Like fangbite wrote in my other thread, I think it is good, if we could make a list, what game from GOG works good/ not so good with Ubuntu/Linux and Wine.
I will edit this post with alle tested games. :)
I take the start:
Games with Wine tested:
Descent 3
avatar
bagnaj97: it works perfectly if you take note of the following:
1. You must use the opengl renderer. After some fiddling I got direct3d working but it was slow.
2. I found oss sound to be better than alsa, but YMMV (change using winecfg)
3. Compiz must be disabled before playing. This is very important as direct3d wouldn't display anything except the hud and opengl had severe scaling issues (only top right of display shown over the whole screen). You can run the command "metacity --replace" to temporarily disable compiz, log out and in again to get compiz back.
This actually worked better for me than under vista x64 as under vista I couldn't get mouse control working.

Fallout
No Problems with the installation, starting the game also worked without any problems.
Fallout 2
No Problems with the installation, starting the game also worked without any problems.
Freespace
avatar
jsims2359: Freespace 1 runs on Ubuntu 8.04 with wine 1.1.4, but the sound cuts out and exiting the game will force you to kill the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Be advised.
UPDATE: The mouse is usable as a flight control, but just barely. There seems to be some disparity between the resolution of the game window and the resolution the mouse thinks is in effect. The effect is also noticeable in the hanger if you move your mouse pointer to the far right. You start to see some delay on both axises.

Giants: CItizen Kabuto
avatar
jmgreen7: Giants installed and started fine but the performance really tanked whenever the camera was facing a building/structure (like 5-10 FPS). Then I installed the GiantsHooks patch and the performance is now great. I haven't tested multiplayer.

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising
avatar
jsims2359: is running as it should on Ubuntu 8.04 with wine 1.1.4.
NOTE: You must emulate a virtual desktop in order for Direct X to be detected correctly which allows you launch the game. Also, the sensitivity of the x axis while using mouse control (with the helicopters) seems to fluctuate randomly from near perfect control to frustratingly unresponsive. Mouse works fine everywhere else.

Kingpin
avatar
danebramage: installs and runs fine (there's no cursor on the main menu screen, but since it can be navigated with the arrow keys, that's no big deal).

M.A.X.
avatar
danebramage: installs and runs fine (since it runs in DOSBox, it works best in a window where the top of the screen isn't cut off by the DOSBox window's title bar--hit Alt-Enter to go into windowed mode).

M.A.X. 2
avatar
danebramage: installs fine but wouldn't run for me the one time I tried. No big loss, as M.A.X. 2 sux and it comes bundled free with the original M.A.X.

MDK 1
avatar
Dash: works great under WINE, all except for the video. It's not bad though. It stretched the video out to the point where some of the game was off screen in the Y directions. A change of options to the display of games in a window fixed it.

Original War
avatar
FALK: Original War is somewhat playable, but with bad graphics in hud, wouldn't recommend it. Unable to run in VirtualBox because it cant detect the graphics card memory correctly. Maybe it works in vmware.

Perimeter
avatar
fangbite: Perimeter installed and ran fine. The only thing which might be considered a glitch is that the game just took over a piece of my desktop in the top left corner, carving out a number of pixels according to its resolution.
avatar
FALK: Runs great in wine 1.1.4 except the cursor is invisible, can be fixed by building and using wine-hacks: http://repo.or.cz/w/wine/hacks.git . I hope the patch enters mainline soon, but the bug has been known for almost a year.

Sacrifice
avatar
jmgreen7: Sacrifice installed and ran without a hitch and runs great. I haven't tested multiplayer.

Stonekeep
avatar
chris20636: In Fedora 8, the game would play fine for a 15-30 minutes and then the sound would go to a loud hiss. Some google searches seems to pinpoint the problem to the new X windows sound server in Fedora 8 and up called pulseaudio. I removed the pulseaudio packages from my system using yum. I rebooted and after playing with the volume control some, I got sound back which should be pure ALSA system. So far, that seems to have fixed the sound problem.
I didn't notice the mouse issue some have had under XP. However, I did notice it under Linux. The fix was the same though. Just don't use the mouse and hit ESC to get past the movie to the main menu. Then using the mouse at the menu and in the game works fine.

creed462: Update, Earth 2140 works with last wine, but Beneath a steel sky stopped working
avatar
listentoreason: BaSS is natively available for Linux as it is. In Ubuntu you can find it directly in the repositories:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/games/beneath-a-steel-sky
I first played it in Linux (I think an early Ubuntu installation) a couple years ago. Probably easiest to just install directly, rather than emulating and running the windows installer.

thanks man

cogadh: I'm kind of the resident Wine "expert" on the Ubuntu forums, so if anyone needs specific help with Wine, I can try to help out.

Could you help me set up Prince of Persia: SoT on Wine 1.0.1, Ubuntu 9.04, with my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470? Currently using the GFLRX driver.
(Sorry, when I bought this laptop I didn't know about all the ATI issues, otherwise I would have gotten one with an nVidia card.. :| )
Tnx in advance.

Yeah, Nvidia works much better for wine.
I'd try using wine 1.1.35 though. 1.01 is more than a year old.
You'll have to install wine's apt repository to get the latest version.

Thanks, already tried that and it works much better. A few glitches though, but that seems to be common. Hopefully ATI will make better drivers in the future, or I'll just have to buy me an nVidia..
edit: So you can add Prince of Persia to the list, works ok with Wine 1.1.35 apart from a few video glitches (in-game story characters other than the prince don't render well) but that might be because of my ATi card.

The open source ATi drivers are rapidly improving. Maybe someday they'll replace the proprietary driver. However, as of right now, it doesn't really work well for wine. It's great for normal desktop stuff, which the proprietary driver struggles with.
realMYST seems to be working after installing Indeo video codecs (winetricks icodecs). Tried with Wine-1.1.36.
I got Tropico to work, by mounting the data2 folder as the CD-ROM, which is something similar I had to do to get Anachronox to work under linux.
And I got Tropico 2 to work, by running from Terminal, but the menu graphics were upside down; The in-game graphics were OK though.
Creatures Series (1,2,3,DS) don't seem to work either very well or at all.
- Creatures 1 started, but you can't do anything.
- Creatures 2 wanted to go into 16-bit mode, but I was too lazy to do it. (Also needs to be done on windows)
- Creatures 3 didn't start at all, and when run from Terminal, it complained about not having a whole wack of windows dll files (and I even copied them from my windows!)
- Creatures Docking Station (DS), I didn't try, but apparently there's a Linux version on the site. (DS is apparently freeware.)
With the Creatures games, I'm pretty sure I had Wine running with an emulated desktop, but that's about all I remember.
Septerra Core: Worked without any hassles.
(Linux Mint 8, Asus EEEPc 1000H, Wine 1.11.36)
Has anyone had any luck running Constructor?
By changing graphics to DDraw and running the exe in wine, I can see the intro screens, and the video runs OK but with choppy sound, but the dosbox window crashes on the first menu.
Using the Ubuntu 9.10 version of Dosbox 0.73, I get error = please insert Constructor CD-ROM

Constructor is a Dos-based game, so there is no need to run it with wine. You can use the Linux version of Dosbox installed by your package manager.
The only win executable is the Graphical Setup program which does nothing for me in wine, you have to manually change the output method in dosbox.conf.
Make sure you set the correct sound card used by the game. Execute the setsound.bat file in dosbox and change both Digital and Midi as defined in dosbox.conf (SB 16 I think).
I run the game after cd-ing to the game's dir like this:
dosbox -conf ./dosbox.conf
The [autoexec] section in dosbox.conf will mount the const.gog file as the cd image in drive d:
I had no missing CD-ROM messages like you.

cutterjohn: Spellforce Platinum installs and runs fairly well. I have some graphical glitches that appear to be shadow related. (I strongly suspect the catalyst driver as it's a problem all on it's
lonesome...)

I had Spellforce running fine with a Nvidia GPU. I also had some major terrain defects, but they were fixed by turning off shadows.
URU Complete is playable but has some minor issues:
- the greetings text when you launch the game is hardly readable: you need to install corefonts, tahoma, fontfix via winetricks (don't know which one solved this issue)
- the mouse pointer in the game has some "unidentified" shape.
- the first character you encounter in the game (Zandi) has no voice.
- the mouse tends to leave the screen while you turn by the mouse (at least in virtual desktop mode)
Sound and musics are working, rendering is nice on maximum details. No native DirectX dlls are needed. Wine 1.1.36.

That works perfect thanks! I guess the same procedure for any Dosbox-based games then, guess I'd better learn how to play with it properly!
Myst: Masterpiece edition is playable, with some minor issues:
- Full screen does not work
- Quicktime is needed
- Game sometimes crashes
I used Wine 1.0.1 because of regression issues with the latest version.
I tried Myst Masterpiece and Riven. Plays perfectly in fullscreen in Debian Squeeze under Wine 1.1.16. There's only a minor cursor issue. I also heard that RealMyst and URU are playable. I'll try them later.
UPDATE: I recently solved the cursor issue. There is a patch for wine that should be applied on the source code.
Get the patch from here (see attachments):

Here are the instructions to compile wine on Debian:

Here's how to patch wine (if you place the patch file inside the wine source directory, use -p1 flag):
http://sdconsult.no/linux/wine-doc/getting-upgrading.html
It worked for me with wine-1.1.15 sources

Vampire:The Masquerade-Redemption is running under wine but has some issues:
- only fullscreen mode is working
- even in fullscreen mode I had to alt-tab out of the game and back into it when the main menu appears otherwise there was no mouse/keyboard input in the game.
- the game always crashes on exit with the default wine D3D registry entries: DirectDrawRenderer: "gdi" and OffscreenRenderingMode: "fbo". I had to switch to "opengl" and "backbuffer".
- internet play is not working (for LAN it might need Directplay).
That was the case using wine-1.1.37 and an Nvidia card.
