Last time the site went down (for the end of beta) we gave our users a free game. While we're not going to claim that this will always happen, it's true that we have another one for you guys today. But before we go into that, let's tell you about the exciting new features that we've added to GOG.com:

As announced during our presentation on CD Projekt Days Spring Conference, the update adds two highly requested by users improvements: a new downloader application and personal messages. The new downloader has been made from scratch by GOG.com developers and features multithreaded downloads for performance, automatic error checking and runs only when user is downloading something from GOG.com. The downloader is not a client application and is optional to use, although recommended for downloading big games, like i.e. The Witcher 2.

Personal Messaging, the second biggest feature of the Spring Update, is a combination of instant and private messaging. The system will have fully configurable privacy settings and just like the downloader is completely optional. Aside of those two changes, the team has introduced many various improvements to make the user experience even better - those include improved checkout system, update to work flawlessly on newest browsers and easier to use coupon system.

Finally, as the cherry on top for the Spring Update Sundae (man, we could really go for some ice cream), the we released Dragonsphere, free to all users. The game is an adventure point-and-click title by famous MicroProse and features excellent story, clever puzzles and simple yet appealing graphics. “It’s easy to lose yourself in this fresh, engaging game” according to PC Gamer. This adds to our already existing catalog of free titles, bringing the total up to five.

Have fun with the new features and enjoy your new free game (in a little bit)!

FlyByU: Only 5 more days until Witcher2 can't wait to play...

StingingVelvet: More like 12.
I thought it was going to be released on May 10 or am I missing something?

That's TW1 - Enhanced Edition Director's Cut coming to Gog.....TW2 comes on the 17th. You can preload most of TW2's files on May10th as well, but that's about it.

SLP2000: Btw, could anyone give us some details about 'various improvements'? I'm curious what are they.

Chamb: Most notable one is the new checkout page (shows your wishlisted games and some recommendations + there're are now more ways to interact with you order + the page is streamlined and cleaned up a bit).

Other things are some improvements / optimizations / bugfixes on... various parts of the site... the specifics are boring trust me ;)
So it's safe to assume that quoting system is still broken? :P

That's not a bug, it's a feature! And if you sanitize it by hand it works quite well.
Thank you!
May the force be with you.
Thanks for taking good care of us GOG!!

TheEnigmaticT: Mouse over a user's name in the forum. Click PM.
I really, really greatly appreciate the new PM system, but was this restricted approach taken intentionally? With the 'external third party' GogPM one could simply enter a recipient's username if one wanted to and compile the message. Having to search for a forum posting by a specific user just in order to send a message seems somewhat overly troublesome (I was just referred to xyem as an example and fortunately tracking down one of his Weekly giveaways is easy, but that's certainly not the case for everybody). Actually, one can not even send a pm to a person who never posted on the forum (whom you might know through some other community)?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for a kinky friends list with automatically instant messaging using the new WebSockets technology (even though that'd be cool ;p), but this implementation of a message system seems a bit strange.
Hmm looks like GOG haven't had a chance to update their FAQ http://www.gog.com/en/support/website_help/downloads_and_games still refers to the old downloader and adobe air. Haven't tried it recently but will the old downloader continue to work or is it pretty much deactivated in preference for the new one. The old air based downloader runs on my linux box, I'm just thinking of that massive witcher 1 & 2 downloads I'm going to have soon.

I kinda hope not... The Adobe AIR app at least was cross-platform.. I liked being able to download the games using my Mac without wine/VM so I could play them later on.

EDIT:
looks like it indeed no-longer works :(
bah..

Quote from the FAQ:
1. Find the recepient of your message on the forums
2. While hovering above his or her post, a new orange PM button appears right beside the user's avatar and online status
I don't see any PM button when I follow these instructions. I don't even see the online status anymore. Also the new free game doesn't appear in my account. What's wrong?

Bad luck? Actually to get the new game you might have to snag it from the catalog.

Also, you might have to clear your browser's cache to see the PM button when hovering over people's posts.
GOG has (hopefully) almost returned to its former awesomeness \o/

(now let's see what we can do about support! :P )

You can still use the browser to download a GoG game, which should work just fine in most every case, shouldn't it?
