Salem, Massachusetts, in the 17th century. It is a time of strife and mistrust. Several children in the once beautiful town of Salem have gotten fits and fevers. Cattle was disfigured and strange noises disturb every night. Soon it becomes clear: Salem is afflicted by witches. Some of the honest folk of this small, godfearing community are actually neither honest nor godfrearing. But are vile witches in league with the Devil.

So you called in an Invesigator, Chief Persecutor and Judge, Chief Magistrate William 'Vitek' Stoughton and things got better. Kind of. At first ... he found some witches and had them executed. But then the witches fought back! William Vitek Stoughton was found one morning drained of all his life energy, looking like a mummy. A mummy with a slit throat, although he was safely in his warded room. Locked from the inside. That was the final proof that witchcraft is real. And that the entire town was in danger. Because now people started dying instead of just having fits or bad dreams. Each Night one person, seemingly at random, died. Until the town banded together to lock away all even slightly suspicious women. They all were locked in the Town Hall, the town's biggest and sturdiest building. The windows are barred and all exits are guarded Day and Night. Let those suspicious women figure out amongst themselves who the witches are. And if all of them die in the process, well, then that was God's will!

You are those women. Single women who so far refused to marry, unloved wives, widows, unruly youths. In short: the town's undesirables and the most suspicious. Among you, there are some witches. Witches who, for some reason, kill every Night. Your only chance to survive is figure out who those witches are and yield them to the authorities to be lynched. At the end of each Day the authorities expect a result from you and you will only get out once the killing has stopped for good. Anyone who doesn’t contribute to finding the guilty will be seen as extra suspicious.

Meanwhile, the witches collect power. Each Night, they sacrifice one person to their dark god. As soon as they have sacrificed enough people, they will have the power to influence the minds of the puny populace of Salem. As soon as they control the voting process among the suspicious, they will also control Salem.

0. Lifthrasil is the moderator for this game. If you have any issues, contact him via PM. Or his deputy Vitek.

1. Cryptoclaiming is forbidden.
(In short, cryptoclaiming is having everyone fullclaim in some sort of (preferably nearly unbreakable) code, which makes it all but impossible for the mafia to win.)

2. Betting among players is strictly forbidden.

3. Real Life issues and situations should and will always take priority over what happens in the game. If a player presents a real life issue as a reason on why they need a bit more time or are temporarily unavailable to partake normally in the game that reason should be accepted and respected by everyone else (including the mod). Everyone should always treat real life problems/situations in a gentlemanly manner and never try to make accusations or gain leverage in the game based on that. If these issues become too overwhelming the incapacitated player should inform their mod and ask for a replacement as soon as possible or if they are unable to do so the mod should take steps in finding a replacement for them. Everyone should be playing the game for fun and treat each other with the necessary respect. Therefore we shall always assume that every real life reason for inefficient participation in the game is 100% real and has to be taken as such. We shall also count on everyone playing the game to show proper respect and sportsmanship to their fellow players and the mod by never abusing this "free pass". If someone is caught taking advantage of everyone's good will they will be immediately allowed to find another place to play forum mafia.

4. Have fun and enjoy the game. While shouting at each other is expected in a game of mafia, please remain civil to your fellow players. If someone annoys you, don't get offended on a personal level, don't hold a grudge. Just lynch them!

5. You don't need to unvote, but your votes should be bolded. Unbolded votes will not be counted.

6. Please bold any questions you have for me, so it's easier for me to see them. Please do not use bold for any other reason, if you need to stress a point, use italics or underline instead.

7. It goes without saying that discussing this game outside this thread is prohibited.

8. Do not edit your posts for any reason. Remember there is a forum feature that automatically merges posts made within 10 minutes. There is also a forum bug which prevents your post from appearing sometimes when it should appear on a new page. Making a second post in this case after less than 10 minutes can cause your post to be merged and appear edited.

9. If you die, stop posting in this thread. A single "bah" post is allowed and encouraged. Your "bah" post should not contain any game relevant information.

10. You are expected to make a post at least once every 48 hours. If you need to be away for longer, please let me know in advance.

11. You may write about any flavour you receive in your PM (see Notes about the game below), including your name and role, but please do not quote any PM verbatim. Verbatim quotes will get you modkilled!

12. Breaking rules, depending on the severity of the infraction, can get you modkilled at my discretion. Getting modkilled can be hazardous to your health and means you lose regardless of whether your team wins or loses. It's also bad in general. Please don't get modkilled.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Important: Voting Rules:

Phase 1: Each Day will start normally. Voting will be normal and as soon as an absolute majority is reached, the Day will end. (You’ll notify the authorities that a guilty person was found). If no consensus is reached, the ‘Decision Bell’ will ring, signifying that it is time to make a decision. This will start Phase 2.

Phase 2: everyone not voting will be considered voting for herself. (voting No-Lynch is a valid vote too) If an absolute majority is reached, the Day still ends as usual. At some unspecified point after the Decision Bell, Phase 2 will suddenly end. (With the authorities coming in and counting the votes). The person with the most votes will be lynched. An absolute majority is NOT necessary. If two people tie, both will be lynched. If three or more die, a random lynchee will be chosen from among them. The Lynch ends the Day and starts Night. The only way to get a No-Lynch is, if a majority votes explicitly No-Lynch.

Night: plays normally. PRs submit Night-Actions, the Witches get to chat in a Night-Chat.

Phase 1 will be approximately 3 days. Phase 2 will be approximately 2 days. Both will be +/- half a day, exact length will be random. Night will be 2 days. So an entire round of play will take about 1 week.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Sample PMs:

Vanilla Townie:
You have been unjustly suspected of witchcraft. They locked you in with the other women of the town who might be witches. What’s worse: some of them surely are witches who are out to kill you all. Your only chance is to work together with all the other imprisoned women and find out who the actual witches are before they kill you.

Power and win-con: Your power is your vote. And dying for your team, if necessary. You win if all the witches are eliminated.

Witch Goon:
You have been suspected of witchcraft. They locked you in with the other women of the town. The fools. You will kill all those who don’t serve your god one by one until you and your coven have collected enough power to overthrow this pathetic town.

Power and win-con: you can vote and you can perform the factional night-kill. You can converse with your other coven members at Night. You win, when your coven controls the voting or nothing can prevent that condition from occurring.

Parity Cop:
[Town intro]
Power and win-con: You always had a sixth sense whether two people would get along well. Each Night you can contemplate someone and figure out, whether she belongs to the same faction as the person you contemplated in the previous Night. You get one N0 action. You win if all the witches are eliminated.

Vengeful Townie
You have been unjustly suspected of witchcraft - and someone will pay for that! They locked you in with all those bitches. What’s worse: some of them surely are witches who are out to kill you all. Your only chance is to work together with all the other imprisoned women and find out who the actual witches are before they kill you.

Power and win-con: you always were convincing when putting blame on others. When you are lynched, you can ‘confess’ knowing that someone else is a witch ‘too’. That won’t save you, but that other person will be lynched too. You win if all the witches are eliminated.

Witch Vanilla Cop
[Scum intro]
Power and win-con: You always had a way of knowing if someone is something special or boring. At Night, you can either perform the factional night-kill, or you can contemplate someone and figure out, whether they are boring (Vanilla Townie) or something else.

Neutral Survivor
You have been unjustly suspected of witchcraft - and frankly, you don’t care a bit about that town - or about the witches. As far as you are concerned, they all can die. Or rule. Or whatever. You just want to survive and leave this awful place.

Power and win-con: your only power is your vote. You win, if you survive until the end of the game, no matter which faction wins.

Neutral Lyncher/Survivor
[Player X] has accused your little sister of witchcraft. Your innocent sister was one of the first to be lynched, before the murders even started. But you will see justice done! You have volunteered to be locked in with the other women and you will ‘prove’ that X is a witch. When she dangles from the gallows, you will have peace. You know how to sneak out of the confine and you’ll leave the town after having achieved your goal.

Power and win-con: your only power is your vote. You win if you either contribute to the successful lynch of X (you have to be on the train and you’ll leave the game after the lynch) OR if you survive until the end of the game.

Dude, player list.

I need to use random.org.
Sorry. Added it to the first post.
Thanks. random.org selects...

Vote: muddysneakers
Vote JoeSapphire because he'll be at work and there's nothing he can do about it right now. Hah.
Can votes already placed in Phase One be changed in Phase Two??
Are these all the roles Lift or could there be more? As you don't mention a doctor.

Does the Witch Goon and Witch Cop mean there could be 2 kills per night, or is it either or?

Neutral Lyncher/Survivor and Neutral Survivor are interesting ones. Especially Neutral Lyncher because do we know whether Character X who there targeting is a Witch or Vanilla? I suspect we don't. Both would probably benefit from lurking and not upseting anyone.

I'm guessing neither Neutrals see night chat but that's a guess. Neutral Lycher certainly shouldn't as their win would be too easy.

Vengeful Townie I'm guessing kills based on who they suspect rather than a witch simply being eliminated.

I assume there can be multiple winners in this game, based on the win conditions

Isn't random.org voting deemed suspicious? I mean a vote has to be random on the first page for town but not for Witches or for Neutral Lyncher

flubbucket: Can votes already placed in Phase One be changed in Phase Two??
Yes. You can change your votes as much as you like until either an absolute majority is reached or until the Counting occurs (end of Phase two).

But if at any time during Phase two you unvote without placing your vote somewhere else, that unplaced vote will count against you.

Self lynching opportunities abound!

Please bold your questions in future, if you want an answer to them.

Yes, this setup is mostly open. That means there are no hidden roles. I.e. no Doctor. The only unrevealed thing is, if there are any neutrals at all and if yes, which ones.

But yes, if there is a Lyncher he doesn't get any information about the alignment of his target. Neither does the Vengeful Townie get any alignment information. That would be game-breaking.

And if there are Neutrals then yes, there can be multiple winners. The neutrals can win, independent on which major faction wins.

The Witches only have one Nightkill.

We will get alignment with a successful lynch correct??

Yes. Deaths due to lynch or NK will result in full flips with alignment and role. Modkills, however, may at my discretion remain unflipped. So don't get modkilled.
How long does phase 1 of day 1 last Lift?

supplementscene: How long does phase 1 of day 1 last Lift?
Approximately 3 days. Plus/minus half a day or so. So the Decision Bell will ring some time on Thursday.
