timppu: I think I'll try this today in Windows 7... So what exactly is the problem (link)? If I am able to run GOG Gorky 17 at all without visible errors (with or without nGlide), is it fixed? It happens on all PCs, or only some?
JudasIscariot: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/gorky_17/what_is_the_hope_of_getting_gorky_17_fixed Ok, I tried it on Lenovo T400 with Win7/64bit. (GOG has been pretty slow today, the game installer trickled down first very slowly, later I was able to download it properly.)
I installed it under C:/Games/GOG.com/Gorky17/
nGlide 0.97 installed (I didn't check if it is the latest version, but at least my Carmageddon 2 launcher, as well as Diablo 2 video tester, detects it as "3Dfx Glide").
When selecting either "Primary Display Driver/Direct3D HAL" or "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series /Direct3D HAL" upon the game launch, with or without Hardware Zoom, the game aborts when you start a new game and skip the intro with the following error: "DirectX initialization error. Please reboot your computer." I didn't try to reboot my computer.
With Software Renderer, the game seems to work pretty fine, and looks fine to me too (after all the game seems to be mostly 2D, ie. 2D backgrounds with some polygonal 3D characters.). There was some sound "flapping" in the menu, and occasionally when some character gives a speech, but otherwise it seemed ok. Maybe I'll check it later on either XP or Win98SE, whether the HW acceleration really looks any better so that it would make it worth bitching about. I already owned this game (Odium/Gorky 17) on a CD too, never installed it though before this GOG version.
However, the thing is that I didn't see any option for "3Dfx" or "Glide" in the launcher, nor did I see any optional .exe's inside the installation directory (nor specific mention about Glide support in the manual). Are you guys sure this game even had any 3Dfx support built in? If it has only software renderer or Direct3D support, then obviously nGlide will not help it in any way, because this is not a 3Dfx-enabled game.
Or then I was doing something wrong, I hope not.
