I'm not a fan of Game of Thrones. There,I said it.I don't like the idea of having a lot of characters die just for shock or to show how the universe is brutal and I think that the sex scenes are unnecessary and are there just for fan service(I have low tolerance of fan service).
But I have to say that it has a very great lore and I love how it deconstructs several epic fantasy cliches and tropes. So,why am I reading the books?
Simple,I love reading fantasy novels and, according to my brother,it's very different from the TV show and he's right,I feel more immersed and I feel in love with the characters and the situations they're in.
The lore is passed as you read, from the Rebellion to the Battle at the Trident to the previous Winter.I loved the lack of appendices(just there to give you the Major and Minor Houses).
Anyway,I'm halfway through the first book and it does start out slow but it picks up the pace and you read expecting the next chapter like and always alking what'll happen next.
They are good books. Though I think book 3 or 4 one of them is kinda slow and boring, but it's worth getting through.
I own all 5 "essential" Middle Earth books in Hardcovers.

The Hobbit
Lord of the Rings
The Silmarillion
Unfinished Tales
and Children of Hurin

And I have yet to read them becasue I am so busy with games.

LotR can be a chore to read through especially the second book. But they are great books.

The first three books are some of the best fantasy novels I've read, the last two are only ok as Mr. Martin chases too many rabbits.

I say it took me 3 months to read.

The most boring chapter in Two Towers was litirally Frodo and Sam just walking from one place to another and talking.

The Witcher books are some of the best dark fantasy novels ever written.I highly recommend them.

I guarrentee you the show is going to have to completely deviate from the book and come up with its own conclusion while Martin writes his own in the books.

And HBO has been making comments that they will make a Game of Thrones movie. Saying that they will end the series with a theatrical movie.

I was thinking of getting them aswell. Along side Orcs.

I was gonna post Harry Potter for shits and giggles but no. I read the second book...and it took me only a couple of hours to finish because the books were not that wordy and I felt like I was reading the script of the movie because the movie was almost word for word exactly like the book (thus people praising the first 2 films being the most faithful.)

Yep, read the books and watched the series. Books I find to be better than tv shows/films of the same, mainly because you can include yourself into the world, i.e. its all in your head, where tv/film is more of a visual thing. I.e. its hard to get into something when someones brat in front is throwing popcorn around.

As for the tv series, it has some moments. Most of the acting is pretty poor, Tyrion/Tywin and the Hound are the only ones who stick in mind. The story is ok. The budget obviously increased over the seasons. As for the last one, well it did veer off from the books, and remember that not everything in the book will be in the series, they need to edit it for a wider audience, so less lore, history, etc. and more squishy noises and decapitations. This can be related to the whole Tom Bombadil LOTR films missing part for instance.

Anyways, enjoy the books!
Read the first book after watching 5 seasons of the show.

Still reall really good. I'm out bargain hunting for the second one.

Also I can't wait to see what a properly handled Dorne Expedition (basically the whole of season 5) looks/reads like.

I've since seen it reported that they're planning 3 more series to wrap everything up.
I enjoy the books very much. Also enjoy the series, despite its shortcomings. I find that, since I know what happens in the books, I can fill in the gaps and don't mind what they left out (since I know what was suppsoed to be there). Where they deviate from the story, I also enjoy it. Kind of like an alternate story line, so it's all good. The gratuitous sex, I'm not a big fan of. Not because I have any objection to tits and ass, but I agree it's just pandering and fan service and it irks me. They could just take that screen time and push more of the story from the books. *shrug* Still, overall, I'm liking the tv series a lot.

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit? Read that in 3 days. Get on it, elmo!

^This - especially the carved out characters are really refreshing not just simple black and white
But its also a little annoying later that it seems to much rabbits
(even when he kills much of the rabbits for just one more thrill)

The Game of Thrones writers already know how the last books ends, and they said that that they will keep that ending if the author doesn't finish his books when the show ends. That's why he started to write and finish his sixth book next year. He wants people to read the end from the books first, not on TV.
