GOG.com's Agreement with Team 17 ‘Worms Up’ the Cold Days of January.

2012 will be filled with great new things coming to GOG.com, and first up, we’re expanding our catalog with some of the tremendous Team 17's classic titles.

Team 17's offerings on GOG.com start with the most lovable (and lethal) annelids of the gaming world in the unforgettable and quintessential tactical artillery shooter Worms United – a special edition of Worms 1 with the expansion Worms Reinforcements for $5.99. We’re not just giving you one game today, though. You will also want to use some heavy weaponry to fight a different kind of invertebrates--the squicky space alien kind--in Alien Breed and Alien Breed Tower Assault available now for just $5.99 as well.

Today's releases should keep you busy while we bring some more goodness from Team 17 in the next week: Superfrog and World Rally Fever: Born on the Road. We’ll be bringing you more games from their catalog later on this year.

Pick up Worms United and Alien Breed + Alien Breed: Tower Assault for just $5.99 each today on GOG.com!
Awesome stuff, but since when has Worms been turn-based strategy? Turn-based, yeah, but it's more a turn-based shoot-em-up.

Team 17 and Rockstar were once the same company, at least, many of the same people worked together. Psygnosis was the company. It made what is arguably some of the best games ever created: Shadow of the Beast, Lemmings, Armour-Geddon, Wipeout.

However in 2000, It was dissolved, and so now I don't know who owns the rights to Lemmings, but Team 17 released a (Rather Disappointing) version for the PSP, so I hope that we can see some of these games in the near future.
Hi again GOG, here's your $11.98. Happy now?
Well this is a pretty weak release.
Good work. Thanks so much. <3

Never knew DMA and Team 17 were connected in any way. But i remember Psygnosis only as a publisher, so maybe that's what i'm missing.
Worms was fun back in the day, haven't played the alien games.

Guess we will wait a little longer for X-Com and Lucasarts...

Yeah, most of the workers at DMA later worked at Rockstar, and some still do. They worked very close to Psygnosis, and many became friends and work together today. Much like 2K and Gearbox.
Wow, good news GOG!

Good work.

Team17 are not the nicest of game companies, they could have made Worms abandonware years ago.
All the more amazing that GOG managed to haul them in!

I hope i can play Worms2 pretty soon without the very annoying 'i need a CD to play'.

Oh, and for those asking for Lemmings: isn't that abandonware already?
That will be changed soon then i guess, IF it's in Team17's hands.

I figured Psygnosis made Lemmings, but maybe Team17 holds the rights now.

Knowing Team17, Lemmings will nog be abandonware much longer :)

-edit nevermind my Psygnosis spiel, i got it wrong i see

No buy this time but when you add Worms2 I'll be all over it. Heck, already cash in my money in advance!

Abandonware really means nothing. It is just a term that people apply to games that are no longer sold & supported, but from a legal standpoint downloading abandonware is still piracy.

True, I agree.

But it's still legal to download e.g. Lemmings from say abandonia.com, looks like the company does not care or else they would request to take it down.

Looks like a win-win situation :)

All hail to GOG though for teaming up with Team17, never thought they'd make it.

Also... You can't make a game abandonware, you simply abandon it. Which they did. However, making it Freeware, or putting it up for sale... even what Epic Games did would have been better until now... and I HATE the legal way to get classic Epic Magagames...

You go to a website, EpicClassics.com I think, PRINT and MAIL a form with a Check in to a small company, and then you get a CHEAP COPY OF A CD, Memorex prolly, and a SCAN of the Manual. A BLACK AND WHITE 60 DPI (MAYBE) SCAN. it sucks, but it was better than nothing. It's how I finally got Jazz Jackrabbit Legally... BUT still... Team 17 didnt even do THAT until now... lol...

[/rant]

Just saying :)

P.S. - I have no clue who owns the Legal rights to Lemmings, I just hope I can buy them from here soon lol.

Umm, I know Team17 did some dev work for a recent port, but to my knowledge they have no publishing or IP rights regarding the Lemmings series. Lemmings was originally published by Psygnosis (deved by DMA Design aka Rockstar North) which was purchased by Sony, so Sony owns Lemmings, i.e. you'll very likely never see Lemmings on GOG.

I wonder if we could say "Hey, can we Publish THESE SPECIFIC TITLES that were originally {Publisher name}" and get permission, after all, some of the games we have here were gotten that way right? Like... Apogee Software does not exist, at least not AS Apogee, but we have several Duke/Stone games that list them as the dev/pubs.
