What's the story? Slip up in the version numbering?
I think this a completely different piece of sotfware, and has its own version numbering sequence. Think of it as Downloader 2 beta 0.9.0.1336. The previous versioning sequence would have no reflection on this one.
Also, it doesn't seem like the "newer" version uses Adobe AIR (a good thing)
I don't think it uses Air at all. I completely uninstalled Adobe Air [and the previous GOG.com Downloader tool] from my system and this new downloader app worked without a hiccup.
the .EXE file wasn't an installer like I was expecting.
Curiously, the GOGDownloader.exe seems to be the entire program. I first ran it from a temp directory, punched in my GOG login details, and it just worked. Then I shut it down, copied the .exe to my C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\ directory, launched the program again and it already had my login details ready to go. It must store my email/password somewhere on my system. The GOGDownloader.exe file can seemingly be launched from anywhere.
I updated my C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\GOG.com\ with a shortcut to the new GOGDownloader.exe and everything seems to run just fine.
So can I uninstall the crappy 0.9.30 version without affecting the new 0.9.0.1336? Can I uninstall AIR now too?
Yes and yes.
Seriously guys, were are the release notes? Where is the changelog? Give us some information!
A readme.txt would be useful, but documentation is almost always the last thing to be done on software releases. You might just have to wait a little while. I'm not sure that we can't write our own readme.txt in this thread though. GOGDownloader.exe isn't a very complex program [well, maybe the threaded downloading is], and we should be able to work most of it out ourselves.
New downloads are stored at:
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\GOG.com Downloads\[game title]\
eg. C:\Users\[username]\Documents\GOG.com Downloads\dragonsphere\setup_dragonsphere.exe
MD5 Hash check files for each game
GOG.com Downloader log file
GOG.com game title icons for download client
eg. C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\.data\7886b948eefd817aad1ed2554922bb4d78ddadb4.jpg is for Dragonshpere and matches the icon filename used on the GOG.com website
I haven't yet worked out how to integrate my old GOG.com setup_gametitle.exe files into the new client without re-downloading them all. That's the next thing to figure out. I think I need to trick the GOG Download client a little.
