I was about to buy Shogun 2 from a store, I thought it safe to check how big the Steam update was before it runs first.

10gb update. Unbefuckinglievable. I could download 5 games for that.

It's not written on the side of the game it needs an extra 10gb download to even run. That's $200 dollars extra on my Wi-Fi internet. Is there a rule somewhere you have to actually state what games need to run on the back of the box before you buy it?

Is this just straight up fricken lying? Shady business practices or what?

Optional big patches from developers to make games better is nice of the devs. Forced 10gb updates that aren't even mentioned to even run the game is not cool. Not cool at all.

It only says you have to accept the Steam user agreement online before the game runs, that's it. Nothing about 10gb of downloads before it runs. Not one word. Lies! Steam lies!
Not a Steam fan myself but I'm thinking this is as much a dev/pub problem as anything. Steam just distribute what they're given, and if they're given a game that needs a 10GB patch right off the bat, well, that's not really their fault. As to telling you about it, I'm not sure what to tell you except to check the game forum and the dev/pub website for the game.

But I agree that the situation in general does suck.
At the very least it should say "Downloaded updates may be required to run the game."

Gabe Newell, your a liar and you will spend an eternity aboard the Flying Dutchman, serving Davy Jones.

i am not sure if any game mentions that it requires downloaded updates to run the game , most games these days tend to have day 1 patches , you should contact sega about releasing buggy mess and patching the whole game later.

You will run into this with any steam retail disc, if i bought a 2007 release orange box steam retail copy of course the game is going to need updates to run.

its just not steam microsoft , sony all have this issue

It makes me really angry as a gamer. Yay for people with unlimited internet, everyone else can piss off.

Here, choke on the 20gb update. Your obviously not rich enough to play our games so who cares, right?
Yep,I remember the times updates stuffed Skyrim because they weren't compatiable with mods.
As for the size of them they will nearly always be big with AAA games.

Very foolish on Steam's part not to clearly state how much hard drive space the game requires. If someone gets a nasty surprise like this and demands a refund, what does Steam do? Give the refund, or risk getting taken to court for this?
Had a similar problem, some time ago, when I actually decided to give Steam a chance. ( Needless to say, that didn't end well, but I've been happily using GOG ever since. )

And I'm on a somewhat slow connection with a monthly limit, as well, so you have my sympathy. Big patches and version updates can be a problem even with GOG, but at least it's your choice if and when you want to download it.
I'm sorry, but aren't you overreacting a little?
Shady business practices? Lying? What? That would be SEGA's fault, not Steam's.
Moreover, the system requirements do say you need "32GB free hard disk space", how big did you expect the download to be?...

I get a feeling part of the steam user agreement says that they can do whatever they like and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

I'm gunna start spelling steam without a capital "s" from now on, lol.

That is almost every EULA. Fuck shrinkwrap licenses.
Isn't Steam (or GOG, Desura, Origin, uPlay, PSN, Xbox Live...) fault, it's a provider one, capped internet and ridiculous prices, digital stores can do nothing against it.
It's Steams Fault the game is a large download, it's steam's fault emperor turns Darth vader, It's Steams fault that the windows are all moist... Damn you steam!

Talk about over reacting. Is this just another excuse to bitch about steam?

Yesterday, I used old 3.5" floppy diskette for copying couple of files. Can you imagine amount of diskettes needed for copy 10Gb patch? :)
