The Free Land of Gogan is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by Doctor Marcin with an even hand, and notable for its ban on automobiles. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 2.136 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Education, with areas such as Religion & Spirituality and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 55%, and even higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.
'A is for Annulment' is a popular children's song, scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, radio shows frequently feature people denouncing religion, and prime real estate is devoted to wind farms and solar energy generators. Crime is totally unknown. Gogan's national animal is the Goglodyte, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Gog.
Gogan is ranked 337th in The North Pacific and 11,328th in the world for Nicest Citizens, with 26 Smiles Per Hour (net).

Cancer Sufferer Demands Euthanasia Bill (issue 324)
Dorothy Terwilliger lies immobilized in a hospital bed, unable to move. She has end-stage cancer, and wishes to end her struggle against death. However, laws prevent her doctors from obeying her wishes.
1. Dorothy and her family are campaigning for a "Dying with Dignity" bill, to change this situation. She implores the government to legalize euthanasia.
2. "I understand this is a very difficult time for these people," says freelance medical writer Ruby Patel. "But the solution is not to let our medical system slide down the slippery slope of killing people in pain. We must cure, not kill. This is not the right time for euthanasia."
3. "I agree, but go further: there is never a right time for euthanasia," says Bishop Alexei Spirit. "The lives we lead are given to us by the grace of God, and he decides when they end. It is not for us to question God's divine purpose, no matter how odd or screwed-up it may seem."
