, myself included. I just checked my list and I bought 19 games on GG this month so far. On GOG, only 4.

I'm never closing the browser window again. I love Tex Murphy, but my Wishlist just grows so much faster than my shelf of game.

I don't know if that's relevant, but GG bestselling title is Civilization 5 now, and it has 1000 votes/ratings

For example, The Withech 2 has over 6000 ratings, Planescape over 7000 ratings, and Legend of Grimrock 1329. But you don't have to buy a game on GOG to rate it, so...

All that means is that GamersGate took money from thousands of people and then sent them over to Steam to pick up their order.

Ratings mean nothing. You have to buy a game on GG to rate it, and a lot of people won't even bother doing that. On GOG, anyone can rate games.

GamersGate is a much bigger site. GOG is very small. With only 400 games, that's not a lot of product. Plus, a lot of people who frequent the forums might spend a lot of time on GOG, but they don't spend a lot of money unfortunately. I mean, come on, some people are complaining about a $5.99 price tag, so how much are they realistically spending on GOG? Not much, obviously.

The price tag on many games on GG, on the other hand, is upwards of 40 bucks, and they're top selling games that people are actually looking for. Few gamers, compared to the massive hundreds of millions of gamers worldwide, are looking for Gabriel Knight 2 or Broken Sword. But they are looking for Civ 5 or Crusader Kings 2.

I was delighted to have the chance to finally get Broken Sword 4. One of my fave game series.

Most gamers are looking for the latest Call of Duty.


ETA: Oh and btw, Top Sellers on GamersGate is for the week or month (sorry can't remember which?) and not all-time like it is on GG.

When you put it that way you're right. The sales of those franchises dwarf stuff like Broken Sword (i think). I would still play call of duty, but i'd much rather pay $5-$10 for something like broken sword than $35 for the latest call of duty (or whatever the cost of a new game is in dollars).

I wouldn't be so fast in judgement. We have no data besides the fact that GOG is currently employing three times as much personal as GG. (If wikipedia and GOG.com is to believed)

That alone means that either GOG is actually making more revenue than GG or GG is heck of a lot more profitable than GOG.

We have no sales data, no listing of registered accounts. No nothing. Yes, GG catalogue is bigger, but they just pile those games up and offer next to none support for them. The catalogue alone doesn't mean anything.

Not to mention the fact that a huge number of their titles are just DLCs, which usually cost very little, and probably have low margins as well.
