Khadgar42: I'm happy with a single GTX 970 and at some point, I might buy another one
after the shit storm of 3.5GB+0.5GB memory crossbar causing poor SLI performance? why would you even consider that option? AMD 390/390X should be happening quite soon, June according to rumours, and 980 Ti may well be sooner in response. Whether you prefer AMD or Nvidia there should be better ways to upgrade available this year.
Overkill? More like under-kill. You'll need AT LEAST three titans, more likely four, to run a game like Zork.

I'm still having no issues with my GTX 970 whatsoever with any game I play in full HD. Granted that was a shitty move by NVidia, but I like my GFX card so far. Besides, as I said already, it is more likely I use this card a as PhysX dedicated card when I get a new one next year.

I run a few games in Tri sli with 980's and Only a few support sli like farcry 2 and other demanding games on this site in that respect but mainly those Broken AAA games are the ones that need it the most unfortunately. cough farcry 4, unity, cough DAMN MY LUNG >:( Stick with 1 980 the evga model or msi to get the best card for the money.

if you have the extra go 980 and skip the 970 but if you are not into much of those major AAA games then the 970 is perfect for a LONG time to come.
Great discussion guys. I ended up getting two GTX 980s for Matlab CUDA coding as well as gaming. It is complete overkill for the older games in my library, but makes the Witcher 3 look awesome. :)

You should have started with that one....

When I was looking at buying the cards I did some additional research on MATLAB GPU programming and realized it was a neat area I'd overlooked initially. GTX 980s have more than 10% performance gains when it comes to MATLAB GPU speed or at least so I've been able to surmise.
very good
Hmm yes quite indeed.

Actually you nailed the best choice when it comes to balance out gaming/programing and price. The TITANS would offer better performance on the gaming/programming front, but for a significant price increase, and anything specialized like AMD Fire Pro w9000 or NVidia Tesla/Quadro would give you a better ratio for programming vs. price, but not a worthy boost when it comes to gaming.
