There’s nothing like a good old virtual pounding from time to time. That's why we are more than happy to welcome two exceptional fighting games, Mortal Kombat 4 and The friends of Ringo Ishikawa, on our DRM-free ring.

Mortal Kombat 4
It was the year 1997 and all game magazines were booming - Mortal Kombat goes 3D! The series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias already had cult status, but everybody was curious if it would survive such a revolution. Abandoning the traditional digitalized 2D graphics known from the previous Mortal Kombat games indeed seemed risky. Eventually, it took Tobias and Boon three years of hard work to create Mortal Kombat 4.

The final result was warmly welcomed by the fans, who liked the turn into the more dark, bloody direction of the Mortal Kombat franchise. For example, creators focused on the brutal Fatality endings to the fight, excluding humoresque elements like Friendship or Babality. Popular characters, like Johnny Cage, Raiden, and Goro, returned after some time of absence, while new fighters - Quan Chi, Shinnok or Tanya - quickly garnered many fans.

Just like its predecessors, Mortal Kombat 4 remains extremely fun to play even after many years since its release. Thanks to GOG.COM you can enjoy this game and its sheer dynamic playability once again.

The friends of Ringo Ishikawa
Remember that magic sound made by the coin inserted into the old arcade machine? Among many cult arcade games, side-scrolling fighting titles were very prominent. The friends of Ringo Ishikawa from yeo is such a game, yet combined with an open world and an engaging coming-of-age story. The main character of this title, a high school gang leader Ringo Ishikawa, has but one goal - to live through his last autumn before graduation.

With best friends by his side, he travels through the city and school grounds engaging in a brutal fight from time to time. As its creator describes it, The friends of Ringo Ishikawa is an existential open world beat ‘em up game with some school sim elements. It gives you quite a lot of freedom in exploring the town which undergoes the day-night cycle and has a lot of NPCs.

Apart from the game's story, elements like the hand-to-hand combat or mini-games (e.g. ping-pong and video-poker) will keep you immersed in The friends of Ringo Ishikawa for long!

As you can see, with two mentioned above releases we are not pulling any punches. It’s up to you to choose your favorite contestant or sidekick and pulverize all enemies standing in your way into smoking dust!

Elmofongo: A shame that its not Mortal Kombat 4 Gold which includes more content like more fighters and stages.
MK Gold was not well received. Sometimes less is more, so be happy with MK4 :-)
Hell yeah, both bought immediately. Double Dragon, River City Ransom, and Mortal Kombat were some of my favorite games in growing up. Ringo Ishikawa looks like a faithful tribute, but different enough to be it's own thing. And I was recently thinking of digging up my N64 to play MK4
I think it was Armageddon on Wii that allowed you to create a fighter with moves and fatalities, that was awesome. 9, 10, and 11 were already ported, so hopefully one day we get the full list.
So
MK5 was Deadly Alliance, MK6 was Deception and MK7 was Armageddon.

Which one was MK8? The " Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe" one?

Exactly

Loger13: So, in terms of the Good Old (tm) MKs, we only have to wait for Trilogy. And then only modern parts. I hope Komplete Edition doesn’t take as long as 4.

teceem: GOG sells (console) emulations too. It is possible (but probably unlikely(?)) that Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon, etc. come here one day.

I still have Deadly Alliance for XBOX. Does anyone have thoughts on how this one compares?
It's quite different actually, while Deadly Alliance embraced and truly changed the formula of previous MKs, MK4 is almost a translation of the 2D gameplay albeit side-stepping, but i love both games.
Eh, I must say that I'm not a big fan of MK4. Played it for the first time at least 15 years ago, I had impression of game unintentionally "goofy" looking with bombastic screams, theatrical animations etc. So it wasn't graphics only (although I wasn't especially satisfied how did game look in 3D comparing to previous games), but rather overall impression.

But ok, to give justice to this game, it generally plays correctly as representant of the genre on PC. If someone is not bothered by things I've mentioned, probably will have fun with this title.

Still waiting for MK Trilogy release, with its impressive amount of available fighters. I'm wondering if MK Trilogy is still not there due to licence issues, or "capricious" nature of windows release (can be a bit hard to launch on modern systems).

By the way - I guess that I'm one of the weirdest people interested in the series, because while I've enjoyed 2D games, I was never a big fan of its excessive violence, sometimes I wish I could turn it off to just enjoy the game (in many cases I think it's not something offensive, but rather embarrasing and grotesque).
i didn't expect for mk4 to be released on here but thats cool. thank you. maybe one day gog can release mk trilogy. thanks gog.
Good to see a new Warner Bros. game on here. It's been a while.

Now to see if we can get F3AR on here...

... and MK Trilogy, MK: Komplete Edition, Injustice, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Batman: Arkham series, Mad Max, more Lego games.
Newer parts of series are also welcome here.

Cifer84: WOOOOOOOOWWWW, I LOVE YOU, GOG!!!! This is beyond awesome, I can't believe it!!! Finally MK4 is on GOG (my first MK ever I played as a teenager, I have so much nostalgia for it).

The PC version of MK4 is actually the best version there is, even better than arcade (they added Goro, an intro, etc.). This game deserves much more attention, it features the fastest gameplay of the classic MK games and has so much unique stuff. Everybody should check it out!
I don't think it's anywhere close to being the best version. It looks significantly worse than the arcade version, has lower quality movies and less music on CD than PSX version, worse lightning than N64 version and obviously much less content than the Gold version released for Dreamcast.
It also had some weird hitbox issues, although I don't know how it looked on other platforms.

For a more technical analysis I would suggest Digital Foundry video.

Unfortunately, there is not a definitive version of MK4, which is best in every aspect.

You are right that the arcade version looks better, especially Prison stage and Living Forest stage. But without Goro, there is no boss on top of the tower, because Shinnok is so weak.

Regarding PSX: Better quality movies than PC, are you sure? PC was always more powerful than consoles. And less music, is there music in the PSX version which is not in the PC version? I played the PSX version long ago and as far as I remember, it's idental to PC with slightly weaker graphics.

The N64 version has horrible movies (like arcade), so better lightning or not, MK4 for N64 stinks. For PC, you can change the lightning in the option menu (F2, Graphics).

I played MK Gold. While I love a few things (like the Baraka ending), it's really a lazy update, they didn't put much effort into that.

Again, super-thankful for Mortal Kombat 4 being here.

Also hoping for other fighters from back in the day, like Last Bronx and War Gods. Please pretty please.
Wow, I almost forgot Mortal Kombat 4 existed. Great to see it back digitally.
