Seems like most will be getting the Steamworks treatment, It also looks like Microsoft and Capcom don't have any plans at all but we'll have to wait and see. The surprising one though is Red Faction: Guerrilla Will strip GFWL. May replace with an existing service or develop its own? Thoughts http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=753227

Kinda old news but thanks for the list. Only game affected would have been batman AC and FO3 for me but there is already a mod that disables GFWL :) Also batman AC had already received a steam save correction

Red Faction Guerrilla having it stripped isn't that surprising. Nordic acquired the franchise somewhat recently, so it would be kind of dumb not to remove it, they would have wasted money on it otherwise.

Actually some of this is new news, it wasn't official that Dark Souls or Ace Combat would have GFWL stripped until today.

Yeah i didn't know if it was old or not glad to see Dark Souls getting GFWL removed fun game.
Ah, the world of DRM... Especially in the context of just replacing one DRM system with another, and then pretending everything is fine again for good.
heard that SSF4 AE is in fact not getting GFWL removed, despite being on that list, instead Capcom is going to let it go. Probably hoping it will force players to buy the Ultra upgrade DLC since they will be selling a DLC upgrade(for those with AE) and a stand alone version which will use Steamworks.

GFWL replaced by another DRM system is still good news.

Aren't some of the games DRM free now?
halo 2 please - the fans extended the servers date so hopefully they will listen again?
the Operation Flashpoint games would be helpful given they were in a recent bundle

Yeah I been thinking the same thing but honestly GFWL was a horrid piece of shit from day one that never got any better and the only people who felt differently were Gamerscore/achievement whores so even though Steam in concept is not that different just better done it's the lesser of the two evils. It's sort of like after being beaten horribly to the point where most of your bones are broken time and time again, the idea of simply getting kicked in the nuts ever so often isn't so bad.

Which is why so many of these people are fine with it, because there was and is far worse alternatives these companies can go with. Now this isn't taking into account all those types who are just crazy for all things Steam..

Technically replacing GFWL with Steam is introducing DRM. GFWL allowed offline profiles. The games discussed here had other forms of protection (usually Securom), but GFWL itself was not DRM.

There's 2 types of GFWL. Legacy GFWL usually has around 15 limited activations. I don't know if you can launch all legacy GFWL games with an offline profile without ever entering a CD key, but even if you can, you wouldn't be able to play online multiplayer or have online features.

2nd form of GFWL is SSA, which doesn't have an activation limit but binds the key to your Xbox live account.

GFWL is definitely DRM.. in some cases I would say worse than securom since you can't revoke activations.

That's obvious. You can't have online without any sort of DRM. Even a CD key that is included with some GOG games can be considered DRM.
But that gives me an idea to check whether RE5 LAN works with offline profile.
I wonder what they're going to do with Dark Souls. I hope they don't just turn it into an offline-only game, 'cause that would ruin a lot of the fun. I hope game saves will be safe, too, for all the games getting it removed.

I know some games require you to activate your key on GFWL before playing (meaning you can't just launch straight into an offline profile.. I'm just not sure if its SSL or legacy that requires you to do that. It's been mentioned several times in the past, though..

And there are plenty of games that don't have DRM for online MP.. unless you count online multiplayer itself as a DRM which is a bit silly.
