Just find this thread today. Very amazing.
I ain't used to classic-styled forums like reddit & GOG forums, and maybe a bit less active due to my own life. But hey, this is better than Steam groups I think.

I actually like GoG. Imagine if we were all stuck at Steam for example. Journalists sites tend to be full of marketting etc. Btw, lack of community is one reason why MMORPG genre failed so hard. CDPR should wait before moving online.

The topic was "dead" for some period, so I decided to bring it back to life.
So my thoughts about the forum in its current state. What I like: *you can reply to the messages of other gamers, so it will be much easier to find out what the previous statement in discussion; *you can insert images to the post and you do not need to upload it to some third-party service; *you can edit your post and you can format text in it.
What I do not like: *emojis are not supported in most of the GOG store (smiles, gifs, other cool things that are available in messengers like Telegram, etc.); *not as many text format options as in other services (even Steam have a better option to format text); *limitations to upload files (only 2 Mb, nowadays it is ridiculously small size).
That is all I wanted to write for now, maybe sometime later I will add some other good and bad features/bugs in the forum functionality. If I will add some additional thoughts those will be under the "Updates" section.

Updates: №1. What I do not like: *if I accidentally close the window with a message, that I started to write or already written, the system does not save the draft and I need to try to write all I wrote before by memory. That is my №1 DISLIKE to the forum system, and I think it will be №1 for a long time!

I don't like that GOG doesn't have automatic thread locks for ancient threads.

I don't like how people keep finding threads from 2015 and before with such ease. This thread is from 2014, and was over 600 days buried before someone decided to exhume it.

I don't like how the dark and light theme are half implemented, and are "slightly dark" and "Blindingly bright".

I don't like the lack of an inline post editor (without the use of userscripts).

I don't like how clumsy editing posts is.

I don't like the lack of tables, bulleted lists, spoilers, inline images, tables, or features that most BBcode forums have had since around 2001 or earlier.

I don't like the use of external bureaucracy in order to deal with reporting.

I don't like the abject lack of clarity on many of the policies here.

I don't like how display name is connected to account name. (That is silly and dangerous.) Nor do I like reauthentication being required to change it or an avatar, nor do I enjoy the one month wait between changing usernames.

I don't like how GOG doesn't support PNG avatars, they get compressed to crappy Jpegs of around 35% quality.

I don't like how there isn't a text buffer, so unless you've saved your post somewhere externally, kiss your original post goodbye.

I don't like how GOG hasn't even taken the most basic step of requiring one game on file in order to post on the fourms, neatly sealing away the spambots and GPTbots in a rice cooker. There are free games, it wouldn't be gatekeeping.

I don't like how worthless the profiles turned out to be. No index of reviews, no guides, no curators/GOGmixes, no wishlist entries...wouldn't it be nice for users to provide FAQs to other users and help them though games?

I don't like how it feels like a coinflip on the game forums if they're to be separated across series or melded into one.

I don't like how NSFW discussions are allegedly verboten, but that isn't really helpful if NSFW games are going to keep releasing into an ungated area of the forum where everyone (including children) can see them.

What, you don't think banning random words like "insti_tution" and making it impossible to post if you used one, without any way of knowing which word is the problem or even that a banned word is why your post won't go through as opposed to just some malfunction is the best possible way to handle spam?

It's a useful and nice thread, even if most of the provided info is somewhat obsolete. Thanks for bringing it back to it attention!

P.S.: Forum necromancy can be useful and/or fun. It shouldn't be forbidden

Unless it's a bot doing it as a feeble excuse to post their dreaded spam, which happens more frequent than it should...

Hey, dude if you dislike so many things about the GOG forum itself, my advice to you, stop visiting it and stop posting in it. That will make your life easier and maybe more enjoyable, maybe. I do not know you, I do not know what is your character, who your friends are, or even if you have friends...
As for me, I am Ukrainian, I live in Ukraine nowadays, I have not left the territory of my Ukraine for years! Even after 24.02.2022, I stayed in Ukraine while shells and bombs were falling all over (and NO, I do not overexaggerate!!!) even after all I saw I can definitely say that I have much better mental health than you, besides that, I can definitely say that my views on life are more stable than yours.
If you are so pessimistic try to find new people that will be on one wave with you, that help a lot. At least in my case, it does.

P.S. 2023-08-14 in your status - it is your day of death? If you are one of those who believe in "specific dates"? If so I may make you upset even more you are alive and 2023.08.14 was already, so this is not the right date but missmatching. One more thing people are alive even after 12.12.2012 that is one more misplaced date of DOOM, LOLs.

No no, it's much more simple. See, the admins who are broke the forum that day by accidentally forbidding all posts that contained a regular space. My date is a memorial to that fine day.

As for why I complain about the forums, yet keep posting on them? Because they could be so much better, that's why! I speak these not to merely whinge, but to bring attention to flaws which could be brought to the betterment of all. If I hated the forums so much, I'd actually try to get myself banned at this point. But I think they could be a great central hub for all things GOG, but GOG don't see it that way.

True that. I also consider it a very good thing that posts need to be text only, without emoticons, embedded images or videos or whatever else.

I do. Don't see why "necroing" is even frowned upon, not to mention desired to be banned. And old threads can still be useful, and additions may be made to them, or they can just be brought back into attention if still relevant.

ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: I don't like how the dark and light theme are half implemented, and are "slightly dark" and "Blindingly bright".
The bright is hardly blinding. Wouldn't even call it truly light, and it's not called like that in the settings either. It's not white, after all.
avatar
ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: I don't like how clumsy editing posts is.
Don't really see a problem there.
avatar
ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: I don't like the lack of tables, bulleted lists, spoilers, inline images, tables, or features that most BBcode forums have had since around 2001 or earlier.
You wrote tables twice. Spoiler tags would be useful, yes, and maybe bullet lists too, though you can easily do those yourself. Tables could also be useful in some cases, but can do without I guess. Definite no for inline images though.

Indeed, with you on these.

ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: I don't like how display name is connected to account name.
Fair enough.
avatar
ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: nor do I enjoy the one month wait between changing usernames.
I consider it far too little. Question the whole concept of changing usernames in itself, should at most be something only done under special circumstances, requests judged on a case by case basis by admins, not just user choice, whenever they feel like it.

It would be gatekeeping. The forum should be the forum, a place for discussions, not tied to one's library in any way. And if free games would count, bots could easily get those and be allowed in anyway.
avatar
ᛞᚨᚱᚹᛟᚾᛞ: I don't like how worthless the profiles turned out to be. No index of reviews, no guides, no curators/GOGmixes, no wishlist entries...wouldn't it be nice for users to provide FAQs to other users and help them though games?
Oh, a lot of things would be nice. But seems to me like profiles were another idea that was dropped along the way... Or just left as something tacked onto Galaxy...

Also find that ban ridiculous, seeing as the store carries such games. Don't want to have them restricted automatically, or even by default, though. Having settings to hide certain games and game types would be handy, yes, but only if they'd apply to all/any types.

Gah, took just seconds too long to have the posts merge.

Don't like that you can't delete your own posts.

Don't like the lack of a function to quote multiple posts automatically. (Can do it manually, but there's no notification in that case.)
